Nintendo Switch Presentation - January 12th

Since none of what 3rd-parties will show is likely to be exclusive to the Switch at launch, why do they need more than 2 months if we already know what we need to know about those games by the launch lead-up they're already engaged in for other platforms?

Unless you're expecting exclusive 3rd-party games from the current games industry. To which I say LOL.

Because releasing your game late means less sales. And it's even worse when you keep it a secret for so long.
I mean, do we really have to argue that 2 months between announcement and launch is a terribly tight timeframe for your game ?

They want people to actually have a hands on with it, to understand it themselves, which is why they're going to the lengths of having a space world like thing at their own timing. I guess they could Nintendo Direct it first and then open the doors, but seeing as they're having the media attend first, I guess they want to meet head on and confront them properly.

And of course, as they're having this hands on event, not only in Japan but in the USA, Europe and Australia as well, then they can't exactly wait until last minute, both because of media/peoples schedules and because they need to prepare with wherever they'll be hosting the events, so word will be out anyway.

They're just doing what makes sense for what they want to do. It doesn't make sense to just stick to old time rituals (just doing a last minute Nintendo Direct) just because that's what everyone's used to now. That's why Nintendo Direct was invented in the first place, to get the word more directly to everyone at the same time, instead of just doing the same old press conference over and over just because.

I don't think this is Nintendo doing anything that new, or killing off Nintendo Directs. It's just them doing what makes sense for what they have, whether that goes with tradition or not, which is exactly how Nintendo has always operated.

Ok, what are our hopes for those games?

I'm really hoping for Hearthstone and Overwatch, Shadow of Mordor could be cool, Saints Row: The Third, STARDEW VALLEY PLZ, World of Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts Collections and many many more I can't think of right now.

Strike out those first two cause they never stated partnership. Also The Third? IV has been out for like, 3 years now.

Is there any official broadcast time? I would like to know if I will be at home, or at work, when it happens.

I will take the afternoon free and recover the missed hours if necessary.

I mean I'd be down for an overwatch switch port if it had exclusive Nintendo costumes with it lol But it wouldn't really be that appealing on the switch considering the fact that's it's a online only game

Wow, they gave us a date so we don't spend the next 2 months endlessly guessing if this week or that week or 5 weeks might be the week we get an announcement of the announcement of an announcement. Thanks Nintendo.

We have a date. Ok.

2 months and a half wait. Then another 2 months + until I have it.

Will wait for the presentation hoping for a pro controller + game bundle so I can preorder.

I really like that Nintendo is approaching this much like Apple does. Their communication has been direct, they are holding the big news till close to the launch of the system allowing them to ride the hype into launch. The Trailer they put together was clear messaging for what makes the Switch unique. Excited to see what they have to say. My guess is they have 30 games at launch, price tag of $250 and they announce an update to the "wii shop" as well as partnerships with mobile developers to allow those titles onto the platform.

Nintendo of Europe also tweeted it and says January 13th. I guess it could be around/after midnight there?

Fuck it. This will be on midnight then. Probably about 3AM CET (January 13th), that's 6PM (January 12th) in the Pacific Coast.

Thank god it's Friday, and on Friday I work less hours. But I won't be able to sleep that night.

Ah yeah, here we go! I hope they have a nice stable of Nintendo games to present to us during the presentation, so they can start off guns blazing.
gimme Fire Emblem plz

Who says they'll all be late? Games release in March and April. And I don't recall Nintendo saying that 3rd-parties can't announce anything (hell, we had examples of that long before the name was announced), they just aren't likely to SHOW anything.

Just seems to me that you're imprinting your personal notions onto the situation.

Super hyped! Can't wait to know about the lineup and than have these games in my hands in only 2 months.

I hate the new trend to present games 2 years or more before they'll be released, is really frustrating and in all that time hype tends to decrease.

I really hope there will be the new Mario in launch window.

My guess for initial first party line-up:
- Zelda
- Mario
- Splatoon

good.
but I still think I'll be disappointed by the launch lineup.
Too many Wii U ports and third party ports will flood the first 6 months, imho, and very few "typical-nintendo-portable-games" will come (Fire emblem, MH, Animal Crossing, Pokemon...), that would actually reassure about the software merging strategy

It's far off but at least they've set a date.
Would have made sense to do this a few weeks or a month after the trailer to keep hype levels high, but what do I know...

Maybe they need more time to deliver a truly awesome presentation.

That's because looking for treasure for so long has made you weary, Capitan. Not able to smell the flowers and possibly give thought that maybe Nintendo will unveil more than 6 new pieces of software for a console that's been in development since 2014.

It's pretty clear as they don't want to reassure at all about that i think. To the contrary they want to brand it as a home console (which is obviously a terrible mistake!).

Yes it would have made more sense in terms of hype but not in terms of revenue. They still have wii u and 3DS (and games) to sell this holiday.

Maybe at first like in 2017 as the 3DS is still here with some games in dev but as soon as the switch is a success, I guess they will dump the 3DS and make the switch the successor of the wii u and the 3DS.

Not a terrible mistake in the western markets, which are more heavily skewed to home console gaming, the pretense of being a home console allows for marketing to compensate even if it IS ideologically a handheld with console power (which will mean in Asia it will be marketed with more of an emphasis on its handheld capability).

They probably been planning the event months in advance already, considering that after the live conference, it's a WORLDWIDE physical demo in retailers across most of the larger markets.

Is it, though?

It's a console that can play console games that you can take outside. It may not be as powerful as PS4 or XB1, but it's more usable. It's not tethered to your TV or monitor, but it can play those games.

I think they've been on point with most of their stuff for the past few months or so, namely since Zelda at E3. Their games have suffered, but it feels like they're starting to puff their chest out a bit.

I really like the Nintendo Switch logo, it's really cool and that's about it, I'll watch the presentation anyway to see how far Nintendo has fallen and watch the meltdown on Gaf... bring it on.

Wait so it's on the 13th in Europe? What day is that *checks* Ahh damn it's on Friday. Looks like I need to use an extra days holiday.
