With a live event like this, they kind of had to announce it early because people would find out about it anyway via press invites and venue bookings.
Ah of course. True say. Now we need some games to leak...

Since none of what 3rd-parties will show is likely to be exclusive to the Switch at launch, why do they need more than 2 months if we already know what we need to know about those games by the launch lead-up they're already engaged in for other platforms?
Unless you're expecting exclusive 3rd-party games from the current games industry. To which I say LOL.
It's Japan.
Open with the Squid Sisters.
Ok, what are our hopes for those games?
I'm really hoping for Hearthstone and Overwatch, Shadow of Mordor could be cool, Saints Row: The Third, STARDEW VALLEY PLZ, World of Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts Collections and many many more I can't think of right now.
"Activision" is a stated partner, I believe. No reason Blizzard games couldn't happen.Strike out those first two cause they never stated partnership. Also The Third? IV has been out for like, 3 years now.
I mean I'd be down for an overwatch switch port if it had exclusive Nintendo costumes with it lol But it wouldn't really be that appealing on the switch considering the fact that's it's a online only gameStrike out those first two cause they never stated partnership. Close to my birthday. Get me excited Nintendo.
Nintendo of Europe also tweeted it and says January 13th. I guess it could be around/after midnight there?
Because releasing your game late means less sales. And it's even worse when you keep it a secret for so long.
I mean, do we really have to argue that 2 months between announcement and launch is a terribly tight timeframe for your game ?
Wow, they gave us a date so we don't spend the next 2 months endlessly guessing if this week or that week or 5 weeks might be the week we get an announcement of the announcement of an announcement. Thanks Nintendo.

Are we there yet?
It's Friday the 13th.!
:O
good.
but I still think I'll be disappointed by the launch lineup.
Too many Wii U ports and third party ports will flood the first 6 months, imho, and very few "typical-nintendo-portable-games" will come (Fire emblem, MH, Animal Crossing, Pokemon...), that would actually reassure about the software merging strategy

It's far off but at least they've set a date.
Would have made sense to do this a few weeks or a month after the trailer to keep hype levels high, but what do I know...
Maybe they need more time to deliver a truly awesome presentation.
It's pretty clear as they don't want to reassure at all about that i think. To the contrary they want to brand it as a home console (which is obviously a terrible mistake!).

It will be. If the presentation is in the early morning in Japan it will be past midnight in Europe.Nintendo of Europe also tweeted it and says January 13th. I guess it could be around/after midnight there?

I really like the Nintendo Switch logo, it's really cool and that's about it, I'll watch the presentation anyway to see how far Nintendo has fallen and watch the meltdown on Gaf... bring it on.
