Nintendo Switch Presentation - January 12th

I really like the Nintendo Switch logo, it's really cool and that's about it, I'll watch the presentation anyway to see how far Nintendo has fallen and watch the meltdown on Gaf... bring it on.

If the launch video was anything to go by, your going to be pretty disappointed.

I mean thanks for joining us, I guess.

You have my support, it's must be terrible to be a Nintendo fan since the Wii, I'm still loving their handheld console and I'm really liking my 3DS but everything else is pretty shit, the Switch won't be the savior either, especially if the price is too high.

I'm expecting the Splatoon reveal to inform us quite a bit about Nintendo's online infrastructure and strategy for eSports on the Switch. It's going to figure into their presentation big time.

I knew it was going to be January so this is no problem, and you know what? I'm so freaking happy that they at least told us this time WHEN something will be happening. Bless

Sure, sure. I hear ya, or something.

Well aren't you a ray of sunshine

it's gonna be a rough wait

This! I never thought Nintendo would reveal the date so soon.
Finally no more speculation of speculation threads here.

Let's all play games till January and sit this out.

I hope we see the smash port.
Ive regretted selling smash4 for a while now but a definitive edition with all dlc would be great to showcase.

I bought smash 4 on 3ds and wiiU, and still play them both pretty regularly. To be able to play the same version no matter where I am? :D:D
Because I played online on 3ds today and it reminded me how cool it was that this was happening on a pretty low powered device, but the controls....
...not as good as wii u

I'm excited, but I am already fed up with the entire idea of launching a console early in a new year. It creates this weird situation where the company doesn't even want to bring up the product through the entire month of Nov and Dec due to holiday sales considerations. Then they rush to reveal everything right before the product hits shelves. I'm sure from Mid Jan through late March is going to be pure heaven in terms of reveals, but the wait is tough to endure.

It's just really too bad they couldn't have launched it this holiday.

Wait, people can actually play Switch from 14 to 15 at Tokyo Big Sight. Goddamn, I plan to visit Tokyo in February for Wonder Festival, now I am thinking if I should visit Japan in January instead.

I hear you, but apart from Final Fantasy XV, all of the 3rd party games I'm really interested in don't release until the end of January or February 2017 anyway (RE7, Persona 5, Yakuza 0, etc.), so if this event confirms they're coming to Switch too, then I don't mind waiting another few weeks so I have the option of playing these games on the go.

Mind, I'm not convinced they'll show 3rd party games of this caliber, but there's always a chance!

I can't remember the last time we got a concrete date for a media blowout from Nintendo...

Exciting as hell and they already announced the price and launch date for the 12th too!
The next two month will fly by either way, so it's nice to have this to look forward to in the beginning of January.

I hope we see more than ports...nothing says a half baked console like a launch of previous gen ports and one new game (thats also pretty much a port).

I agree. I hope they have some interesting new games for launch. I'd love a new Red Steel or something.

Goddamnit, a whole 2 months+ before we find anything more about it. At least we have a clear date rather than silence though.

No time given for the presentation yet?

This makes things a lot easier, I was so tired of the endless speculation prior the Switch unveil. Thanks Nintendo!

Nope. There are local events in US, Europe and Australia for the press.

For hands-on with the console sure, but I'm really betting that there will be more in-depth information beyond the live event for the press to report onsite, just like with Playstation Experience.

Besides, if there was a time for western press to bother going to Japan, it'd be for this. It only happens once.

Assuming Nintendo will invite the western media in Japan. Plus, I assume everything in Tokyo will be happening in Japanese (with translation for the worldwide stream).

Not a terrible mistake in the western markets, which are more heavily skewed to home console gaming, the pretense of being a home console allows for marketing to compensate even if it IS ideologically a handheld with console power (which will mean in Asia it will be marketed with more of an emphasis on its handheld capability).
.

I know we're all hyped for a new Nintendo consoles (and Nintendo games especially) but we're pretty quick to forget about the WiiU and the fact that there is currently not a real market for a Nintendo home console.

I know everyone will tell me WiiU had communication mistake and this and that and there is no long term problem that makes a Nintendo home console irrelevant on the market nowadays (compared to their portable).

Nintendo home consoles = bad vibes
Nintendo portables = good vibes

720p powerful portable that you can dock to a tv = Awesome value!
720p cheap home console that you can take on the go = bad value

They're turning the thing the way that will hurt them, i think. But who knows of course different product, different communication. But i really think there is a high risk there, of presenting the thing wrong.

An other example.
XBO and PS4 owners could be interested by a secondary portable with a different offer. But why would they buy a second less powerful home console.

As any hybrid the WiiU can be seen as two things. Nintendo should present it as the thing that as the most value. I know what they think. They think a home console as more value, and maybe games are more pricey then ?? Maybe some AAA devs pressure them to market it as such, or other wrong reasons. Except the mistake can be fatal.

Okay, the NA one is on the 12th, but the EU and JP ones are dated on the 13th. Assuming this is all simultaneous, what time considering the time-zones would this fall under most likely?

Man I'm so glad we finally have a date to look forward to, but it's going to burn a hole through my calendar.

I'm curious how they'll do the presentation. I wonder if Kimishima will do the presenting himself...?

I will miss Iwata :(

But on the flip-side I miss the week daily entertainment of watching GAF freak out as they count down to each hour between 1300-1500 BST.

You would think that since the NX preview event was announced out of this schedule they would have learned.

So that's realistically the point onwards from which their marketing engine kicks in until release. Is this a normal time period for this? They must be pretty confident that they can market it effectively in that 2 month period.

Alright so, two things. One, you're completely assuming the device will remain 720p docked despite numerous (normally correct) insider sources confirming that a docked Switch is able to output at 1080p. It's still a rumor, but so would your assumptions.

Second. Games. You're asking why people would buy consoles with lower specs? Games. It's all about games. Now you can have your own speculative opinion and say you're not confident the games that the Switch will have at launch wouldn't be compelling enough. That's fine. But positioning the Switch as a home console first is what allows them the perception, the TRUE perception, of having that sort of experience with the benefit of mobility. Sure, the more hardcore groups that are all about the specs will bemoan the fact that it's not a standalone home console, but this is how it works, and the message is already incredibly clear and positively received by a more general market. The only way they can continue carrying that momentum is games, not specs.

And why wouldn't Nintendo have the secondary market cornered. Along with most of Xbox One's output also on the PC and both consoles sharing a majority of multiplat games, what would position them as a good secondary console, what would Sony if you don't like their first party output? At least with the Switch's potential third party, you have the additional benefit of seamless mobility.
