Nintendo Switch Presentation - January 12th

They can't duplicate the sidequests in quantity with a strong story, but they can in quality. Xenoblade's quests have a lot of problems and might be the game's weakest point - too hard to find people, the good ones are gated behind the generic ones, slower movement, only one quest with VA, etc. In addition to the content of the quests, X has so many quality-of-life improvements with questing. Now if they can just make collectibles less annoying...

I agree, besides editing issues in the cutscenes and NLA day getting annoying, the cheese fits the game. It might be neat if a different composer for every game became a hallmark of Nintendo's Xeno games.

David Wise in a JRPG. Get it done.

I agree that there are some quality-of-life things in X that should be retained or built upon. Though considering the voice acting jobs of the NPCs in X i'd rather quests be text based lol. Some of those performances were dire.

Takahashi stated that the "Xenoblade" title is more or less of a title Monolithsoft uses to indicate the game is headed by himself.

So I dunno. Even if the gameplay is drastically different, they'll probably stick by the "Xenoblade" title regardless.

He says "Xeno" is the name that identifies his work, which would include games like Xenosaga and Xenogears.

We can be fairly certain the next game will be XenoSomething.

I haven't been following the various Switch threads, so apologies if this has already been asked, but going by Nintendo's past and/or Amazon's past, will the Switch probably not be up for pre-order on Amazon until a specific release date and price are announced? It would be really nice to not have to check the page multiple times a day until January 12 if that's the case.

Pretty sure.

I asked this in the HDD thread but it was largely ignored:

Based on Nintendo's past several investor briefings/meetings we know they are very interested in increasing digital sales and digital sale revenue, so limiting the onboard storage to the rumored 160GB doesn't make much sense to me. I think Nintendo might be preparing a storage solution to make up for the lack of HDD connection.

The reasoning that we got for the lack of HDD connectivity to the dock is that they don't want people to think the Switch has to be connected to the dock at all times to play games- they want that ease of removing it and playing it on the tablet. This has me thinking, if a wired HDD doesn't work, then they should (and maybe will) offer a streaming storage device. That way the storage device can constantly be syncing data with the Switch handheld when in range, and it would be fairly easy to manage data when in range. Obviously you wouldn't be able to play any games off of the streaming storage device, but you'd still have access to the internal storage of the Switch plus any micro SD card.

So does this idea make sense? Is it even possible? The reason I'm thinking about this over cloud storage is that cloud storage requires downloading/uploading data to the internet, which is bad for people with data caps, whereas streaming directly to a storage box would be a local function, not an internet function.

It also jives with Kimishima's statement about offering a wide variety of "add-on hardware"

Not really tech savvy and I've never owned anything close to a hybrid game console before but I've been wondering about the battery.

Will the Switch's battery be drained quicker and killed if I decide to never really take it off the dock? I'm sure just like Wii U that the dock will quit charging once battery is full. I just can't wrap my head around using this as a full-fledged home console without having to worry about the possibility of replacing the main "console tablet" sooner than I would replace a normal home game system.

I like this idea! As I haven't seen anyone reply to you yet, I figured I would take a swing at answering. Here we go:

By my knowledge, wireless storage solutions allow you to sync data to and from a device of your choice. While you can sometimes "stream" information from a wireless drive, being able to do so with game data would be very unlikely.

With streaming out of the way, the next possible use for a wireless drive would be for sending game data back and forth. This would be extremely similar to transferring data between an external drive plugged into the dock, with the advantage being the wireless connection being able to persist while the Switch is docked or undocked. While I initially wanted to rule this out due to the need to stay within the wireless range, I've come around. Mainly because you would need to do the same thing when downloading a game directly from the eShop. So a wireless drive that works just in this capacity could be a possibility.

The last case I can think of that might make or break this wireless drive idea is downloading new content. On the Wii-U, you can designate that downloaded content go directly to the external hard drive. With a wireless drive, I'm not 100% sure if the Switch could download data directly to the drive without temporarily storing it on the console first. If you're out of space on the console, that would make downloading additional games impossible in this scenario.

So... We could definitely use a bit more information on the last bit there, but I'd say that it isn't "entirely" impossible! Anyone else care to chime in?

Omg. Okay, I'll explain this as calmly and clearly as possible...

So...Soraya Saga has a history of retweeting Nintendo Directs before the event happens. Turns out that every time she retweets the announcement (whether it's a day or the week before), news of Monolith Soft's game occurs at the event.

I have gathered info that she retweeted the following events, all of which Xenoblade Chronicles X made an appearance:

-Wii U Direct on January 23, 2013
-Nintendo Direct @ E3 2013
-E3 Digital Event 2014
-Nintendo Direct (November 5, 2015)

Based on Soraya Saga's history and looking at her latest retweets (NCL, NoA, & NoE) of the Switch Presentation, there's a possibility that Monolith Soft will be presenting their next project at the event!
Dont do this to me

I have a feeling that Nintendo wants to achieve as much 3DS sales as possible for Sun/Moon before announcing that it will be available on the Switch.

The character designer is independent I think anyway. :P Same one who also did Xenosaga 1 IIRC. Anyway, Xenoblade 1's character designs are so good IMO, please get that one back, that one also did Soma Bringer IIRC also.

You liked the terrible character design in Soma Bringer? Barf. They were done by the person who does most of the Xeno designs behind the scenes though. Tadahiro Usuda is awful at character design really, that's why they brought Kunihiko Tanaka back as the lead.

Pretty sure there was no specific credit given for the first Xenoblade though. Akinobu Yamakawa is oddly listed first in the credits so maybe he did those designs on the website for promotion, but the art book is full of Usuda's usual crappy character designs. I will say that he can design nice mech stuff if those are his too though.

Probably will be the 3rd version rather than a port of the two

Taking cues from Rockstar. It's a smart strategy.

I remember when we all thought Nintendo would put Pokemon Grey on the 3DS. Instead we got Black 2/White 2 on regular DS a year later. Lol

I think it be a good idea to port it too down the line, but there is precedence for this.

That would be 5, and Im up for more Sawano.

And...6.

I want these things:
-Elma
-Playable Nopon with his/her own specialized Skell
-Stronger narrative focus
-More cinematic scenes on the same level as the original at least. This was singlehandedly the most disappointing thing in XCX for me.
-Continue making amazing sidequests
-Answers for all the questions raised in XCX
-Less controversial soundtrack I LOVED XCX's OST for the record. But I don't know if I can take anymore of the complaints
-Wrap up the story with a satisfying conclusion.

I think they will wait until fall for a upgraded switch release.

I think within the first year of the Switch we will have:

Mainline Zelda
Mainline Mario
Mario Kart and Smash Bros. ports
Mario Maker and Splatoon ports
Mainline Pokemon

Nintendo is not fucking around. If that is indeed the scenario for the first year, I don't see how the Switch fails.

I think that's a safe scenario and I agree with your optimistic outlook based upon it.

I think the difference there is 3DS owners could still play BW and B2W2. Switch owners can't play SunMoon or any 3DS followups, so it makes some sense to have versions available for them.

First-Party Mini-Game Franchise

Fixed.

Sun and Moon port would be disappointing.

Would love a spinoff to tide us over, then finally the open world Pokémon console adventure spoken of in ancient legends.

It's definitely an interesting idea. The whole digital push and 32GB rumor don't mesh at all so I feel like Nintendo has to have something up their sleeve to solve this problem. There's no way they could combine something like that with a Playstation Now sort of thing, could they?

Dude, a Metroid Prime Trilogy portable would be great!

Ahh, a politic from my country:

So they're inviting Japanese press for the Live Event, right? So it would make more sense to do it in Japanese. But if it's being streamed worldwide, then maybe it's gonna be in English?

I don't really want them to do the TGS thing of having someone over the Japanese TRYING to translate to English during the conference.

An issue with a Sun and Moon port would be that the game could look nice in HD, but as is it's not really a game that can stand next to:
or
Might muddy the waters if they just port the 3DS game and make fans think "this is it?"
Wii U games work since those are still HD and look pretty nice.
That being said, I think the character models (outside of textures) look pretty nice.
Would GameFreak be willing to make a new overworld and arenas with the high quality character models from battles?
That might solve the issue while not increasing the workload dramatically.
Improvements like no transitions from overworld to battles would be nice. Would allow them to get more out of the new world.
Having a behind the camera view with more OoT Zelda like traversal could get people interested instead of just the top down view.

The Switch will not have the 40-50gb games people keep talking about, 160gb are good enough for Nintendo games

I'm think it'll have huge games...especially if 3rd parties are going to be involved with this. Now, I don't believe it's going to be all that often, but I think there will be some huge games on the system. That doesn't mean they can't find a way around this. I'm starting to think that Nintendo will relent and allow HDD storage at some point.

I don't know if there has been much conversation about this, but I'm curious about the wording here from the press statement:

"The presentation will include the launch date and pricing for Nintendo Switch, as well as a look at the lineup of games currently in development.

They don't specifically say: we'll give you a peak at the "launch titles", or "launch window titles", or "2017 titles".

How much of their software plan are they prepared to show? The probably will not be going in depth with every title, but are they going to give us a fairly detailed road map of the first 12-18 months of Switch releases?
