Nintendo Switch Presentation - January 12th

I'll be very surprised and disappointed if that's the case.

I mean, Tropical Freeze came out back in early 2014 and was essentially finished back in late 2013. Retro said that at that point they were already beginning to work on their next game.

By this time this event happens, it will be nearly three years since Retro started working on their new project. How could they possibly have nothing to show? Not even a teaser?

EDIT: Reread your a post little more clearly...you could be right, maybe they wanted to have something new and big for E3. Still hoping it gets revealed in January however.

I think Nintendo can look at it as let's not show everything we have in January, especially since E3 is only a few months after the Switch launches and Retros game may not release until 2018. Also, like I said Retro is the big American company so they may think "let's save their game for the big American convention".

If anything, at the least, I can see them showing a teaser trailer and doing the full reveal for the game at E3. I don't think we'll get a full reveal of Retros game in January though.

It may be missing, but i don't see the correlation between that and them possibly showing Monolith's new game.
I was mixing different thoughts there. I don't think MS's game would mean Retros game wouldn't be there.

Interesting. I think Metroid more is likely in this case as as we've just had a DK game and fans have been clamoring for a Metroid game for years. Nintendo must have seen the disappointed reaction to DK over Metroid when they revealed it.

Yeah but if they go by sales, then the latest DK massively outsold the latest Metroid

If he's telling the truth, then it's probably Metroid Prime 4 or a 3D DK game.

I think Retro and Nintendo are smart enough to see the reception when TF was revealed. People were fuming and pissed off. I don't think they want to start off with a game that will piss people off on the Switch of just a 2D Platformer in general.

Retro did 2D DKCR, then some 2.5D elements in TF and now a 3D DK feels like a natural evolution.

Either give everyone Metroid Prime 4 or go all out and give us an open world 3D DK game. People would be insane happy with Metroid Prime 4 and very happy with a 3D DK game, imo.

Weren't DKTF sales on the low side though (not sure if this is true, thought I remembered reading articles on that).

It's cheaper to make DK over Metroid though. Metroid isn't making as much money as a DK game.

I feel like if they had to choose they'd pick DK, but do a 3D DK game because people will be happy with that. It shows more development and money was put into it unlike "just another 2D platformer", which would piss people off.

lol
"Happy"
People will still bitch about it only because it's DK. They won't give a fuck if it's a high budget 2D, 3D or 4D game.

I don't think it will be that bad.

Are people seriously more pissed at it being DK or it being another 2D platformer?

I know people want Retro to do Metroid, Star Tropics and 10 million other franchises, but come on we rarely get 3D platformers. I would go bananas for a 3D DK game done right.

Really hope it's Donkey Kong again.
Actually I don't care, but I will never play a metroid game so, I'd prefer DK.

I'm not interested in a 3D DK game if it plays anything like DK64.

I want to see Retro tackle a brand new IP.

Yeah, that's why I said a 3D DK game done right because I trust Retro to do it way better than Rare. I just played DK64 not too long ago and it was fun at first, but my god the collectables with each character was ludicrous.

Anyways, this whole DK vs Metroid thing branched from that Chris guy saying Emily doesn't know anything implying Retro was working on DK or Metroid. I was just responding to which was more likely of the two.

Just look at the reactions in this thread :P
I can already see the thread tittle: "Retro working on yet another fucking Donkey Kong game (now in 3D)"

I know GAF isn't good at all to meassure the general opinion but it seems people are either a) tired of DK IP or b)platformers in general other than Mario.

I strongly disagree with that.

You cannot predict this company.

You can't.

Yeah, that's how I feel.

For the Donkey Kong or Metroid debate, I can see it going either way. I could see Retro feeling obligated to make one more DKC title, just to wrap things up and leave their mark on the franchise with a full trilogy to mirror Rare's games. On the flip side I could see it being Metroid Prime 4, as a way for Nintendo to gain some goodwill back from Metroid fans and general core players.

Weren't DKTF sales on the low side though (not sure if this is true, thought I remembered reading articles on that).

Compared to Returns, which sold five or six million copies on Wii alone. TF is over a million though, with 1/10th the install base of the Wii. If you look at it that way, it didn't do too bad. Perhaps not as much as Nintendo hoped though.

I'd say it's really hard to predict how much a PROPER Metroid game might sell these days. I really do think it could do a couple million if it was a great game and marketed right.

Practically every Metroid game actually has sold over a million...with a few outliers, those being:

Zero Mission
Other M
Federation Force

(i'm not counting pinball because who cares)

OM and FF are understandable but it's a shame ZM didn't do very well.

I really just want Retro to get a shot at an original IP. They've more than earned it at this point. Nintendo could definitely be making better use of their western studios.

I dont recall mario 3d world selling very well(?) why would dk 3d? Hopefully doing something more worth their time.

3D World sold over 5 million

Yes, it looks like I was wrong. :(

I won't bring up fucking Donkey Kong again lol.

There was that whole thing with the Tanabe fallout though. It's possible that the project was scrapped or reset after that.

Or, If Retro are really indeed making a new IP, they may just need more time. They really are only "70+" employees according to Nintendo's official numbers earlier in the year, which is tiny these days to build a large scale game.

Who knows. Maybe we'll see it in January, and maybe we won't. I would only be worried if E3 comes and goes and we don't see it.

There was never any Tanabe fallout

I seriously doubt Retro's next game is another DKC, though they do may a third eventually. 2D platformers seem to sell well for Nintendo nowadays on established systems, but aren't really killer apps for building install bases. Similar thing happened with NSMBWii to NSMBU.

I'm going to take a guess at Metroid. Tanabe's words on a new Metroid Prime were overinterpreted during the Federation Force firestorm as ruling it out, but don't have to be read that way.

With Retro now having experience with developing HD games, and having even more powerful hardware to work with, I imagine a Metroid games would look gorgeous. Has any Retro devs said anything about the possibility of a Metroid game?

Nothing new really, but thought it could be worthy a mention.

Has any Retro devs said anything about the possibility of a Metroid game?

We don't know anything. Chris FOM's source at Retro claims that "they don't talk about what they're working on, ever".

Even if they don't fully reveal their new game at the presentation in January, I do hope that we at least get a teaser.

At the same time Nintendo is going around greenlighting gigantic open world JRPGs with Monolithsoft (the first of which they didn't even have enough confidence to launch worldwide). So I dunno what their process is for selecting projects.

I think they'll move away from DK just because they revealed a DK year 1 with Wii U and will want to differentiate from what they did previously. New IP or a diifferent IP makes a lot of sense, even if insiders are vaguely throwing the wet blanket on it.

Really now, why is more DK a bad thing? I, for one, would welcome a new Donkey Kong Country game.

If the game is anything like DK64 though, then I'd rage.

Retro's new game will be metroid. When they trolled us with that grandpa kong reveal with the Dorito Pope, Regginator had a Metroid pin on his jacket.

I believe anyway. No way will it be DK, at least not for their next game.

I want someone else to be handed the Metroid reins (preferably a Japanese studio) and I want Retro to try something new out.

We better get more Metroid one way or another, though. That series is far too good to let go to waste.
