Nintendo Switch Presentation - January 12th

Really now, why is more DK a bad thing? I, for one, would welcome a new Donkey Kong Country game.

If the game is anything like DK64 though, then I'd rage.

I just wanna see them working on something in 3D, if only for the spectacle.

I want more DK so bad

I want someone else to be handed the Metroid reins (preferably a Japanese studio) and I want Retro to try something new out.

We better get more Metroid one way or another, though. That series is far too good to let go to waste.

I'd love the guys behind Splatoon to have a go.

Samus & Morphball = Kid & Squid.

No reason that the Splatoon controls couldn't be transposed wholesale to a 3rd person Metroid.

I absolutely hated Donkey Kong 64 but that's because it was a work from the infamous Rareware, who never did anything decent outside of the first Banjo. I believe Retro Studios is capable of delivering a nice 3D plateformer.

A new Metroid Prime game would make sense to me considering they just released a spin-off this year that contained a number of nods towards another storyline in the Metroid universe. Personally, I think their plan was to use Metroid Prime: Federation Force to build hype towards a new main game in the series.

That's true. They're getting Metroid on people's mind.

Pretty sure Tanabe said those were his intentions with Federation Force; to expand the Metroid Universe.

Who knew he would miserably fail in the process?

..oh wait

I fucking loved that game.
What did you hate about it if I may ask?

Whatever it is it should be a 3D action adventure of some sort. Not because I don't like the DK's - in fact I think they're among the greatest 2d platformers of all time - but because Retro in the Gamecube era stood for the absolute greatest in lush and atmospheric visuals, for 3D game worlds with the most fantastic attention to detail, and for graphics that have truly stood the time like no others of the era, partly because of the way they built in surface 'textures' not by textures but 3d geometry carvings.

I think the reason Metroid underachieved on the Wii was because when HD visuals started becoming the norm MP3 lost some of that sheen that is crucial to the series. In HD it could be _the_ first person killer app Nintendo is lacking.

Here's a GREAT idea and a great way to show you mean business with the Switch. I don't think Retro is doing Metroid at all.

What Nintendo should do (and I hope they're doing this) is have a Western third party developer make a new Metroid game. Some big third party dev who would do Metroid right. Give it all great of online too.

Also, have one of the indie guys who love Super Metroid make a brand new 2D Metroid game.

If I was Nintendo this is what I would do. Let western third party devs make the Metroid games. Show you trust them with the IP and show the world you're building relationships not only with Japanese third party devs, but western devs too.

What did you hate about it if I may ask?

Almost everything to be honest.
The gameplay was imprecise, especially if you played it after Mario 64. It was a collect-a-thon hell like I've never seen before, and so extremely frustating if you want to 100% it like you would normally do in a 3D Mario.

The universe Rare created in the game was awful too. All these characters were embarassing and some made me feel uncomfortable (I mean why the fuck would you want to see female monkeys with bra and sexy attitude).

Would only care for another DK game right now if it was something totally different. 1st/3rd person platforming adventure, whatever. Another 2D DKC game would be very disappointing.

I'm a big Nintendo fan, so I'm not hating. It just find the announcement of the announcement thing kinda funny.

Would we have 2 months of material to discuss?

Well, it's an announcement of a press conference + a two day hands-on event. It's not like we're discussing a Nintendo Direct.

I mean, don't get me wrong, Nintendo fans could easily spend two months talking abut a Nintendo Direct.

Unless Nintendo is hunting down all the sources right now I think we can expect some smaller leaks here and there between now and the Switch event. It's also fun.

I wanted to add one more thing to the western 3rd party part. Remember Nintendo asked some European devs to make a new F-Zero game?

It shows Nintendo did try to get a western third party dev to make a game for one of their IP's. Sucks the dev couldn't do it. I hope Nintendo would try again with someone in the west to make F-Zero.

Speaking of Directs, I somehow have a feeling there will be one more this year. Sure, they do not have much to speak about, but I have a feeling that they want to show release dates, or time frames, to the few upcoming 3DS games before turning to Switch in January.

Next week, or week after that are my guesses, if they were to host one. Just before the release of Mini NES, to promote it one last time before release.

Next week is the Animal Crossing direct.

Edit: Dang, forgot the Animal Crossing Direct completely. Please ingnore me...

Well, there is a Japanese Animal Crossing Direct next week, so I guess you're right!

I genuinely wonder what's up that Nintendo decided to announce this event 2 months before it happens?? That's very Un-Nintendo. But I'm grateful they did because I was fearing they will go radio silence again till who knows when.

This thread is gonna be active for over two months?!

LMAO.

What's so funny?

This is true, but I don't think there's anything that screams spectacle more than Metroid Prime in this case. Think about it, in may not seem like it at first but the particles, the environment, hell even the visor, everything gives a sense of atmosphere and makes it grander than it actually is.

I now welcome a new Metroid Prime game more than a Donkey Kong Country game :P

The venue they are holding it in is huge, so probably good to let ppl know far ahead. Also pretty hard holding it a secret after booking such a big venue.

This would really be the best outcome.

You mean the worst.

Only Nintendo studios can give Metroid justice. Sadly it won't happen, but the best thing would be a Metroid by Aonuma and the Zelda team or Koizumi.

Keep in mind that people actually liking Knack here on GAF has always been an inside joke. Surely they were all joking in that thread, right?

Right?

You actually know the answer.

... Right?

Did it beat knack in the end?

I still remember with horror the knack has outsold Mario 3d world threads and all the people rejoicing. This changed forever the way I see GAF

I think a 3D DK by Playtonic and Retro would be amazing. I mean if Playtonic could do it on their own, wonderful, but with only like 20 folks there, I'm not sure if they could do it. Then again, would folks want a 3D DK with Yooka-Laylee's scope/scale and whatnot?

Not at all, I know that's an unpopular opinion but I played a lot of Rareware games and never liked them, with the sole exception of Banjo Kazooie.
You can dislike their games, and opinions are opinions, but this: "the infamous Rareware, who never did anything decent outside of the first Banjo" is probably the worst thing I ever read on Neogaf, and I have read a lot of things, sorry.

I was trolling a bit, to be honest :P

To be fair he is only 15.
As far as i can tell it's because they showed wii u games like splatoon, zelda and mario kart 8..... he presumes they fixed the wii u so you can actually use it away from the house but need a new controller.
Did you.....did you correct him?
