So uh, Titanfall 2 Campaign is amazing

I thought this deserved a thread of its own because people are surprised at how good this is.

Titanfall 2 is mostly known for its multiplayer and usually, for these sort of games, a Campaign is just tacked on or not important. I say that even without the multiplayer, this sits there with DOOM and Wolfenstein as shooters you should buy for its SP alone (imo I think it shits on those two).

Some impressions from the |OT|:

I understand the Half Life 2 comparisons now.

Whatever is the most congratulatory word ever spoken by man, Respawn deserves to hear it.
my larger post here

Respawn is definitely not joking when some of them say they feel the game is better than CoD4.

I haven't played Doom yet, but the main contenders for best modern shooter campaign is generally Wolfenstein, Doom, and now Titanfall. The weird thing is, I enjoyed Wolfenstein but never really felt it was a really -great- campaign. It was good enough, fun, and very lengthy. There's a lot of meat to it, and I guess that surprised people, because no one really makes a big long single player only FPS anymore. But the game had so much fat, and I felt a lot of it went on for longer than it needed to. Stages are large but not always interesting. There is a lot of combat but a lot of it also feels samey. Uncharted games also have this problem, where it's not the game design that's really driving what makes people love the games so much as the story and characters and just there being so much of it.

Titanfall is a totally different beast. It's the sort of campaign that is game first and story second, but every step of the way is designed to be a -single player- game. The sort of game experience you have alone, rather than with friends. But totally a game - and a great game. It's like a modern Contra or Metal Warrior, except with more variety and really great production values. It's short but never overstays its welcome, and the stages are unique enough that you can imagine yourself going back to replay them just to get that slice of gameplay again.

I have no qualms with saying that the Titanfall campaign is representative of what I feel more shooter campaigns should strife to be. Not story vehicles with the expected gameplay, but vehicles for gameplay we don't get in multiplayer with interesting story flavoring. Titanfall 2 is to first person shooters what great Platinum Games titles are to character action games.

This campaign. This motherfucking campaign. I though you were hyping it for no reason, but holy shit DOES it live to the hype and beyond. THAT particular part of the game had me smiling non-stop. Some genuine, genius shit.

and many, many many many more

Part of me wonders how this would be received by now if it was the very first Titanfall game and didn't have a multiplayer.

Respawn put in a lot of work into this Campaign and it really shows. Multiplayer be damned, don't sleep on this if SP if your thing.

Like I said in my review, it's the Super Mario Galaxy 2 of shooters. Nonstop inventiveness wrapped in unbelievable locomotion.

I keep hearing that. Sadly, I won't be able to pick it (and Xenoverse 2) up until Friday with Target's buy2get1free deal but man, that's all I hear about the game. Everything relating to it is about how amazing it's campaign is. Can't wait to try it out.

Well-deserved too because it seems they've completely upped everything from TF1 from modes to gameplay. I hope it sells well.

I've been seeing good impression as well and seeing some clips make it look pretty amazing. Will probably pick it up in the future.

I've been hearing this a lot. I generally tend to ignore shooters since they're so multiplayer focused, so it's refreshing to hear about a campaign being this good.

I would guess I'm only about 30% of the way through but I'm really impressed so far. I wanna play more of it but the mp has me hooked pretty hard already.

If anyone is on the fence because of the tech test... just jump in. I was dissapointed then as well but the final game is excellent.

goddamn.

I keep hearing it's really short though - regardless, I will definitely dive in, but I think I'll hold for a sale as I have no interest in MP. Very stoked though.

I'm dying to try it, but since I'll only be playing the singleplayer portion of the game (I have no interest in MP), I'll have to wait a bit until it's a bit more affordable.

I think one thing I really enjoy is the fact that it feels like a platforming game in several segments. Just bouncing from wall to wall and moving through some rather crazy levels.

I had a sneaking feeling that this Campaign was gonna turn out to be amazing especially my hunch on platforming. Feelings of Validation feel gooood.

Boy I really regret cancelling my $50 pre-order. I blame that damn technical test for souring me.

God fucking damnit, you guys aren't making it any easier passing on this game.
I just can't, Modern Warfare has priority, then Battlefield 1 when I'll get it, then this in early 2017.

Congratulations to Respawn, though.

Its as if Half-Life 2 was crossed with Platinum Games.

Like that's not even some bullshit hyperbole thing, it is legitimately THAT game. Best single player FPS of the year.

I loved every second, was surprised at how good it was. Expecially when some reviewed painted it as a lower budget version of cod and battlefield camping wise.

The fact is, mechanically there are some amazing parts and I don't want to spoil anything but you get half life 2/portal vibes in places. Even occasionally star fox vibes when other pilots of titans are shit talking you. It's awesome.

I had a lot of fun with Titanfall, so hearing that impressions of 2 is great sounds good. Hopefully this is a game I can try during the holidays.

Friendship ended with DOOM?

Now Titanfall 2 is my best friend

Rented tf2 from Redbox to just play the campaign. Was blown away by it and ended up getting a copy because respawn deserves the sale

Totally agree. It's the 'Mario Galaxy' of FPS games. Each level is created around an idea, the player learns and perfects the idea, then the game throws it away and something else gets put in place.

There are so many "oh holy shit" moments in that game, it's really impressive. Plus the on foot levels where you're just double jumping, sliding and hopping off walls and shooting people in mid air is amazing. In an odd way, I wish there was a replay mode so I could see all the crazy shit I did.

One of the most enjoyable FPS campaigns of the year. It's between this and DOOM, and I think I may have to hand it to Titanfall.

So many creative, amazing moments that I can point to. And none of it ever got stale.

Single player is fantastic, best campaign I have played in years. People need to pick it up over cod and battlefield no matter of there console of choice.

You know that Modern Warfare you're hyped for? The guys that made that are like "yo, we have done an even better job this time!"

Dammit, I cancelled my pre-order because I didn't have enough time for two multiplayer shooter games. Bah, I really hope their sales pick up during the holidays because they deserve it if the campaign really is that great.

Heard so much amazing praise with people likening it to Half-Life, Vanquish, Portal and even a Mario game. It's insanely fun and well put together. One of the best FPS campaigns I can remember.

Campaign is pretty awesome...it really highlights how quick and snappy the movement is in this game and really is a great prep for the mp

I think the mp is also pretty top notch...but its let down by some shitty maps

I beat it yesterday, loved all of it.

DOOM was my previous favorite FPS of the year, but this has eclipsed it EASILY. Couldn't believe how damn good the campaign was.

Everyone should play it.

Campaign is great but the typical AAA tropes (weapon limit, uninteresting AI and enemies, bad writing), make it stand below Doom for me. Doom let you carry a myriad of weapons, I also thought the secrets were more interesting.

But for a multiplayer focused franchise as Titanfall, this campaign is surprising. Its as good as MW1 was at launch.

It sounds like SP was kind of overlooked, but that may just be because it's a MP oriented game first.

The praise seems really, really extraordinary.

I think it evokes the feeling of Half Life 2 / Portal because the level design is just so fluid. At no point do you feel like this was a world built for you. You are traversing a weird environment with your unique abilities, and it feels absolutely amazing. The mechanics, level design, and art blend together in a way that's not really possible in games without these traversal options.

Also I had almost written off boss battles in AAA FPS games as something better left undone than some of the shitty bosses we've gotten. However TItanfall has some really fun boss battles or boss like scenarios and that alone was something I didn't expect at all and found myself really enjoying. If they wanted to do single player DLC expansion packs I would be there day 1.

Yeah the campaign is fantastic. Not sure where some of the pre-release negativity was coming from.

Some of the setpieces and temporary gameplay additions are very fun and memorable.

Arthur Gies was super underwhelmed and I usually align with his tastes in shooter campaigns. Hmmm. Still tempted, but I already have BF1 and barely enough time for that.

These posts surprises me a lot. Is angry joe reviewing this game? I'd like to see how long he takes with single player given he was 5 hours for BF1.

I'm not jumping on any shooter yet. I want to see what has legs before I get invested. I want Titanfall 2 to do well!!

That's great to hear. Not much of a multiplayer guy so it's definitely on my list to check out.

I saw some tiny snippets which I thought were really intriguing but was listening to some pro-ish Xbox podcasts saying campaign is meh. Maybe they're a little anti the game now
