Switch 2 Pro Controller Felt Amazing… Until It Didn’t

The guy with the Youtube vid, I know he seems like a baby spreading FOMO with his hand in the cast/guard thing, but when I actually watched the video the other day, the case he made for why it happened made sense. Now we're seeing repeated occurrence. There might be something to it.

I was going to get one of these when people said the dpad was fixed, but now that I know it's not. This isn't something I'll ever have to worry about. I would be much happier sending Nintendo money and being able to turn on my Switch 2 from across the room, but first world problems.
The shitty d-pad is probably my biggest gripe about the controller. I also don't like how satiny smooth the concaved part of the sticks are.

I have put in a good amount of time on my S2 (and a lot of that time with Splatoon 3, so heavy gyro usage) and that pro controller is fucking sexy, I love it. I can see it vying for top controller of all time for me at this rate. So obviously no, I haven't had any issues that the OP described.

Well, just tried the Switch 1 Pro Controller for a few hours and zero pain or discomfort.

Then I tried the switch 2 pro controller, pain started coming back.

Switched back to the switch 1 pro controller, pain went away.

In my case, the difference in width and height made all the difference.

Glad the switch 1 pro controller works as good as I remember.
Even though I have no issue with the Pro 2 I am glad Nintendo still supported using the Pro 1 with the console for people like you that have these issues. It just really sucks that you can't wake the device out of sleep with the Pro 1 (unless that has changed), and Nintendo should really patch that.

Also sorry for the double post, just saw this comment after my first post.

4 days with the most amazing controller ever made so far (amazing sticks and grip buttons), I'm one day before it harms my hand and stops being that amazing

My biggest issue is the texture. At first it had this sort of rubbery grippy texture on it but it soon fades away and becomes SUPER SLIPPERY. I still enjoy the controller but I have to wonder what Nintendo was thinking with this coating. My DualSense Edge 'rubber' texture on the grips still feels amazing to this day and I've put that thing through hundreds of hours of use. My Switch 2 Pro controller is already slippery and feels like it slides around your hands. Factor in not having REAL paddles and instead having those little buttons where the paddles would have been, it makes pressing them a bit annoying cuz the controller moves around your hand too much so you never have the confidence to hit those buttons perfectly at all times.

Here's a comparison between both controllers. Maybe my hands are too big for the Pro 2 controller? My thumb reaches all the way on both so that's not the issue. I think maybe the smaller width and shorter grips are the culprits.

In case anyone is interested, I asked ChatGPT to compare my hand placement in both images for both controllers and here's what it said:

One great idea it suggested is to buy a Switch 2 Pro Controller grip to make it bigger and bulkier, that should help. I searched all over and looks like that doesn't exist yet, but the closest I found is this one on amazon, excited to see if that helps:

The tumbsticks feel too mushy to me for playing smash.

Idk how to say it but they don't have enough tension I think. The 8bitdo sticks do feel better

When I first got my Switch 2 and started playing with the new pro controller, I wasn't impressed. The only new feature is the GL/GR buttons, and I don't like them and will probably never ever use them. In general, it felt a little different and odd in my hands. I can't think of the word for the finish on the plastic, but it almost felt like it was covered by a layer of fine baby powder. Felt kinda slippery.

But all it took was some getting used to. After a few days the battery was out so I plugged it in and left to charge and went back to my old Switch 1 pro controller. Now that feels weird to me, I'm so used to the slippery new controller, the old one feels like it's covered in sticky sugar candy residue. (I took a wet wipe to it very thoroughly, it's not!)

I just got the pro controller and haven't tried it yet as I don't have my switch 2 yet but my first impressions are that it is a controller for ants

The more gamers age, the more ergonomic design will become a priority.

When I was a kid I could handle the NES and SNES controllers for hours. You ask me to do the same now, I would be in excruciating pain in a few minutes.
Getting old sucks.

maybe playing too much since you got the S2.

Are you using the back buttons? I imagine those could tweak some hands.

I'd just relax the grip. Give the hands some rest. Break out another controller once in awhile to vary the grip. I do joycons quite a bit and did it on Switch. Everyone hates them, but always thought they did many things better.

Either way always felt like going to joycons or going back to Pro controller felt great each time.
I know when I got my steam deck using those back buttons REALLY fucked up my hands, however I found some great attachments I printed and put some 3m tape to hold them on and it was like night and day with the deck and became a joy to use.
My first thought on holding the switch 2 pro controller was that those back buttons seemed exactly like the deck ones, flat to the back and difficult to use comfortably
To be hones5 when I do even remember that the controller has them and I map them it's been useful.. for example I matched the mapping for hogwarts to what I used on my series s elite 2 controller where left is mapped to the scan environment button and the the right one to some other function I can't remember and found that useful.
Reading the thread though I'm going to look at the pro2 and see if I can adapt the deck buttons I printed to it and see if helps

Heard mixed opinions on its Dpad and the Dpad on the first Switch Pro Controller is fucking abysmal. I will wait some more before picking one up to see if another option that can actually wake the console comes up.

I barely use it because I play everything I can with the stick, but I made a test and you easily get some side input by pressing down and try to tilt it a little, I'd suggest to people that really use it intensively to get another controller unless that issue is actually a feature for you, idk

Imagine Nintendo getting slapped with a class action lawsuit.

Then again, they'd probably just raise game prices to $100 to offset it and punish gamers.
