Buying a 4K TV for PS4K thread!

While 60" is by no stretch of the imagination too large for 4K content at 5-6 feet, keep in mind that you will almost certainly be watching a variety of 1080p content as well for quite some time.

You'd have superhero vision if you did.

Go 60". It's better to get the bigger screen imo. I just got the 65", I'm sitting about 8-9 feet away and I'm in love.

5-6 ft is the ideal viewing distance for a 4K TV in the 55-65" range.

If you have the money, always go bigger.

Well for reference, I have 20/20 vision. With the 50 inch I just got, I stop seeing pixels when I'm 3 feet away. So I don't think seeing pixels at 5 feet away will be an issue even if you go for a 60 inch TV.
Lol, duly noted then. Might spring for the 65" then.

Still conflicted on the size whether I should get the 55" or 60". It'll be in a small bedroom that I've converted into an entertainment room and I'll be sitting about 5-6 feet away.

Price difference is only about $200.
5 or 6 feet is a little close. I sit around 7 ft from my 55" and it's good enough. I think it may simply depend on how much you don't mind the TV dominating a small room. That said if it is supposed to be a room specifically for gaming I say go for bigger!

Albeit at a low bitrate, Netflix has 4k streaming. Once I get my 4k TV, I plan on using them as my main source until Redbox gets around to stocking 4k movies. Cable won't get on the wagon for another decade, though.

I've watched some of it, and it's impressive despite the bitrate – but only a small subset of the NetFlix catalog is available in 4K at the moment. It seems like their own original content is likely to be available relatively quickly, but for everything they don't own it gets a lot more complicated.

Shinobi the #1 regret is always screen size. If you feel you can go bigger, go bigger. Unless you genuinely don't have the space. But if it is 5" then go for bigger size.

Netflix 4K library is even more limited in Canada. Aside from the original shows and things like crappy Adam Sandler movies, there is just some nature stuff, and maybe Ghostbusters and Breaking Bad in 4k. YouTube demos aren't too great either. TV saturation is coming, they need to massively increase content. But then againn these same greedy companies still only give low bitrate 720p/1080i broadcasts.

I pulled the trigger on a 55" KS8500 today since Best Buy discounted them even lower this week. Originally I went in to get the KS8000, but the 8500 was the same price and the stats are exactly the except a little better for gaming with the 8500 according to rtings. This is going to be a single person TV, so the curved works fine for me and it's not a deal breaker (and embarrassed to say I kind of like it).

Any other KS8000/8500 owners out there have tips for setting this up for gaming? I noticed a stupid amount of lag before I turned a bunch of the extra bullshit off and threw it into Gaming Mode, but I noticed that the colors are a little washed out. Is there a way to fix that?

Is there any reason to buy a Sony XBR-X800d when a 49" Samsung KS8000 is only 300 bucks more ? Might as well just save up the extra 300 bucks right ? Or is there something better about the Sony ? Both are being heavily recommended here right now.

The 43" Sony X800D is recommended because it is the cheapest 10-bit VA panel out there, and has decent input lag. The 49" and 55" models have IPS panels, though, and therefore has lower contrast than the 43". The Samsung KS8000 is more expensive, but it is a better TV (especially for HDR), since it has better contrast and more brightness. It also offers great (low) input lag, regardless of resolution and with both HDR on and off.

If I were you, I'd definitely go for the 49" Samsung, if that's the size you want. The 50" Sony is no match.

Monitors have better colors and more ports along with a less expensive cost. However, I'm a noob coming from a 720p tv owned for five years.

Should I buy a 4K TV or 4K monitor? If so, which one? Please advise me, kind experienced 4K knowledgeable people.

It depends. What are you looking for/what is important to you? Size? Budget? Is input lag important to you?

Looking at the 65 inch Sony Bravia modle for like 1299. But I hear the Samsung 8000 series is really good as well.

I know Sony upadtes the firmware for the HRD stuff... so I guess its curved screen or flat screen.

At 49", the KS8000 is the better television. But your question has the answer as well. For a lot of people, 1/3rd the cost of the television more is a lot. So if the $330ish is not an issue go for it. But when you start thinking like that, you can say it for pretty much any product. Why buy PS4 for $249 when PS4 Pro is $399 etc. The value of the X800D series is in what you get for the price.

My budget is $600. Multiple USB and HDMI ports are important to me. USB C and quick charge would be nice but those options cost $1000. The max screen size I want is 34 inches. Input lag is important because I play console fighting games and shooters casually. There's a chance I connect this monitor to my retina macbook pro as well.Any help is greatly appreciated, please??

Bestbuy has the KS8000 55" on sale for $1200 and the 65" on sale for $1700.

Birthday is this weekend so I might treat myself and spring for the 65". I feel like I'd regret not getting the bigger one...especially when I think about spreading that extra 500 over the course of say 5 years of me owning the TV.

People who are using the 4K LG OLED's, how noticeable is the input lag in a real life situation? I'm not a competitive gamer but I do enjoy occasional multiplayer fights. I'm planning to go OLED but seemingly high input lag is the only thing that's bothering me.

I have had a 2016 LG OLED for several weeks now, the B6P. I have it in game mode on the newest (as of last night ,firmware 04.30.40) and do not have any issues with gaming on the PS4 or Wii U. Going from a Panasonic VT50 Plasma to the OLED feels the same to me, no issues.

Thanks. I actually used this settings last night but I did it before selecting game mode and thought that it kept what it could. After awhile of poking around I noticed that you can change them again after selecting game mode and that helped. The biggest issue is that Game Mode turns sharpness to like 90 or something ridiculous, when to me it should be around 10.

Are you able to change sharpness, for example, while you have it set to game mode? Or are you stuck with sharpness up at 90?

I use these settings on my KS8000:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XaPNxfSBOJU

I duplicated the standard movie mode settings under the game mode presets and am generally pleased with the results. I did need to play with the 2-point white balance setting to help reduce an overall yellowish tint to skin tones but it was an easy change to play around with.

Once I'm playing a game in HDR using game mode, I kick up the backlight to 20, set the Smart LED to High and change the color over to native and I'm all set. I switch them back down for an SDR game. I do hope Sammy builds in both an SDR and HDR settings menu for game mode, too. It's not a /big/ deal but I hate having to adjust settings between SDR/HDR games!

Are you able to change sharpness, for example, while you have it set to game mode? Or are you stuck with sharpness up at 90?
You can absolutely change sharpness along with all other facets of the image. Game mode has its own "mode" for value adjustments. So if you have movie mode selected and then enable the game mode option, you can now adjust settings specific to game mode. The problem for me is that there different adjustments for HDR vs SDR but not different presents for each under game mode (whereas the TV enables a separate preset for HDR for say movie mode). Which is what I was mentioning above. I want two adjustable settings presets for each when game mode is enabled.

I can't even imagine a living room where people are sitting 5ft away from a 60" TV.
I'm 5-6ft away from my 55inch in my den which is a fairly open and sizeable basement. It's the perfect sitting distance, IMO.

Been wresting with this for some time. I'm trying to decide whether going from my Sony w900a to 49x800d would be worth the jump. The w900a has been one solid tv for gaming for the last 3 years I've had it.

I know the Ks8000 is considered one if the best but it's priced double here in Canada (1099 vs 2299).

I'm wondering if the difference is worth it in picture quality and if the picture will be better from w900a to the x800d since the w900a was a high end Sony tv and the x800d is considered a budget tv.

Any help or thoughts would be greatly appreciated as it's been driving me nuts.

Oh, sorry, you can definitely change it. What happened was I selected Movie mode, made all my adjustments and turned on Game Mode thinking it would keep all the settings. The menu makes it seem that Game Mode is an addition and not it's own preset, but now I'm guessing it's actually a preset.

Thanks, i'll take a look at those and see if it looks any better than the rtings setup.

Anyone got a Panasonic TX-58DX700B? Looking at getting this next month and would like some feedback.
Don't have one, but from what I've read the DX750/780 is quite a lot better, if you can afford it. I would've bought one already if they sold it here. Unfortunately only the DX700 is available here, but I'm not interested in that.

What video card are you running? How do you find using it as a monitor, essentially?
980ti. No issues at all. I'm primarily running most games @1080p with some mix up to native 4K at times.

Just make sure to enable UHD Color on the input you're connecting to on the TV for sharper text when using it as a monitor.

I've enabled UHD color for my primary connection to the TV (HDMI4) and that's running back to my Denon AVR720W receiver which passes HDR/4K. I have my UHD player, Xbox One S, PS4, PC and Cable box all running through the receiver for easy HDMI switching.

X800D is mid range. The only thing budget about it is the 60hz panel and no local dimming. But at 4K only the top flagship televisions have 4K 120hz which hasn't been implemented as content and gaming done at 4K 60hz.

Again like someone else asked, if your goal is 4k and HDR, there is no comparison. The picture on the X800D will blow what you see away. At 1080p, it becomes interesting because the upscalers on the X800D series are better than what you have on the 900a, but your television has 240 hz, 3d and local dimming. So at 1080p, you aren't going to see a change, it may even look worse to you.

The X800D is just a mid range 4K and HDR television for a low price.

As a X800D owner im pretty happy with the tv.

HDR on Shadow Warrior 2 running on my GTX1080 looks amazing. Same on movies. I just got an xbone s to be able to watch 4k movies. But i have seen content streamed from Netflix and Amazon. Both 4k and HDR look really nice. All the different apps allowing me to setup presets for each has been great. Really excited to see some good 4k movies tho and make the display shine.

The 60hz doesn't bother me... and some games i rather run at 1080p, and i really don't mind. Some i do at 4k but the display really does wonders to the image. Im really impressed with most games coming out really optimized to run so well at such a high resolution.

The local dimming sounds nice tho.

So I dunno where to ask but I figure its ok to ask here.

If I am looking to buy a better 1080p screen what features should I look for ? What are the best reasonably priced recommendations ?

My current TV supports 1080p but I feel that it looks blurry/washed out and doesnt have a great array of colours...

Same. The quality and price of the X800D cannot be beat. I got my television 43" for about $740 canadian before tax and it is for my room as I am going to get a new spec 2017 larger 65" next year for the living room.

But the quality is crazy. I downloaded some reference material to view, I watch 4K demos on youtube, watched all of daredevil and luke cage at 4k, even Ghostbusters 1 and 2 have never looked better.

I do notice judder during poor cable set top watching due to the 720p/1080i signals, but at 1080p and bluray and 4k, don't notice anything.

It also helps that i am not a TV aficionado that knows what a better tv looks like. So im just stunned at how good this one looks so far haha.

No hassle either, and i love that i can hook up my ps4 DS4 to the tv and include PS Now on it right away. So far, i rather pay for this model and sink the extra cash on an extended warranty than pay for something extra.

I have yet to see anything at 1080i, but i have seen low resolutions as streams kick in the 1080p haha. Overall tho, tv is pretty good at knowing what to do to make things look good.

I cannot watch regular 1080p now without feeling disappointment. You can watch 4K footage of some soccer matches and then you see the regular ole 720p/1080i NFL broadcasts on Sunday and you think it looks like trash in a sense. Ghostbusters 2 for such an old film really shows what 4k remasters will do. Even the 1080p new version of ghostbusters 2 looks amazing because of it. PS4 Pro will look amazing and then Scorpio next year.

Just wanted let everyone know the 65 inch ks8000 is in stock at Samsung EPP for under $1300. So if you work somewhere that participates you can get a heck of a deal.

Really weird. Rtings same one thing, hdtvtest.co.uk another.

According to this, difference between KS7000 (UK) and KS7500 (UK) :

When we reviewed the curved Samsung UE55KS7500 several months ago, we noted several shortcomings including subpar HDR performance and an edge enhancement bug. We’re pleased to report that we saw no such issues on the 49in KS7000: perhaps Samsung had listened to feedback and ironed out the kinks; or the flat-panel version wasn’t affected in the first place.

Never really bought a TV around Black Friday. Tempted to buy the 65" KS8000 from Best Buy for 1699. Anyone with experience, do you think it will drop down much around then?

Unit to unit variability might account for that. It's unfortunate but true that not every television of the same model offers identical performance. It's worth putting a new one through its paces to make sure it lives up to expectations and matches what you see in the showroom (though I've seen one display model with horrific edge light bleed that I wouldn't put in the public view, so even those aren't guaranteed to be stellar examples.)
