Do you own games for anime/ popular series you're familiar with, but don't follow?

For example, I read the One Piece manga from time to time but I'm barely done with the Davy Back Fight arc and haven't read it in months but I own One Piece Pirate Warriors 1 & 2. I used to watch Naturo but then just stopped after the Shikamaru/Asuma arc years ago yet I own Naruto UNS Revolution. Most recently, I've been playing a lot of DB Xenoverse 1 despite only watching the anime from time to time with my brother as a kid. Xenoverse has been making me interested in DBZ though, but in the unexpected form of getting me into DBZ Abridged and it's fucking hilarity.

This doesn't just apply to anime, obviously. I think a western example would be something like owning the Transformers games from last gen despite not really being into Transformers.

Additionally, has owning a game for a series you weren't into actually made you into a fan? I feel like this is happening with me and Dragon Ball because of Xenoverse.

I bought The Wolf Among Us game despite never having heard of the series it's based on beforehand. Still hoping we'll get a second season.

not when I don't know who half the cast of Pirate Warriors 2 is

and that's not even Pirate Warriors 3.

I guess I meant just not being caught up with it.

I didn't know it was based on an actual series, lol.

I bought The Walking Dead games before watching the show/reading the comic. Never jumped onto anime games if I wasn't a fan of the series. I feel like a lot of the appeal is for people who enjoy the source material.

I bought that one fate extra game for psp but I don't consume any fate material.

I still dunno what it's about.

Anime games usually serve as pretty decend compendiums for their respective series, so it's fine. Naruto: UNS 1, 2 and 4 are pretty fantastic catch up material if you've ever been interested in naruto, but don't want to sit through 800 episodes.

You don't get too much of that for western properties. Most of those stories are usually pretty poorly written original content that's barely worth mentioning.

Can't say I'm a fan of Sword Art Online. I watch the anime, but it wasn't the most pleasant time, but it did fell into "So bad it's good" territory for me.

But I do have to say that Hollow Fragment is a pretty fine game; put over a hundred hours on it, and I'd put another hundred one.

EDIT: Oh yeah, I did play The Wolf Among Us without reading the source material too

I've bought Gundam games without having watched most of the UC stuff (only watched 8th MS Team, War in the Pocket, and Stardust Memories). I also consistently buy Super Robot Wars despite not having watched more than 50% of the featured franchises.

Tatsunoko vs. Capcom maybe? I was familiar with the vs. series and Capcpom roster but I at the time the only Tatsunoko hero I could name was Speed Racer. (Who wasn't even in the game.)

Nope, I become interested in the games only after having watched the anime. Most recent example is Arslan Senki, when I saw the musou on the PS store immeditaly after finishing the anime I instabought it haha.

Though to be fair for some others like Steins;Gate and Persona, I only found out they had anime out after playing the games so naturally I watched them to compare.

In both cases, didn't the game come first before the anime was made? Not sure if anime based on the game counts.

I bet I have almost a dozen Naruto games but I stopped even halfway keeping up with the series maybe like halfway through it? It was pretty long.

I buy the Naruto Ultimate Ninja whatever games. Not only do I not follow the series, I actively dislike it. Those games are damn fun though.

I was given a copy of Naruto UNS2 to review and I literally new nothing of the series. Ended up really enjoying it and would probably buy another Naruto game in the future if I had enough time to play it (I've had two kids since playing UNS2). I thought the game's environments and overall world were amazing, and j enjoyed the button-mashy combat.

I did have to look up what a "Pervy old sage" was though.

I play Melty Blood and I don't even know the backgrounds of each character well. I just only know that the characters are from the same company (Type-Moon) that has that Fate series which I've only seen Fate/Zero.

I have a Bleach fighting game on DS, I have only seen a few episodes but the game was made by Treasure so I had to buy it.

Pokemon - the thread?
I jave lost interest in DBZ long ago but I still play and enjoy the xenoverse games.

So Naruto is a counter example for poor writing now?

Absolutely no. I guess I basically screen them out. Would be a shame if I've missed some great games... but I doubt this.

I really enjoyed the original Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm game on PS3 despite never having watched the anime or read the manga. I was disappointed by the 2nd UNS game though and never touched a Naruto game again after that. I still have yet to watch or read the series either.

I own a copy of Cross Edge and have no idea who 2/3rds of the characters are.

Ugh, what a shit game. It's still one of my biggest gaming purchase regrets. I was starved for a PS3 JRPG and it had characters from a lot of my favorite games at the time like Disgaea, Ar tonelico and Mana Khemia.

But really, do anime adaptations of video games count? I see mentions of Pokemon and Fate, but those were games first before they were anime.

There is no Tsukihime anime.

I just bought the first Naruto Storm game so yeah, but I bought it so I could go through the series as I've heard a lot that it's the best adaption of the manga

There's supposed to be a Tsukihime Manga and Visual Novel correct?

And I remember someone on my Twitter timeline saying he watched an anime movie/oav(?) that had the female with the dagger, Shiki? I forget.

Anyway, I just assumed OP meant anything that looked like "Anime" as being from Japan seeing as he said he only read the Manga of One Piece, and the majority of anime are just adaptations of either a Manga or Light Novels anyway.

I own Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment for the Vita and PS4 despite hating the anime and light novel. Pretty fun games. Screw Silica.

"There is no Tsukihime anime" is a played out inside joke from Type-Moon fans about the poor adaptation of the anime. The one with the female Shiki you're thinking of is The Garden of Sinners.

I own Gundam Extreme VS Full Boost while having watched/read nothing of Gundam outside of like the first volume of Seed and whatever anime the God Gundam was from as a kid.

God damn what a game, the PS4 sequel should be fantastic.

Shown jump (ps4).

I know a lot of anime, but there are tons of anime(hxh, OP, etc) that I do not follow. I know a majority of them tho (basically the better ones):

Rorouni Kenshin
Yu yu
Db
Etc etc.
Etc
Gintama

That's a different thing from Tsukihime (same creator though)

Male Shiki = Tsukihime (Shiki Tohno)

Female Shiki = Kara no Kyoukai (Shiki Ryougi)
Kara no Kyoukai are also a series of movies only

I can't picture myself buying a game without the knowledge of the source material.

Highly doubt that. I've yet to meet someone who knows the majority of anime. There must be thousands of anime series out there.

Yes, it's pretty good but some films are stronger than others. Currently, there's no legal way to stream the series which blows. Your only option is to blind buy the set which can be expensive depending on your region. I think it was around $250 to import the blu-ray set from Amazon Japan.

If you're from the UK or have a region-free player I'd recommend this:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00MFT0E1O/

Still pricey, but better.

edit: I didn't realize those were the DVDs. Dang.

It's a joke (the anime was terrible). The manga is just based on the visual novel, and visual novels are technically games.

Manga and light novels are fine I think, just that anime adapted from games are kind of missing the point of the OP, I guess.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
The Walking Dead and The Wolf Among Us aka Fables. Never watched/read any nor do I have any intentions on doing so.

Yeah, I hate region locking which was why at least Blu-rays are a little better for where you can import from.

Yeah, I didn't realise it went the other way around since it started as a game and then expanded to other media.

One Piece Pirate Warriors 3

Got it on sale, curious about the franchise but its too long to want to catch up.

Multiple Gundam games that feature X, Turn A, and the various manga only stuff.

I own (and occasionally play) this game. It's that Jojo's Bizarre Adventure fighting game. Only several months after I bought it did I realize that the source material is an anime show. Suffice to say, I have never watched an episode of the anime series in my life.

EDIT: Dunkley's post below made me go look up more about Jojo. It started as a manga series! The more you know...

Batman: Arkham City is my only exposure to the Batman franchise besides of course the obvious stuff you pick up through pop culture about it.

And JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Heritage For The Future was my first exposure to the franchise before I started reading the manga years later.

Weirdly enough although Stardust Crusaders was my entry point to the series due to the fighter being based on it, it was Battle Tendency, Diamond Is Not Crash (chew) and Steel Ball Run which ended up becoming my favorite parts
