Considering selling largely unused PC in favor of PS4 Pro, want advice on sale method

Combined with SATA3 on the Pro, load times can be up there too, hopefully.
Uh...no. Load times on consoles are not a result of the HDD interface by any means.

As for the OP, if the 'group he games with' is primarily PS4, then it's not that outrageous a decision - you wanna play with your friends, resolution/framerate be damned (and a Pro is certainly comparable if not superior to a 970). I wouldn't be without a PC/Mac for daily life as I don't think Chromebooks/iPads can fill that gap well enough, but for general use a $500 PC is perfectly fine and would be decent enough for indies - but even indies almost always have a PS4 version regardless and you'll end up getting a good chunk of them with PS Plus.

I actually think the newer iteration of consoles might put some pressure on the PC gaming market, at least with respect to games that require high-end GPU's. It's the problem of diminishing returns. When you have sub-1080p, screen tearing, sub-30fps, and a PC GPU to blow past them is $200, PC's have a much stronger argument, at least with respect to putting up with the PC quirks. But when it's 1800p checkerboard vs 2160p, and HDR vs no HDR (currently) - you're basically going with the PC for 60fps in more titles. Which is understandable, I love 60fps - but the advantages are shrinking. Dunno, I have a very low-end PC and without the Pro I probably would be looking at least at a 1060 and new CPU for sure in the next few months, but now...? Not sure I'll primarily be a PC gamer in a years time.

The gaming point is understandable in your case.
A big question is simply, if you don't need your PC for other things. Work, school, university or maybe even just hobbies ?.

I really don't at this time. I actually already do nearly everything in a browser as it stands. My program list is, no joke, Hitman, drivers, and Chrome.

Yeah, it's a dumb idea. Selling hardware you no longer think you need because you're in love with something else new and shiny almost always ends up with you wishing you still had the hardware at some point later as soon as the honeymoon period with your new tech is over. Give it through the end of the year, your hardware isn't going to depreciate in value significantly between now and then. Think about all the things you can do with a PC that you won't be able to do in the walled garden of Sony. Save the money to buy a PS4 Pro if you want one but don't cannibalize your PC to do so, you'll regret it.

The main reason why I haven't upgraded my PC is because I foresee myself moving a lot and selling a PC is a hassle, much unlike a console.

Some details:

I currently own a regular PS4. I am buying a Pro either way, this isn't to fund its purchase, but instead get rid of a redundant device. The group I game with is straight PS4, so that's a big deal.

My rig:

GTX 970
Core i5-4670k
16 gigs of ram at 2400
Benq 24 inch G-Sync Monitor (not the greatest panel, but I can't lie... g-sync is badass)

be honest you only posted this to rile people up

I should add I wouldn't be without a computer. I was considering buying a laptop (or Chromebook) since I'm likely going to be taking classes again come Spring.

Edit: Also I want to add I'm TOTALLY aware of this rig and it's significant power increase over a Pro. The fact of the matter is my group skews toward the PS4, so I skew toward the PS4. I rarely game on the PC anymore.

Sounds like a terrible idea to me. I mean I guess it all depends on your specs and what you want. I'd never consider taking the hit in performance, graphics, control methods, or overall usability by moving strictly to a console. But whatever floats your boat.

I'm getting a Pro...but eventually I still want to get a powerful PC for VR Gaming/Experience only on PC.....and Mods as well.

maybe Star Citizen.

but yeah if you are not that into VR or Mods... probably better. to sell.

I've got an i5, 980ti and a 1440p gsync monitor... But I prefer gaming on my PS4, even if multi-plats don't look as good.

I can't Destiny on PC and it's about the games and friends for me.

I'm getting a PS4 Pro at launch too, but you couldn't make me sell my PC. I couldn't stand doing all of my computing on a laptop. I have to have my PC for when I have downtime at home. It's my favorite device, basically.

Whatever you do, don't sell your desktop unless you at least have a laptop to fall back on. Getting by on "only" a ps4 pro and a (for example) smartphone, just wouldn't cut it for me. I like having the full breadth of features that a real computer provides.

I did the same a year and a half ago and I'm happy I did. Don't miss it one bit. Everything I want is on consoles.

I do my browsing on a tablet, mainly. Laptop is only for some documents.

edit: since you rarely play on it anymore definitely sell it.

With more console games getting PC ports than ever, I feel like my experience is exactly the opposite. Of course, I still buy all of the platforms for exclusives, but if a game is multiplatform including PC, I don't have any reason not to pick PC.

This is where i'm at, and have been at for years.

If its about wanting to game with friends, thats totally understandable. Its a great reason to get a Pro in your case.

However your PC is more powerful than the Pro. It will still run all multiplats better, so single player games would be better off played on your PC.

Also consider that the target framerate of the Pro will largely, if not totally still be 30fps, whereas your PC is easily a 60fps machine if you want it to be.

There are also other reasons to go all in on consoles, such as simplicity and not wanting to deal with PC issues (provided you experience any, which nowadays I rarely do). So I'm not going to tell you its crazy.

But its crazy.

I'm also at a crossroads at the moment. Should I buy a GTX 1070 (and replace my aging 680), or would I get more out of PSVR maybe?

I was the exact opposite.

Once the PS Pro was announced I went "this seems kinda dumb. I like them high framerates" so I finally started down the path of building a new PC and now I am waiting for the final parts to arrive.

Yes, I can state with 100% certainty this is crazy.

Go for it. I would have considered the same thing if I was in a similar situation.

There's nothing crazy about selling your gaming PC towards whatever you like.

I don't see why the Pro coming out is playing a factor on this then when a regular PS4 would be enough.

If literally all your computing needs are covered by your phone or whatever and you don't play any PC games at all and never will and have never even considered it, then sure, it's a fine idea.

If you use your computer for anything remotely beyond what a smartphone can do then no, it is a terrible and dumb idea. If it is strictly a gaming PC that you only install games on and you have lost all interest in the titles you own for it, then it is still a dumb idea.

Better multipayer performance and getting rid of an expensive piece of tech that doesn't get used enough.

People in here calling the OP crazy are those who use their PCs often, so they don't see it from his perspective.

I'm increasingly convinced that asking questions like this on a site such as this is borderline pointless. There are a lot of opinions here, and the range of experiences and expectations people have is exceptionally wide.

When I was in college I could barely afford anything. I had to open a credit card to get a PS2 because I wanted FFX so badly. Prior to that, video games may as well have been synonymous with Nintendo.

Now, many years later, I have more money than time, and if NVIDIA would announce a 1080ti, I'd probably buy it, even though I have a 980, in addition to my PS4, Xone, and WiiU.

I'm not saying that to brag or anything - it's a natural progression of things. So, OP, I can't tell you how to live your life. If I was your age and I had a decent PC, I'd be thrilled. But, at the time, the thought of extra cash would have thrilled me even more, which is why I have so much student loan debt. In my current situation, I don't want to miss some really exceptional exclusive that only releases on one platform. Back then, though, I only cared about Nintendo games and the multiplayer games on the 64.

If you can get a few bucks, I'd say go for it. Ten years down the road, you can say to yourself "what games did I miss in the mind 2010s because I sold my PC?" and play them then - except you also won't have as much free time in ten years as you do now.

I have similar specs with you and I love my PS4 too and will be getting a Pro. Don't do it though, with a PC you can do a lot more with it than a PS4. Save up and buy a PS4 Pro.

Sell your PS4 for a Pro.

Selling something of yours only to get another of something you have is never a good idea from my experience.

ps4 pro will be sub $300 in no time

if you're really strapped for cash it might be a good idea but otherwise you would have to be crazy IMO

Well if he's in need of money then yes, he should sell hardware he's not gonna use regardless of the Pro coming out. It's a bit of a pointless question when he's already expressed heavy preference for the platform and finds little use in his PC.

My pc has been an expensive chromebook for years with the occasional indie games and short periods of games that actually push my pc.
My $900 pc has been used to browse gaf and the web 95% of the time over the years, i know the feels OP lol

This inevitably happens to me about a year after I build a gaming rig, like clockwork. Part of the reason I only do it once a decade or so.

Pretty much what would happen if I bought a PC for gaming which is why I don't understand why people think that everyone who games needs a PC, and even then I pretty much only use it for streaming movies to my ps4.

OP I think it's a great idea especially if you don't use it often for it's intended purpose. I was trying to sell off parts for my PC, until the Mrs. didn't agree with it. I was going to do exactly what you are trying to do.

I play my Xbox one way more than my PC hell I played through the Gears 4 campaign on my Xbox one when I could've played it on my PC max settings 60fps all that. There's just something about PC gaming lately that I don't think is for me anymore. Enough about me do it!

I did the same thing. Kinda.

I only play on console basically because of the exclusives and friends so I sold my GTX 780 and I'm getting a smaller case for my PC.

Only use it for Uni and internet really.

Also getting the Pro

Why not just sell your current PS4 for $200 on Craigslist and use that to help fund your PS4 Pro purchase? Also, do you only play multiplayer games? I couldn't care less on what system my friends play Skyrim, Deus Ex Mankind Divided, Dishonored 2, Watch Dogs 2, etc.. I'd rather play them on the superior platform (hint: PC) where you can get 60+ fps, especially since you have G-sync.

Only multiplayer-centric games like Battlefield 1 and TF2 should matter where your friends play (although Titanfall 2 does have an awesome single player).

My gaming PC is a glorified email client, web browser but mostly used for Word processing. All of my friends are on PS4, I play all my games on PS4, except for Deus Ex and Mass Effect for some reason.

I won't sell mine but I don't blame you.

I'm sure there is a gap when it comes to power between a PC and a Pro but it's your decision at the end. Just make sure you don't regret it.

I'm really sorry I don't mean to derail the thread but is there an official PC GAF thread? I have a couple of questions about buying a good computer.

He already said this is not about funding a pro.
It's basically just selling a PC that he doesn't make use of, and he could still get a good amount of money for it.

Sell the PS4 and if you're still short on cash save up and get a PS4 Pro. You could sell the GPU and use on board GPU for your daily tasks and in the future if you end up wanting to keep the PC you can upgrade the GPU.

. Don't do it though, with a PC you can do a lot more with it than a PS4.
As he's said, he's probably going to get a cheap laptop for classes, which would probably serve him better than a PC desktop. He's not intending his Pro as a complete computing replacement.

He could sell his PC + PS4, have enough to get a Pro and a cheap laptop which sounds like it would be far more suitable for his needs. I mean really, if you're not gaming what do you need with a Gsync monitor & 970? He can spend $500 on a laptop and not miss anything on the PC side if he just uses it for school/officework like the vast majority of the populace.
