Nintendo Switch Presentation - January 12th

Lol
So much for all those told me that the generic 2017 tag for zelda meant nothing
At least that would mean they delay the game to make it better and not to hold it for Switch launch. Wouldn't be that hard to shallow, I know the game is being made a long time now but it's the first time Nintendo are doing something of such a big scope.

Considering how long it's been since 3D World I think it was always pretty fair to say that Mario Switch was probably pretty far along. I wouldn't have guessed it was THAT close to completion though. That's interesting.

When was the last time Nintendo released Mario and Zelda on the same console close together? Wasn't it the GameCube? (Sunshine in summer '02, Wind Waker in December?) Emily has also mentioned that they want Switch to have a strong momentum, so I guess having them close together isn't too unthinkable...

The situation is either that or now I guess Mario being at launch with Zelda for the holidays being another possibility. That'd mean Zelda going against RDR... Man, that'd be a battle for the ages.

Emily's tweets:

She's not saying that Zelda is delayed, just that Mario 3d is ready.

On one hand Mario is the better seller, but it can also be hit or miss in terms of perception and maybe it's time to have a Nintendo device launch without a Mario since day 1. On the other hand Zelda BotW has been received so well, maybe the best among all 3d Zelda.

Plus not having Zelda at launch would make all the promotion it got this year (E3 and after) pretty useless for Switch.

Sorry, but Capitan Todd has already Oreganoed. Too late for that.

I sincerly hope Zelda is at launch, while Mario is a bit later. Zelda is so perfect for the launch, and I fear Zelda + Mario would be way too overkill for the launch.

You do realize the last 2 Nintendo systems to launch with a Mario game was the Wii U and the 16 years before that, the N64. It's not nearly as common as one might think.

Metroid Prime 4: Dread, of course.

To be honest, if Metroid Prime 4 actually happened, I wouldn't be surprised if the subtitle was "Resurrection". Gotta keep at it with those Alien references, yo.

it also be fitting because it'd be the resurrection of the metroid series

I want info on Mario Switch. I hope the tie-in to the system name is, you are teaming up w Luigi in the single-player campaign. Not able to play the game w a friend, but you get to play as both Mario & Luigi. Switching between them to solve platforming problems.

Nintendo has too many good games we know about (or are rumoured/likely) that would work as holiday or launch games.

- Mario Switch
- Zelda
- Splatoon
- Mario Kart
- Smash Bros.
- Retro game

It's so hard to predict when each of these land because every single one of these would be a great choice for either. And that's discounting the other months of the year or other potential things in the works...

Zelda launches are even rarer. Twilight Princess is the only one in history.

and I fear Zelda + Mario would be way too overkill for the launch.

There is no such thing as an "overkill" when you are in Nintendo's current position on the gaming market. They really need to hit it out of the park with Switch. Zelda+Mario 3d (+ supposed MHXX port) would guarantee that.

I'll never understand why people need this many "friend" slots. The following function seems perfectly sufficient to me. I keep deleting "friends" because I find my lists too cluttered with random people I only interacted with briefly or for a specific game, etc.
1. It doesn't hurt to have.
2. I have more than 100+ people I know and interact with on the daily basis on social media that play games. This is not uncommon for most gamers.
3. People play different games, for example: While 30 of my friends regularly play Mario Kart and not CoD, I have 40 that plays CoD, 20 that play Overwatch, and 60 that play Monster Hunter. Which means I have a consistent amount of people I know I can partner/link up with in games than just playing with randoms.

I dunno, extended ports as your big holiday titles doesn't really sound as appealing as having a major new original Mario game.

Granted, if something like Mario did out for the holidays alongside Smash Switch to back it up, it'd be an easier pill to swallow especially if Smash had a whole buttload of new content. But I feel like having only that for the holidays with no new completely original games would look a bit awkward on Nintendo's part.

So if Emily's right, then Miyamoto lied? His comments on the status of Mario were only a few months ago

I know Nintendo has no problem with lying, but does Miyamoto have much of a history of it?

Press: Will there be another 3DS?
Miyamoto: No.

New 3DS announced.

Actually, I think if I had to go out on a limb, I'd say Splatoon is launch or launch window at latest.

I guess for Smash Bros. and Kart it would depend on how much new content they have, but honestly I think the IPs alone and the fact that many people skipped their Wii U installments are good enough.

But that said I think the ports will probably be there to supplement new games as well. Just if I had to guess. And I think Smash Bros. and Kart will have some distance between them too. I don't think the ports will all come all at once.

Now that I think about it, maybe Miyamoto was talking about a new 2D Mario game there.

2D Mario games have had a history of outselling 3D Mario games. NSMBWii was basically the reason the Wii dominated the Christmas of 2009. So perhaps that might be their big holiday title....

I didn't realize Miyamoto was the one to give that response. Then yep, he clearly has no issue with it lol

Looking back on the original quote, it's possible. But I think the implication was that he was talking about the next Mario game, but of course, it's impossible to say for sure

"We're always challenging ourselves to create something new, so hopefully you'll see a new kind of Mario in about a year or two," Shigeru Miyamoto said in an interview with IGN.

"Maybe next E3 we'll be able to share something."

I'm down for a new NSMB but only if it uses some kind of new or fresher art style and only if by purchasing it you get access to new items and elements in Super Mario Maker Switch.

Please. It makes too much sense.

I fully agree, the more titles they can push in the launch line-up window the better

I really hope they're done with the NSMB brand and make something truly new that looks different.

I really hope they're done with the NSMB brand and make something truly new that looks different.

Sure. They'd have to rebrand their 2D Mario series at that point though. Not something they like but maybe they're willing to do because they want to reboot everything.

One way to interpret "a new kind of Mario" is perhaps a general makeover for 2D Mario. The NSMB brand and aesthetics has unquestionably worn out its welcome and I'd hope Nintendo realizes this. Just drop the "New Super Mario Bros." name and go crazy with the game's presentation and scope. Get the guys and gals who worked on Mario Kart 8's soundtrack on it, for example.

I know the current market conditions suggest that Nintendo should hit it out of the park with Switch's launch lineup, but...while a 3D Mario and main Zelda would be a dream-like combo, there are several possibilities to consider

- the possibility of the two games impacting each other's full sales potential
- the possibility of both of them attracting such an uncharacterstically large share of overall launch software sales that other titles can't get enough room to breath (both Nintendo and third party)
- the possibility of those titles impacting even more negatively major and, above all, non-major third party games at launch

It would be interesting to witness, yes, but I have my doubts on the matter.

I really don't see how Zelda wouldn't be a launch title. They opened the Switch trailer with it, in my mind they clearly want to establish it as THE title to start the console. Especially with all the delays. The game is probably done.

On the other end if I'm being selfish... I'm not sure I'll be able to afford the Switch right at launch, but I really want to play and discover Zelda along with everybody. That could work in my favor lol

If it's true and they chose Mario over Zelda as a launch title and we get the game for the holidays, then at least I hope they polish it and add more things to it.

People also have to realize that the launch shipment will be sold out regardless. Generating hype and demand is fine but if both of those games coming out at launch would increase demand in a way supply couldn't satisfy, that would be bad.

I don't know what I'd want from a new 2D Mario. Other than visuals, how can they possibly improve upon NSMBU? NSMBU was soooooooo good. It's really a shame how much people ignored it or looked down on it purely because it was another NSMB game. Best 2D Mario game. Challenge mode is such a great addition to the franchise and if the next 2D Mario doesn't have something similar I'll be incredibly disappointed.

I cant imagine two months for 3D Mario launch hype though, maybe they will have it by May or June

At the end of the day I do think the main takeaway from Emily's tweets is not "Zelda will be delayed for sure" but more "Mario is probably closer to completion than you think". Not that Zelda being delayed is unthinkable, but overall I don't think it's her central thesis.

The event has to hit very hard in order for Switch to be relevant at this stage. PS4 is a just an absolute juggernaut, and next year's Scorpio puts Nintendo in a tough spot.

The reveal definitely restored my confidence in Nintendo, and the concept seems poised for success. Switch will be a beastly first party machine, but they still need to maintain strong third party support this time.

The two month wait had better be worth it.

Exactly.

Just have both. You wanna launch your console off with a bang? Release a 3D Mario and Zelda at the same exact time.

I don't think this for the sole point that Retro has veered away from cliche subtitles. There is nothing worse than games generically named "Revelations" or "Genesis" or "Resurrection" or "Origins." I'm glad they opt for more unique titles like "Echoes" or "Tropical Freeze."

How can Zelda be delayed when it was only given a 2017 release date...

I think when people say "delay" it's shorthand for "not being a launch game". Various things have basically just led to people assuming it will be the case but it's true there's never been an official commitment.

I realize now after writing it that I said "delay" and so to be clear I meant "delayed from a hypothetical launch window release". This was in the context of Emily's tweets which talked about "not being surprised if Mario is a day 1 launch instead of Zelda" and not ruling out the possibility of it being in the launch window.

It won a bunch of Best of E3 awards and it's THE Nintendo game to look forward to.

Now imagine a world in which the NX didn't leak months before its reveal. Imagine seeing the guy walk to his TV, take out this handheld and continue playing Zelda on the go. That was the wow moment Nintendo wanted to stick with people. It did, but not to the extent they wanted because of the leaks.

What I'm trying to say is Zelda was the best game to show the core functionality of the Switch since it's one of the most hyped games in Nintendo's recent history going by the people running to the Zelda booth at E3. I get where you're coming from but I don't think Zelda at launch is a lock because of the trailer.

It is true that most assumed it to be a launch game due to amiibo release date listing and such.

What the hell, I thought Miyamoto told people to maybe look forward to 3D Mario footage at E3 2017 and now it's a launch title?

Remember how that footage at E3 2017 turned out? We saw the game two weeks ago.

Do what
No giving my hopes as facts?
I would say that having doubts about nintendo in terms of first party droughts, marketing positioning and third party support is pretty legitimate

Defaulting to negative and taking this interpretation as set in stone.

It is true that most assumed it to be a launch game due to amiibo release date listing and such.

People are fragile these days. Image the madness when Nintendo doesn't tweet a new screenshot or artwork for a few weeks... :D

I wonder if people would been a little more receptive to NSMBU had A. Nintendo not called it "New Super Mario Bros." and B. NSMB2 not being a thing that also came out in the same exact year.

See, NSMB DS and Wii were exciting novelties when they first came out for multiple reasons. NSMB was the first 2D Mario game we got in nearly 14 years, and NSMB Wii was the first console 2D Mario game in 19 years when it came out. NSMB Wii also notably greatly expanded the scope of its gameplay from the first game, introducing new concepts to the series like four player co-op and more interesting and complex level designs, as well as the inclusion of new power ups and bringing Yoshi into the mix. Naturally all of this got people excited and we ate it all up, which led to Nintendo stealing the holidays of 2009.

NSMB 2 and U just didn't really have that same "wow" factor unfortunately. They just felt like NSMB games made for the sake of having more NSMB games. They didn't really have anything that substantial other than some throwaway features like the gamepad platform gimmick and the coin collecting stuff. Having them both come out in literally the same year, only a few months away from each other, also really didn't help things. If there's one series at Nintendo that screams for a big mixup/overhaul, it's New Super Mario Bros.

Remember how that footage at E3 2017 turned out? We saw the game two weeks ago.

Hmm, the specifics of that footage are not known I think. As in, was that Mario game really running on the Switch? Can we infer the status of the 3D Mario game from just that?

What the hell, I thought Miyamoto told people to maybe look forward to 3D Mario footage at E3 2017 and now it's a launch title?

People say a lot of things at E3. We should keep in mind that they are in full PR mode, have to talk to people everyday for 12 hours, and everything they're saying has to be translated and reported to various sites. Who knows what he meant or if he even meant it.

I still believe the "you can go straight to the final boss" comment from Aonuma will be mostly bullshit too. People ran with it, but who knows what the context was?

Point is, we shouldn't take everything said during the E3 craze so seriously.

According to Nintendo, no.

According to common sense, yes.

But despite that, I wouldn't consider the "reveal" of what we saw of Mario anything close to the capacity Miyamoto was talking about--especially since it isn't even officially confirmed yet
