So, let's say Hilary wins the election... what are the chances Citizens United actually gets over turned? And will we really, in a practical way, see a decrease in corporate spending on elections and individual donor influence?

Citizen's United probably won't be over-turned immediately, but I would expect the Supreme Court to get round to it within the next decade. Would that make a difference to corporate spending on politicians: absolutely not.

It absolutely would.

There's a diminishing returns factor on money in politics, but at the smaller levels the influence of unlimited money has been hugely consequential. It's a big part of how the Republicans took so many state legislatures and local posts. Reinstating campaign finance limits would be a major blow.

So I checked my facebook timeline in 2012 to see how I reacted to the last election and apparently I was a raging republican who was pissed that obama won, blocked people celebrating, and posted things like "I'm tired of everyone on this facebook being flaming liberals". Now I'm the complete opposite.

I dont even remember any of that honestly. I guess back then the only political influences I had were fox news and my parents, and now I'm in college and view GAF all the time. So it makes sense why I changed so dramatically.

Good for you. Lots of people have access to information but don't change anyway. Usually they refer to Gaf in a 3rd person as if they weren't apart of it.

Besides the obvious WH, Senate, and House, I'm looking forward to how the following will go:

Medical Marijuana in
FL (will probably pass)
AR (no idea)
MT (will probably fail)
ND (will probably fail)

Retail Marijuana in
CA (will probably pass)
AZ (no idea)
MA (will probably pass)
ME (will probably pass)
NV (will probably pass)

Single Payer Healthcare in CO (will probably fail)
Drug Price standards in CA (no idea)

Firearm measures (i.e. background checks) in CA, ME, NV, and WA. (no idea how they will vote)

I'm also really looking forward to the Puerto Rican gubernatorial election. The guy currently leading in the polls there is running on pro statehood (i.e. his number one issue). Will be interesting to see if they'll really push forward for PR 51 if he really wins it.

Say hello to the Weed revolution. Get out and vote, stoners.

I got peeved in high school once because I heard other kids talking shit about Bush Jr. (I lived in Texas at the time)

We all make mistakes.

I went from neocon to communist in about a year.

The New Yorker said:
Queen offers to restore british rule over United States.

LONDON (The Borowitz Report)—In an unexpected televised address on Saturday, Queen Elizabeth II offered to restore British rule over the United States of America.

Addressing the American people from her office in Buckingham Palace, the Queen said that she was making the offer “in recognition of the desperate situation you now find yourselves in.”

“This two-hundred-and-forty-year experiment in self-rule began with the best of intentions, but I think we can all agree that it didn’t end well,” she said.

The Queen urged Americans to write in her name on Election Day, after which the transition to British rule could begin “with a minimum of bother.”

Elizabeth acknowledged that, in the wake of Brexit, Americans might justifiably be alarmed about being governed by the British parliamentary system, but she reassured them, “Parliament would play no role in this deal. This would be an old-school monarchy. Just me, and then, assuming you’d rather not have Charles, we could go straight to William and those children of his who have mesmerized you so.”

Using the closing moments of her speech to tout her credentials, the Queen made it clear that she has never used e-mail and has only had sex with one person “very occasionally.”

I'd say go for it, America.

This seems like a good thread to remind FL GAF that the solar amendment on the ballot this year is actually a scam, don't vote yes on it.

https://www.thenation.com/article/will-florida-voters-be-duped-into-killing-solar-power/

I voted against it, but I think it'll pass. I think it needs 60% + and I still think it passes.

welp, i was scammed. There seemed nothing negative about solar in that amendment.

Case in point. I think this will be an extremely common view.

I'm rooting for Arizona to flip. Not just because it's my home state, but also to help drive home the point that when the GOP messes around with candidates like Trump, they lose red states.

I know Trump really has a fascist following but this comment took the cake for me

But with Arizona looking to swing for Hillary there is hope for a big lead

People change. My mom flipped to a liberal after 08. I voted Kerry and Obama twice, but won't vote this time.

It's almost over GAF... it's almost over. Just a few more days. I wish I wasn't working the night of the election. Sometimes my patients will have Fox News on and start talking to me about politics and it makes me sooo uncomfortable. Even worse when my coworkers start bringing it up.

I think this is worth posting. Shit, it may even be worth its own thread. Lots of people beleive that a candidate doing well causes people to get complacent and not vote. This rus coyrary to evidence and is something I and others ha brought up for a while. Sam Wang from PEC adds to this.

Sam Wang said:
I’m getting mail claiming that when voters are sure their candidate will win, they are less likely to vote. Therefore (these are Democrats writing) I should pipe down. However, this speculation contradicts both human nature and empirical evidence.

First, think about why we vote. Since a single vote basically never swings a race, the rational argument for voting is not strong. Instead, we vote because it is our duty, because we build the habit over time, and because voting makes us feel good. In light of that, the obvious consequence of supporting a winner is increased likelihood of voting – there’s more emotional reward.

Now, some evidence. Consider this post of mine from 2008, The Exuberance of Likelier Voters.

statepoll08_outcome_fit.png

This graph shows outcomes plotted as a function of polling margins. If polls were accurate, the slope of the green line would be 1 with an intercept of 0. But it is not. Indeed, for every 1% of actual margin, only 0.84+/-0.03% is captured in polls*. This underperformance implies that there is a hidden bonus for whoever is ahead. The intercept essentially goes through the origin, so there’s no overall bias toward either candidate.

It seems that this phenomenon could be caused in three ways, not mutually exclusive:

If you live in a state where you are certain that your candidate will win, you are more likely to vote than predicted by likely-voter screens.
In the same state, if you support the losing candidate, you are less likely to vote than predicted by likely-voter screens.
Now, I should say that it’s not clear that this idea applies to a national race. But my point is that we don’t have evidence that confidence is a turnout-killer.

Finally, consider the converse. When Donald Trump claims that the election is “rigged,” that tells his supporters that he is doomed. Based on the state-level data above, this might depress turnout.

Georgia may flip to in this election depending on the amount hilary wins NC by.

Excited to be voting for the first time. Scared of the possible result.

Everyone please vote!
I always feel this is a strange thing to say. For Donald too, what if the ones your talking to vote the other way. I saw a friend that doesn't like Donald keep getting spam go out and vote messages from trump

Is this "billionaire" who doesn't pay taxes REALLY ragging on the establishment for catering to himself

It's not even the first time, he did it during the debates when he was questioned about not paying taxes for decades. He said the Clinton should have changed the laws when she was a senator, no shit.

My mom is absolutely terrified of Trump. She told me she voted for Kasich in order to block Trump from winning the Ohio primaries (wow!!) She keeps asking me who I think will win, as if I have the power to decide who wins. So to calm her nerves, I always emphatically say Hillary (except for that one time, lol)

She's so ready for this election to be over.

My parents were always Democrats.
Democrats' color is blue.
My car is blue.
PlayStation is represented by blue.
SSJB is badass.
I live on a blue planet
Blue is also my favorite color.

This can only mean one thing and one thing only.

I'm blue da ba ba dee da...

I plan to be a democrat for as long as they don't go crazy like the other lame parties.

I've been avoiding newsmedia like the plague since the comey letter when it re-became 24/7 "EMAILS EMAILS KILLARY!! KILLARY COLLAPSE! DONALD SEEMS NICE NOW LOL HORSERACE DEADHEAT", but I'll be glued to the actual election night coverage for sure. Don't bother turning it on until like 7pm though, because the afternoon will be pure fuckery with ~speculation~ and I remember how how bad we all got burned by the 2004 exit polls that led to 3 hours of "KERRY LANDSLIDE INCOMING"

Trump has been plastering Iowa with this fantastic two minute ad.

It must have played about 7 times during the Iowa-PSU game.

Probably my favorite political ad since the Simon and Garfunkel Bernie ad back during the primaries.

This is a very effective ad that I think showcases why so many are supporting Trump. It isn't so much the racism and xenophobia, it's getting America back on top with manufacturing despite how impossible and unrealistic that actually is.

I think that's a very comforting rationalization, but I don't think it's the truth.

It's the racism and xenophobia.

Going to vote Tuesday in MO.

Disappointed that the Mary Jane thing was never put to a vote. Would've loved to smoke some J to treat my autism (and I have medical proof of my autism)

Voting against that voter ID even though I know it will probably pass.

GO KILLARY

Took my mom early voting in Fairfield County, Ohio. No protesters but shockingly high number of young people and African Americans for our lily white county. Standing in line for over an hour did wonders for my anxiety disorder. Was sick to my stomach the rest of the day but it was totally worth it.

Come on Ohio, don't embarrass me for once.

That's pretty fascinating? Can you give us a rundown on how you changed your stance over the years?

CA ballot measure for death penalty ban is still failing according to polls. The ironic thing is the opposing ballot to SPEED UP death penalty cases is also failing.

So we as a state are OK with just wasting money cause we haven't actually executed anyone in like 10 years. Just throw money at nothing I guess.
