I really think people like this should go into LGBT gaf and take a look at the great people there who they are actively trying to fuck over with these kind of views.

But it should be up to the states!!! If you don't like your states laws just go to a different one!!

Maybe they are drawing too many parallels to the Brexit vote.

I am legitimately starting to worry here, never thought it would be this close, and I have always wondered how many people quietly support Trump without volunteering that information to pollsters, but Trump still has a lot of ground to gain before he can win.

This is what worries me too. Im woried pools are inaccurate and are not taking into account deplorables who ill come out in force to vote.

My ass. If Trump said climate change is real, there's a wage gap and institutional racism exists, he wouldn't have made it past the primary.

It's not just that he's a republican. It's that he's a racist, sexist, anti-intellectual asshole Republican.

To be fair, the primary voting population is not necessarily representative of the general electorate. The worst of the worst may have gotten him nominated, but the average Republican voter who just always votes Republican may take it on good faith that "he won the nomination, so he's the person I need to vote for." In the same way that the casual technology market may follow the path set by early adopters.

Granted, this logic requires remaining ignorant of every horrible thing Trump has said and done, so at best, they're stubbornly misinformed.

They're not misinformed, they just don't care.

What is the argument for the electoral college instead of a popular vote?

I remember reading about it a while ago but I just don't remember what it was.

Early voting in most states suggests the opposite actually - massive increase in Hispanic voting, more women voting then men, good African-American turnout (other than North Carolina, sort of, due to reduced polling places). Clinton also has a vastly superior get-out-to-vote system than Trump. This also might indicate a decent underestimation of Clinton's support, as polling has struggled to accurately capture Hispanics and early voting in Florida and Nevada (not sure about other states) have shown a lot of "unlikely" voters taking part.

Why are anyone worried? I think/predict Hilton winning in a huge landslide! Reagan-style! Even with the most moderate republican Hillary would have won!

I don't think that's possible in the USA, because you have to register before you vote.

I always forget that most states don't have election day registration. Wisconsin has had it since before I was born (enacted in 1975). Looking it up, only 11 states allow it.

Why are anyone worried? I think/predict Hilton winning in a huge landslide! Reagan-style! Even with the most moderate republican Hillary would have won!

I hope you're right, but when you live in one of the most conservative counties in America, Trumps momentum feels palpable.

I was going to say, I thought the indications from early voting were solidly in favor of Clinton. Why the sudden worry that it's "close"?

Last minute bed-wetting, "secret" Trump voters that I guess are all waiting for Election Day to show up. The only "secret" vote we've seen is the immense amount of Hispanics showing up and that's because most pollsters don't poll Spanish only speakers.

The small states and those with little population would be completely ignored. Just consider, there are more people in New York city then the entire states of Wyoming , Vermont, North Dakota, Alaska, South Dakota, Delaware, Montana, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, and Maine combined.

It's good for the people in the little states, but obviously means that individual votes count for less in the big states. Think of it like protecting the minority from the majority.

Man, every poll and report is making me more and more upset/nervous. And Kellyanne Conway was insufferable with Jake Tapper this morning on CNN's State of the Union. Jesus christ what a tone-deaf harpie.

If Trump loses, I hope I never have to see her on anything ever again. Otherwise, if some god of the cosmos out there is listening, please take me quietly in the night.

The inverse can be applied though, Texas, California, and New York are generally ignored in campaigns cause their votes are locked for their parties for the most part.

Ahh, well that makes sense. Thank you very much.

Hate to break it to you, but we're screwed no matter who wins. It'll be nice to know we have a decent person in office though as we go down in flames :)

the other secret vote are women married to Trump supporters voting silently for Hillary

the silent majority

Trump has been plastering Iowa with this fantastic two minute ad.

It must have played about 7 times during the Iowa-PSU game.

Probably my favorite political ad since the Simon and Garfunkel Bernie ad back during the primaries.

Ok I finally watched this ad. Not surprised that it is antisemitic garbage. You really think that that ad is fantastic!?

There are 4 people in that ad cast as villains. Clinton, George Soros, Janet Yellen, and Lloyd Blankfein. So we have Clinton a 3 Jewish people who represent the establishment and global interests.

This is straight up David Duke stuff! And Trump just gets to put it in a national ad and you have the gall to call it fantastic!? Fuck that.

Take Bernie Sanders' name out of your mouth.

Take solace in the fact that polls may be inaccurate in another way. Polls try to get likely voters when they get their sample, as such they tend to catch people who have voted before. But we have record latino turnout all across the U.S., and there was also record amounts of applications for citizenship and voter registration from latinos across the nation. This uptick of latino voters not well covered in the polls could easily turn the election more heavily in favor of Clinton.

Or, you know, most projections are right and it'll still be an electoral blowout.

Fucking seriously. So tired of people that don't give a shit about his policies, continue to throw his name out there. Stop it. You're not a Sanders supporter. At best you are an anti-establishment voter that preferred Sanders over Trump at the time.

CNN chasing those ratings. Anyone without a "DEAD HEAT" ratings agenda knows the truth.

The race is over and it's been over. Clinton has it with 300+ EV.

I guess Trump supporters for the most part are not new/unlikely voters. That is encouraging.

But recent polls have been good for Hillary.

Conway has probably already gotten an offer by both CNN and FOX to be a pundit on a future show if Trump loses.

I have a sinking feeling he'll win. Why?

The numbers are this close. How can the polls be this close? Donald Trump as the President of the United States? It is disgusting.

Neither of them have done anything to deserve my vote. As I stated, I am going to vote for president and I am going to vote for someone that I believe would do a good job as president. Neither of my major political candidates have done anything to deserve my vote and thus will not be receiving it. This logic that you HAVE to vote for a Democrat or Republican is how we end up in situations where the vast majority of Americans dislike both major party candidates but one will still win.
Since the person you are voting for surely won't be elected I guess you also don't care much about the SCOTUS nominations either. A candidate who is not elected can't nominate judges.

Dear GAF,

Any comprehensive guides for election night, as in what will be key battleground states and at what time to expect their results to come in (preferably in CEST for us Euro's)?

The problem with this is that state boundaries are pretty arbitrary in regards to 'minorities.' We could draw a circle around any 500,000 people and say 'this is the minority population that needs protection from the majority.' How come that privilege is extended to the people who happen to live in Wyoming, but not, say, Harlem?

Email Gate is over....again.

Comey released a new letter. They reviewed the new emails. No change in conclusions.

Of course. Hey Comey how about next time you review the evidence first before opening your mouth ( or writing foolish letters).

If, for every choice, people choose the "lesser" evil from short-term calculus instead of choosing the better solution in the long term, the better solution will not be possible in the long term because it is sacrificed over and over again. So nothing is gained. Instead, one would have only "prevented the greater evil".

For me, "the greater evil" are people who try to prevent a supposed "greater evil" because they make the mistake that allows "the greater evil" to arise.

What is the argument for the electoral college instead of a popular vote?

I remember reading about it a while ago but I just don't remember what it was.

This is more of a historical reason than a current one, but I'll note that when it was designed the states were much more loosely connected, since travel and communication were more difficult. People tended to identify more with their state than with the United States as a whole. So the idea was (among other things) to force it so that the president had to be elected with the support of a reasonably broad collection of states lest the largest states dominate entirely. It worked so well that four of the first five presidents were from Virginia.

So I always vote in person on election day cause I like the experience of it. It's always been a swift, painless process despite living in a busy, congested city.

My cousin is doing early voting today though, and he said the wait is 4 hours. 😨
