United States Election: Nov. 8, 2016 |OT| Hate Trumps Love

I'm so nervous about this election that just reading about New York going red made my heart skip a beat despite me knowing that that's bullshit.

I just can't deal with even the fantasy of these things coming true. Feels like this election is literally killing me.

We're not all in America, I have no idea what you're talking about when you say "everyone expected it to go red". It's 10:39am here, I'm at work just trying to keep updated so I can't exactly set up a fucking election battle station here.

They're states that were always going to go to Trump. In the US, voting for president happens based on the popular vote of each state, with states that are more populous getting more electoral votes. The one who gets at least 270 electoral votes wins. Because of this system, any state that goes exactly as one would expect is pretty much not changing anything, because the actual percentage of voters doesn't matter beyond who gets the plurality in a given state. What matters is who wins certain key states that have a chance of going either way

So, half of Kentucky's polls close at 6 pm, and the other half at 7pm?

The other half of the state is in the central time zone.

The way the populations work out it doesn't matter for statewide stuff, most of the population is in the eastern half of the state.

This was peak Vine. Nothing will ever compete.

Good accent mind you

I was in the cafeteria getting lunch and saw on CNN they showed Hillary losing against Trump in Indian by like 50 points. D:

I'm curious, do countries in the EU (and UK) cover the US election extensively throughout the day>?

In Germany a live show started on 16:45 EST and it will go on until 01:00 EST.
And then there is a second show on another public station. So no commercials at least. ;-)

They interview former ambassadors, famous people in Germany and some Americans who live in Germany. And in between some documentary clips. But only little time is spent on analyzing the numbers. So very different to CNN, that I watch online.

Eurogaf spent the day shitting up the thread playing experts on all things US so I imagine those being sarcastic are just throwing that back a little.

I'm being sarcastic and I'm not even from the US lmao
I know there's a lot at stake here, but getting worried about Trump taking states like New York just because some random guy on the internet said so is ridiculous.

OK, so here's a little bit of advice for folks watching Election returns for the first time.

* Votes are counted by precinct. Each precinct sends their entire count in when they are finished counting. This means that areas with a relatively small number of voters are always reported first. Sparsely-populated areas tend to go Republican.

Because they want their horse race so very badly.

No, it's because more precincts have reported, and this early in the night, they're reporting everything they get.
