I'd say this economic malaise of the lower and middle class began in the 1980s under President Reagan (worker wages, corrected for inflation, peaked in the late '70s under President Carter, I think) [President Carter was actually a great President, I have not the slightest clue why so many Americans abhor him so much]. That was the time globalisation and neoliberalism kicked into turbo mode and the American industry got destroyed. High paying, secure industry jobs went away, and you got low paying, insecure service jobs instead.

I've been first to the USA as a kid in the early 1990s. On one of the trips we've been to rural Pennsylvania. About 20 years later I've visited some of those places again. Some of the cities which were lovely and sprawling in the early '90s look like war zones now. Absolutely devastating.

Trump was the only candidate besides Bernie Sanders who acknowledged this problem and vowed to try to fix it. He wants to 'make America great again'. Hillary Clinton on the other hand stressed at every moment how unbelievably well off America was, how it allegedly improved so much in the last decades and how it didn't need any saving because it was great as it is. America is great, but only for a select few people in the top 5 percent. Everybody else suffers from declining quality of life, job insecurity, low pay, high health care premiums and so on.

I can totally understand why the people elected President Trump. With him you can at least hope.

I can understand what you are saying. It's a "flip over the table" vote.

But the guy who is flipping over the table has no coherence with how to re-arrange it. He has no articulated economic policy that will help the working class. He just bared his fangs at what was perceived to be the establishment, and that's enough I guess?

I see him as being just the opposite of what "change" voters want. He's going to enable big business and help the rich getting richer.

He isn't going to help the working class. He has no plan for the working class. He said things to dupe the working class.

Well when you have >45% (and growing) of a country wanting to leave the union, it complicates matters a little. A lot of people I know who voted to remain in the UK have changed their minds since the last referendum. And seeing as how one of the main points put to us by the "better together" campaign was the fact that an independent Scotland would have to leave the EU, it's not really fair, is it?

Less than two years later, the same people came to a majority vote to stay in the EU but look what happened. The fact is, at every single election, it doesn't really matter what we say, because we're so outnumbered by the English. We're stuck with a party that less than 15% of the country voted for. We're forced to leave the EU even though we didn't vote for that either.
If we had left the UK, we'd be able to try to negotiate our own terms to remain with the EU, rather than rely on the head of a party we didn't vote for to negotiate the terms of a brexit we didn't vote for.

And you could say that I'm using the word "if" a lot, but the fact of the matter is that more Scots voted to leave the UK than voted to leave the EU. How is that fair? How is that Democracy? That's not democracy. That's a farce. Like I said, we never voted for it. England and Wales did. We just happened to get the shitty end of the stick, like always.

Now, with all that said, I am aware that there are people in England and Wales who voted to remain, just like there are people in Scotland and Northern Ireland who voted for Brexit, but it's pretty disingenuous to play the "we're all in this together" when dishing out the blame.
