This feels a bit more definitive than 2000, though.

Personally I hope Donna Brazile is sent home packing.The whole DNC committee should resign. I supported the Democrats but the DNC is corrupt and failed big time.

That's not the reason HRC lost, everyone knows that, although moral elitism doesn't help.

The reason Hillary lost is because she was a terrible candidate for a changing political/electoral landscape. Extremely low voter turnout proves this. Dems lost touch and lost the election, Trump didn't win it.
 
America has had Republican governments before with questionable social policies but what is most affecting to me in the immediate sense is that Trump's victory serves as validation of his character and behaviour. That this is an ideal to strive towards, this is what it takes to be president. But maybe I'm placing too much value on the propriety of political leaders.

just look at all the reports of rnc officials abandoning trump when it looked like he was going to lose.

Apparently, Trump isn't the most unlikable. Hilary was never a perfect candidate. Nor was Bernie. Democratic Party is far from perfect. But what won this is voter turnout for a candidate that has had the most socially conservative agenda in a while. They were that silent majority who in this day and age would not admit it who they wanted. What won the election is that there is still a silent agenda in the heart of this country and Trump was the one to finally reawaken it. I'm rather afraid of what this does to future years of voting. The power is in the hands of the majority and they now remember it. Unless democratic voters were simply not paying attention and turnout is better next term, this could be a real issue.

Time to stop putting all the blame on Hillary and remember the other factors in this.

As someone who has voted democrat for the last 12 years I hope that both the DNC and us left-leaning souls learn from this. We need to start being what we claim to represent.

If Hillary had won by ECV then Trump wouldn't have won by the popular vote.

The Electoral College system itself isn't really a problem. The issue is the "winner take all" rules that 48 states abide by. There is nothing stopping any of these states from changing this policy.

A while back, a friend of mine was talking about how every fallen civilisation fell during/immediately after its 'golden age', its age of bounteous freedom and excess.

I honestly didn't believe it would or could happen, but we just put a social and political stick of dynamite at the wheel of one of the world's most powerful countries. Mixed with climate change acceleration, and... yeesh

Shit might just be utterly fucked.

The funny part to me is despite Trump winning he was the one who criticized the popular vote not mattering even though he's clearly not getting it.
 
I think the most terrifying thing trump can do is too undermine the NATO alliance. Stability and safety are key points in terms of making strong European economies, and if NATO becomes undermined or worse broken, a resurgent Russia could throw that entire region into disarray.

An invasion of the Balkans is looking less like conspiracy bullshit now...

I am amazed that anyone can be so unaware of the world. This is not America bashing, anyone calling their place in the international community "noble" has seriously lost touch with reality. It is the same type of echo chamber, just in a nationalist sentiment way, that made gaffers and many media outlets believe a Clinton win was certain.

It can be frustrating, sure.

Think of it as 51 little elections and it kind of makes it seem a little less crazy. Or maybe not.
 
I don't know what to say. Obviously Clinton was not a great candidate either but I think the worst outcomes from her presidency wouldn't begin to touch his. If we get out without either WWIII or a violent revolution and a gutted constitution then hopefully we'll have more moderate choices on both sides in 2020. Not holding my breath tho. I'm not sure America realizes what's it done until its too late.
