The left has a LOT of attitude adjustment to do over the next 4 years. Some of the reactions I've seen are downright shocking.

With the smugness and a whole year of belittling and insulting Trump supporters and dismissing them as a pocket of racist sexists, its honestly no surprise this result snuck up on so many. The DNC themselves straight up labeling everyone "deplorables" was a tremendously stupid decision. Hillary Clinton was not a popular enough candidate to get away with that sort of cockiness.

I would NEVER claim a large portion of Trump's base were these shitty people, but it's probably time the people who voted for this got taken seriously, lest this happens all over again in 4 years time. Trump did not win simply because all his supporters are racist, nor did DNC lose because Hillary is a woman.

The left has for a while been pushing further left as a response to the right going off it's deep end, rather than heading a bit more central to try and pickup voters feeling stuck in the middle. A response to crazy on one side isn't to go crazy to the other side.

I seriously hope the level of engagement the next few years from the left isn't to double down on name calling, clickbait headlines and all out negative vibes and raging and telling people to fuck themselves. It's literally polluting your own waters.

People don't like it when the left is criticised, but I'd wage they are largely the same people who went absolutely fucking postal when anyone criticised Hillary. Continue to veer further down this path at your peril for 4 years time.

Me? Central but left leaning. I'm not American though so don't really label myself as right or left in everyday life. Probably more liberal or social.

It feels weird having to talk about the dangers of a Trump presidency in hushed whispers in my office. Both myself and the person sitting next to me have bosses who are Trump supporters and giddy as fuck this morning.

Apparently Clinton's indiscretions outweigh racism and sexism.
Yeah that is an uncomfortable environment

Thinking more about it this morning, bush was one of the worst presidents we have ever had. I actually don't think trump will be that bad, if for no other reason than he won't get us into any wars.

Not sure why you would assume that. Trump does nothing but get into unnecessary fights, and now he has nukes, drones and the world's largest military to command.

When Mexico doesn't pay for the wall, why wouldn't Trump use military force against them?

Excellent post. It's amazing how so many of you were rational yesterday and then it changed today. Keep passing off the people who elected Trump as "racists," and you'll be in the same spot again in four years.

No. Because it'sg disgusting how beyond supporters are put in drives today spanking it like this it a victory.

Bernie Sanders almost four million less votes. Four million.

In no universe is that close. So this attitude is "lol you idiots choose wrong" is quite frankly, insulting.
Victory? This is literally a doomsday scenario. I feel like a zombie today. As a Bernie supporter I find zero solace in Hillary losing. I needed Hillary to win at all costs.

That's nonsense. The American "left" as personified by Hillary is centrist by the standards of any other democracy.

Yeah my best friend is having a rough time trying to console her trans partner. I feel awful.

Same. I have two transgender friends and one has been talking about how extra suicidal she is since last night. And it isn't just her wanting attention. She's seriously unstable and has been for a while but this election result has me very worried for her.

I am fucking seething at the electoral college right now. That shit has to go. If she lost the popular vote I would be fine with her losing the electoral college itself. This is the second time this system has jobbed the Democrats. What a joke. This is literally not the will of the people at work here.

How is winning the popular vote gonna help the dems?

It shows that even a failure of a candidate from the democrats could get more overall votes than Trump, just not the right votes.

With a few years of licking their wounds, the democrats can tweak their messaging, nominate a good candidate and hopefully get Trump out in 4 years, before he can mess things up too bad.

At least in 2000 it was more understandable. HIllary barely lost a whole bunch of states and got fucked in the Electoral College

I can't imagine. Trans rights are going to take a back seat for a long time now. I'm a cis white male and I just spent the night crying. I have no idea how I'd cope if I was LGBTQ.

Cmon man. I'm dating a trans girl and my mom is a lesbian and we all live in Texas and none of us were that shook.

He'll leave our allies high and dry and make them pay ransom for any help. This isolationist policy will embolden rogue actors around the world because we don't have an alliance with anyone to help us out because they didn't pay up. This is the stupidest "strategy" ever. Everything to Trump is about money...this will end badly for every entitlement program ever as someone else said. This will no longer be the USA as we've known it since FDR. The wars will be fought on the USA...kick people off healthcare, social security, medicare or even cut that shit at all and there will be riots in the streets.

How you haven't thought this through that you believe Trump is some sort of peace candidate is beyond me...it's completely the opposite. You can't dodge this draft...it will be happening in your back yard. With 300 million guns and plenty more for sale....people inept to the facts and a worthless media...this country is in serious jeopardy.

First 9 threads all about The Election.

Who Won?

This forum has been drowning in Trump threads for over a year.

Now it's gonna get fucking crushed by them.

You know, that should've been a sign, when even Hillary supporters are more interested in Trump than Hillary herself.

Am I wrong to assume that most (not all) Trump supporters are bigots in some way? I just don't see how anyone could support this man on moral grounds.

but in another country, she would have won even by just 0.1%, regardless, it doesn't matter anymore, time for America to get its act together

But still the majority of voters wanted Clinton to become the president. Even if it's 1 vote that swings it, it should count in the election.

Ultimately, it probably would, but it would also trigger an automatic recount, not to mention Trump's "rigged" narrative. It would be hell.

Liberal politicians around the world quickly need to come up with a message that resonates with the victims of globalisation. Both Trump and the Brexit brigade were able to fuse nostalgia, xenophobia and jingoism in a way that excited people who felt left behind by the modern world and yearned for the "glory days".

We are seeing former industrial heartlands in the UK and US turning to extreme-right candidates because they don't feel like anyone else gives a shit about them. Of course they are deluding themselves but it's damning that nobody has found an argument that works against it. What can candidates like Hillary Clinton say to people who have seen their livelihoods destroyed by the demise of traditional domestic industry? How can she appeal to those who are irritated by social progressivism? Just what can she offer them that will improve their lives? All she could do was call these people deplorable and say their jobs were never coming back, but the truth hurts, and people aren't going to vote for someone that hurls sand in their eyes and tells them to get with the times.

Still numb to this whole thing. Numb and hungover.

This hurts 100x more than Bush's re-election mostly because of how out in the open the candidate really hates minorities.
