There are too many variables to know for sure. You can't just plug in one person for another and expect to know the result. This was a long, strenuous, toxic campaign for both sides. We will never really know how Bernie would have fared.
Exactly. He could have done better, or worse. It's impossible to tell and a moot discussion at this point.
It's hard to imagine how he could have done worse
It's pretty easy to imagine any one of his numerous flaws being brought up, causing him great harm.

Colorado voted 80%-20% against singlepayer. It's impossible to know what impact that would've had, but keep that in mind.

Thanks DNC and DWS
Bernie lost because he lost. The election is done, get over it.

Same thing my girlfriend said last night when I explained how the electoral college works. She was completely baffled, largely because she's been under the impression her entire life that the US is an actual democracy.

everybody in my government class went through the same thing when we learned about the electoral college

we will never see change, not while it benefits The Powers That Be

No country is an "actual democracy". They're all representative democracies, where people elect leaders. Different countries have different ways of doing things, but that doesn't make one more or less democratic. Not that I like the electoral college, it had its problems, see this election. But it doesn't make it any less of a democracy.

With that illusion maybe we can run Hillary again in 2020 and lose again!
What illusion? He lost by millions of votes, they'res no way around that, and certainly not something a better debate schedule and two questions would change. If he wanted to win, he needed to appeal to minorities and the south more. He didn't, so he lost, it's that simple.

Hillary isn't running again. She knows that, the DNC knows that. I'm not entirely sure what you're arguing.

I've been hearing people say that since Bush/Gore but we won't do jack shit about it.

America is not a true Democracy, it has been known for decades.

America is a republic. It has been known from 1776.

I hope the Democratic party responds differently than the neogaf bubble.

1. We knew the rules of the EC game and didn't say shit when it looked like it favored us pre-election.

The EC outrage is a waste of time. The three ways to change the EC are:
a. Constitutional amendment
b. Proportional voting for all states (who is gonna go first and fuck their party?)
c. Interstate compact between states controlling atleast 270 EC to go with the popular vote

2. The anger at the racists that voted for trump. Are you serious? The GOP turned out the same base it always does. The racists that voted for trump are the same ones that ate up karl roves dog whistle. We didn't lose because of the racist, we lost because our rust belt base stayed home and destroyed the firewall.

Clinton made 0 trips to WI, lost by 20k votes and had 270K obama voters MIA. Instead of course correcting our message to include then and bring our firewall back in the fold, lets just call them all racists. They didn't vote for Trump, they just stayed home because we didn't have a message for them. No more racist than Colin Kaepernick.

America is a democracy, which kind of is the problem.

So my grandmother, very sweet lady, 88 years old, strong Catholic belief, white, grew up when racism was "normal", Canadian mind you. Very invested in this election, very invested Always tried to watch and keep up however she is old and comprehension is slowly losing its grip on her. So i tell her what is going on but she never gave me her opinion on who she wanted to win.

Today I came by and she is jolly as ever could be and by chance asks who won the election. I sigh and tell her trump. Now a very Canadian Liberal woman, catholic who as god as my witness never committed a sin in her life nor swear and I quote says "those stupid mother fuckers, what have they done they fucked it up"

Then she grabs her chest and falls on the floor. In the hospital we found out she had a slight heart attack, one that probably could have killed her at her age however she is recovery well.

So congratulations you almost killed grandma, as well as your country.

So Hillary Clinton gets the majority of individual votes (popular vote) but Trump ends up winning it all. That doesn't sound like democracy to me, the Electoral College system is flawed.

Oh please, if the situation would be reversed you'd be 100% fine with it.

Well I guess experience is counted negatively in Americans politics because that's "establishment". Then I guess Joe Biden and Bernie will both fail too since they've both been career politicians. Seems like some people just want to see the world burn and would rather elect a total disaster into that White House because he's not "establishment."

Not really true at all, nor is the "americans are all sexist" line democrats are using to justify their loss.

Tammy Duckworth became a new senator in Illinois, defeating the incumbent republican senator. She is a military vet who lost both legs and has served as a congresswoman for 3 years.
Ilhan Omar from Minnesota became the first Somali American Muslim woman elected to congress.
Kate Brown became the first openly lesbian governor, she's served a lifetime in politics.
Kamala Harris from California is the first Indian woman elected to the US senate and the second black woman ever elected to that place. She has been in politics for decades in California.
Catherine Cortez Masto from Nevada is the first Latina woman elected to the Senate. She also has been in politics (Attorney General, etc) for a long time.
Pramila Jayapal from Washington is the first Indian woman elected to congress. Also decades long politician.

Good candidates can win. Bad ones lose.

Why do people think Bernie would have beaten Trump? Bernie would have been dragged through the mud as a dirty Socialist for months then would have gotten trounced in the GE. People underestimate how much the older generations despise socialism without knowing anything about it.

Bernie had more excitement, similar policies to Hillary (More Hillary supporters would back Bernie as the nominee then the other way around), record breaking donations to his campaign, did well in states that Hillary lost, motivated the youth to get out and vote, and comparably little baggage compared to HRC. Yeah Donald could have attacked him for being a socialist, but people this election wanted an outsider and while I know Sanders was a politician for many years, his history as an independent probably would have appealed more to moderates and undecided votes.

No one can say for sure if he'd have won, but I do think in all honesty he would have. All we do know for sure is that Hillary couldn't cut it.

edit:

He lost due to Hillary's name recognition and the DNC having committed to having Hillarly as their nominee from the start. Yeah HRC got more votes, but she wasn't going to get all of the people who supported Bernie in the primaries after the way the DNC and DWS handled things. This concept that she was a stronger candidate because she got more votes doesn't hold up.

And yeah, what good winning those southern states in the primaries did for Hillary when they were all but guaranteed to roll red in the general (eyeroll).

My mom went grocery shopping today

Live in Corona, Queens, so being Pakis, she went to Desis R' Us that is Jackson Heights
My mom said the mood was depression on almost everybody's face

She then stopped by our local grocery store by our house, same depressed look
Corona is Little Central America here, everyone's shook

Mom was like damn somber mood everywhere I went, usually people are cheerful and greet/chat
Today just felt like someone close passed away and mourning taking place

So yeah around Queens, mood is no good

Hope Thanksgiving and Black Friday Bonanza gets some people out of the rut
Life moves on I guess, but 4 years of buffoonery to follow will be rough
Guessing John Oliver, Bill Maher, Vice and SNL will get me through it

I voted Clinton, but my country fucked up.

I'm sorry, mate. For what it's worth. I'm glad your Grandma's alive. She aight.

Its a popularity contest first and foremost. Hillary had been smeared for decades at this point AND she was essentially a cold, emotionless robot.

Trump supporters irl are insufferable right now, and I'm in fucking Australia.

they're going to continue the wave and try and run pauline hanson for PM

hopefully she won't win but if she does, join your local antifa movement today because shits gonna get real bad for non-whites in australia

besides all the awfulness of having this moron as president I am so not looking forward to going through this cycle again when he's campaigning for re-election 4 years from now. everything truly does suck.

He'll actually be too old to run for a second term. That's the only good thing that can come out of it.

oh she would never blame the people voting for Hilary obviously it more has to do with the white supremacists that think it's ok for someone to be head office who is racist, mocks the disabled, calls a group of people racists and thinks brexit is a breakfast cereal. But thank you for your kind words.

Sweet jesus I just read an ABC news piece saying Sheriff Joe Arpaio could be secretary of Homeland Security. Just... no... mother of god no.

according to lots of people it's all the same though, trump and hillary are both bad choices, it's just bad either way

Rust Belt will eventually learn that their jobs aren't in China, they're in robots. Trump isn't going to pass a law that forces companies that want to sell in the US to produce here and also only hire humans. If anything, he'll encourage them to maximize efficiency and profit.

They should have started retraining 10 years ago, but they didn't want to do that, and neither Bush nor Obama wanted to make them. Now they're willing to burn it all down if there's an even 1% chance things will get fixed.

I just read this monster's Wikipedia page

Jesus....this country is even more fucked if they gave him that kind of power

I'm going to pray some of these articles coming out are just fucking with us. I mean I'm terrified of the usual republican wackos, but Sheriff Joe, Rudy Gilliani, and Sarah Palin? Goddamn

As an outsider observer of this clusterfuck, my gut told me two things during the run up to the election;

a) America is going to vote in Trump, continuing their history of bizarre voting choices because durrrr celebrity
b) Whomever wins is going to be a one term president

Fingers crossed Trump is gone after one term. Given that he's already got his team describing the wall as 'a metaphor' and the entire world is looking on in despair, I think it's probably a safe bet.

Slow clap to the 6 million missing Dem/Obama voters who couldn't be bothered to go out and vote despite the threat of this lunacy, by the way.

Cut to us looking depressed in 2023 after Trump has announced his intention to run for a now legalized 3rd term.

The guy who said the election was rigged won the presidency with the second-most votes

Yep! Even harped on how the DNC stole the election from Bernie because of Delegates.

People have the memory of... something very small with no significant long term memory.

This is one reason I have empathy for some of these people though. They are defeated by the changing landscape. They're broke, drug use is rampant, their families are broken, and all they knew has been taken away from them. I know it sucks, I'm not saying it's the right choice, but a lot of these people are throwing a hail mary since nothing else has worked for them.

Is Trump going to be the most disliked President ever, or has there been worse?

yes, most unfavorable president coming into office. same would be true of clinton.

he's also the oldest

and the first ever of having no political or military experience beforehand

Will Trump care about his approval numbers? That's my only hope at this point.

you mean the corrupt media's fake polls?

You know what I hate so much about this?

It's not that more people chose Trump. GOP wasn't supposed to be able to win if Obama 2012 numbers kept happening.

I guess people don't feel like voting to stop someone in power, only to put something in. Status Quo is boring af I guess.

I still can't believe this is reality.

Best case, you hope this makes people realise the value of getting out and voting.

My dad had to pull out my 11 year old sister from school today because of a headache, she wouldn't stop worrying about how Trump was going to send us back to Mexico. My parents are immigrants but my sister is a US born citizen.
