Buying a 4K TV for PS4K thread!

Slickdeals fell through for me =[

What is it that you need? I might be able to help out.

Literally did the exact same thing. Literally every step.

I called Discover and she claimed that if I went through the Discover Deals link I'd have nothing to worry about but I'm still going to call again once the charge posts just to confirm.

haha, I was like ughhhhh Samsung is gonna tell me it's too late to cancel and 10% on almost $1200 after tax is no joke! And by the time I get my CC unblocked the deal will be over! In any event, the Discover CSR actually told me no - there is no way to confirm which surprised me. He just reiterated that I went through their website for the second order, to which I affirmed, and he said I should see something in a couple months.

wtf!?

My charge is still pending but that's a good idea. Once it's gone through I figure it's worth another inquiry.

Okay, holy shit, I can't believe this worked.

I used to have a PerkSpot account from way back in the day when I worked at Starbucks. For shits and giggles, I gave it a try. I entered my old account info and it let me login. I entered the Samsung portal and there it was: The 55" KS8000 for just $725.

Holy shit. I got it. I had to get it. I'm gonna be late on rent this month because of it but I couldn't pass up the chance. Just in case something changed. I have to keep using PerkSpot for everything. And I don't even have to work at fucking Starbucks anymore!

Nice haul.

Do I remember hearing there's a difference bt 60in and 55in of the ks8000?

Edit: and I don't understand why some peoples epp links (including mine) say for employees only and some peoples don't.

mine doesn't work anymore either, even though it did last week. Damn i should just ordered it last week.

Got my uncle to unbox and turn my KS8000 before I pick it up. No light bleed strips or corners, no damage to screen, no unusual clouding. Cannot believe what a deal. No joke, unless you see a pricing error that is honored, a brand firesale like the HP Touchpad, you won't see EPP pricing on flagships on such a large scale again. Literally hundreds if not over thousands got in on this deal. $1079 for a 65". $729 for the 55" etc.

PS4 pro and 55 in hisense h8c bought tonight. Hooking it all up once my gf goes to sleep. Thanks again brethren.

Take some pictures and let us know what you think. I've seen it in person but never got to really evaluate it fully.

Here's some great free basic calibration tools.

http://www.avsforum.com/forum/139-display-calibration/948496-avs-hd-709-blu-ray-mp4-calibration.html

anyone care to help on either questions?

Apparently it uses a Sharp panel which differs slightly from the 55" and 65" FA01 or AA02 panels.

From what I'm seeing on the AVSforums there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of difference between them. Not much of a panel lottery this time (Thank you for that Samsung! It's practically a hallmark of their TV's in recent years. There were some models that only certain panels had the ability to do 4:4:4 chroma at 4k last year in their mid range.)

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

So what exactly happened with the Perks at work stuff for many anyways? I got my TV and everything, but it seems like I no longer have access to the Samsung Site on that account. It just tells me the offer is no longer valid.

What's a perkspot?

Hmm, my wife might be able to use this method.

Edit: No luck, damn.

If anybody can help out with access to EPP through employee, or perskspot, It would be much appreciated! I have the Discover 10% off, and the KS8000 for $700ish is bonkers. Halp!

What is it that you need? I might be able to help out.
I believe I'dneed access to someone's EPP account or someone to place an order for the 65KS8000 for me. I am not 100% positive on that though.

I sent a few more PMs to people on slickdeals, so I'm hoping to see some responses tomorrow morning.

All you lucky folks....I envy you...but but please help lol.

I've tried but nothing yet, might just drop it.

What is the issue with the KS8000 60"? What is the difference in the panel? I was about to buy this model but maybe I should just get the 65"? I have the screenshot of the EPP price so I could get my Discover card to price match.

60" panel is made by Sharp. The 55" & 65" panels are made by either AOU or Samsung. Rtings.com tested these 3 panels out on the 6000 series Samsung and there were some minor differences between them. I believe the AOU one was considered the better of the 3, followed by the Sharp panel and then the Samsung. But like I said, those tests were done on the 6000 not the 8000, so who knows which panel is the best and the differences aren't going to be significant so I wouldn't worry about it. No matter which panel you get there will be a chance for light bleeding, dead pixels, clouding issues and they will all have poor viewing angles since they're VA.

so whats the general best brands for 4K gaming? Sony/Samsung/Toshiba/LG?

this thread is so overwhelming!

I've had good success with gaming on LG TV's from my experience. My current 1080p TV is an LG. I had a Samsung TV some years back when I was shopping around and it was nice but the blur from games in dark scenes was too much so I had to return. The new Samsung sets seem to be good in terms of motion blur and input lag though so would def give them a try again.

Never owned a Sony but wouldn't mind one of their sets. Love the designs.

Okay so I'm looking to invest next week in a decent 4k TV when some longevity. But can someone explain what is meant by the terms PANEL and OLED?

What kind of panel should I be concerned about and what is meant when people say something isn't true or real HDR?

Thanks in advance for any patience answering my noon questions.

I posted this in KS8000 thread as well but this might be the better group to ask...

Is there any difference in the quality of panel used between the 60KS8000 and the 65KS8000? I know that is an issue with the Vizio M-Series 4K sets. I keep flip-flopping back and forth between the 60" and 65" KS8000, I've had a 60" 1080p Vizio for the past few years and I'm worried the jump to 4K and HDR won't feel as significant if I don't step up the screen size as well.

If anyone with a working EPP account would please let me use theirs I would appreciate it much. Like make my holiday season much.

Sony because Sony, Samsung because they are great and cheaper than Sony, and LG because OLED.

Speaking of OLED, my new 55 LG C6 (curved + 3D) arrived ($1499 deal) and holy shit - Destiny looks like a whole new game! It's super crisp and just...I could not be any happier!

Not entirely TV-related, but I am in need of a home theater receiver that will let me connect to my OLED through HDMI, allowing other HDMI-connected devices (either directly to the TV itself or through the receiver) to pass through the audio for proper surround sound.

I'm told this receiver will do the trick: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00YAO43YG/?tag=neogaf0e-20

But what's the difference between that one and this slightly cheaper receiver? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00J30GXW2/?tag=neogaf0e-20

And am I going to need a compliant HDMI cable to connect the receiver to the TV? What type of HDMI cable will I need again, just for reference?

Please help me choose something, thanks.

Yes. The 60" has a Sharp panel, which is not as good. Go for the 65" if you can.

Keep in mind the one you selected only has 3 HDMI inputs that support the current standards.

I wouldn't necessarily need more, since the only 4K devices I would have are the PS4 Pro and the Xbox One S. The TV has four HDMI inputs, so the receiver would likely just carry the leftover 1080p devices (like the Wii U, PS TV, Apple TV, etc).

But does the Sony receiver actually have 4 HDMI inputs that are all 4K compliant? If so, that extra port plus the cheaper price may cause me to get that one. But I really want to know what the difference between the two is.

Man what kind of raggedy ass shipping service is Samsung using here? When I go to the AGS site it shows me tracking for an order that took place in 2009. Maybe because they're reusing a tracking number? Idk. And the website...my god. The authorization charge also dropped from my card. When will it reappear?

So, I bit the bullet early and opted for the $999 55' KS8000. I'm aware the Pro comes with the necessary HDMI cable, but is there anything else I would need? I do have a sound bar I've been using for my current Plasma Panasonic HDTV, I'm guessing it will be compatible with the KS8000, too?

Also, forgive the ad nausea requests as far as what TV settings I should use (as I'm sure it's been asked/answered 100-some times), but how should I calibrate this TV?

Don't see why the sound bar wouldn't work.

Well it finally came yesterday.

Got the 65ks8000 with the epp.

I'm Canadian.

Which means I had it shipped to a mail forwarding address in the USA and then off to me in canada.

I was so worried with all the handling and stuff it went through that it would come damaged but I unboxed it yesterday and it's perfect.

All in all it cost me $2050 but considering this TV retails for 4000 here and goes on sale for 3299.99 I think I still did pretty amazing.

Phew.

I received my LG 55E6 yesterday and I'm boggled at trying to get the settings right. What are folks using for black level with PS4 Pro and Xbox One S?

I'm also not totally sure what the motion processing settings do.

Black levels depend on what you have your gamma set at. With the gamma I have the TV set to I calibrated out at brightness of 51 for standard content. HDR is a little different and varies depending on content. For standard content start in one of the two ISF modes then pick your gamma, set your contrast, and then your brightness. If you have calibration equipment it helps.

Good info here: http://www.avsforum.com/forum/40-oled-technology-flat-panels-general/

Use this for the near black levels. (IRE 5 adjustments)

I don't get this. My company just set us up with "perks@work" I go to Samsung and just see the tv there for 1499.. Anyone know?

I used this video:

https://youtu.be/l4cpwUj-UP8

Still want to tinker with things to my preference. I'm trying to get used to not having the TV super bright that it obscures the image, but I'd still ideally want something that pops more.

HDR content looks great, haven't tried enough 1080p content to see how that goes, and I don't like how cable TV looks (at least on Cartoon Network).

So what your saying is it time to go harass some Starbucks employees to use there PerkSpot account but in all seriousness congrats that's awesome

Your eyes are biased by what you're used to, so it should be possible to adjust. People get hung up on that sort of thing with "grey whites" for plasma displays, super bright whites (that look blue to me) on LCD, etc. A lot of people have an adjustment to a properly calibrated display, but I think it's best to get comfortable with a properly calibrated state, THEN tweak to preference later. You need to set a new baseline for yourself that's not so extreme.

Not the right thread, and I'd rather not create a new thread, but does anyone know of any decent streaming services in the UK (aside from Amazon and Netflix) that offer 4K content? I'm using a Samsung UE40KU6000.

This is slightly off-topic, but one of the biggest pains with getting new equipment is finding the right spot on my shelf where the device's power cord can reach one of my outlets. It doesn't help that I also have a bunch of extension cords, surge protectors, and other leftover crap.

So I was wondering if there were any really good extension cords or surge protectors with LOTS of A/C outlets that I could just plug to one wall. Just one source with a whole punch of ports on it that are also verified safe so as not to short curcuit or something.

Sorry, I'm stalking the thread not you specifically. :-)

I use this, which solves a number of issues (brownouts, the cord length issue, number of outlets).

Linky

There is another model that's a bit cheaper, but I'm unclear on the specific differences.

That's a neat and tidy solution, but that price range is well past what I was hoping to pay.

Might be worth considering down the road, but for now I guess I'll stick with the nightmare of extensions and splitters taking up the dark corners of my room.

I bought the Hisense 55inch H8C. It's an entry level 4k TV, but I'm quite happy with it so far. Great picture quality and rtings had a solid review of it.
