Pokémon Sun & Moon |OT| Ultra Beasts and where to find them

So the general consensus is that this game is tedious, slow, the new pokemon are outclassed by previous gens...

So should I bother opening this or just return it...

Pokemon is easy tho.

Pokemon has always done a bad job communicating the separation between main game and battle facility. I wonder if Gamefreak assumes that at this point that the community is so huge that they don't need to tell any of this shit in-game, whoever is interested will research. Vague hints aren't really the best way of communicating deep mechanics lol.

How is a newcomer kid who is all hooked with the game and excited about finishing beating the Pokemon League going to feel about having his beloved in game team getting shit on by a Stallrein or other crazy strategy at Battle Tree? There's something missing there for people who want to get into it.

The awful way that Zygarde's extra moves and formes were shoved into this game suggests to me that they'd planned on a Pokemon Z and then shelved it for some reason.

The choice was between making a fixed 3rd version of XY or make a new gen for pokemons 20th anniversary. They went with the latter.

Who's saying that? I'm having a great time compared to XY honestly.

Can I buy the yellow shirt with Alolan Eggxecutor on it? Or is that a sweet NPC exclusive?

Also does more clothing unlock after you beat the game? I haven't gone back to check yet.

I know you can get a team skull tank, but that's all I saw

Looks like you can buy the shirt!

I could be misremembering, but I'm pretty sure I started with that shirt. Just went to the changing room and was already in my clothing choices. Chose female protagonist by the way.

This has been bothering me since Platinum: Why are Pokemon forms spelled with an e? Why are they called "Formes"? Is there any reason at all?

This is not the general consensus at all.

Forgive me if this has been covered already, but... do Pikachu spawn normally, or are they only called by other Pokémon in battle (and how does that even work?!). Pokédex says they spawn in Route 1 and Hau'oli City but I haven't seen one ever, only a couple of Pichus.

Thanks!!

quick question: is exp-sharing still in and does it still break the game, difficulty-wise?

The game feels like it's balanced with EXP Share in mind, but at the same time, it's super easy to get distracted and overlevel. But the NPCs catch up eventually in levels.

If you read through the last few pages is constant complaints about major, not minor, things.

I can whine all day about how much of a tease Alolan Marowak is with its awesome design, but god awful disgusting move pool and the tedium of getting a Thick Club to even make it viable, but that doesn't mean I hate the game. Just a small issue that ultimately doesn't change the fact I'm having tons of fun.

I think they're SOS exclusive.

yeah it's still in. some are keeping it on and some are keeping it off from what I've read. I've kept it on and some battles have still managed to knock me on my ass a few times.

I posted this earlier so forgive me as I'm not trying to be annoying, but is there a trade thread? Or is this where I'm I need to beg for an Alolan Vulpix?

Can I ask where you're getting that because this thread has been super positive, and I like it more than X/Y so far.

I don't know where you're seeing this consensus, because this is the best Pokemon gen in years for me. Maybe even my favorite since Gen 2. I'm in love with this game. Most of the buzz I've seen here and on Twitter shares that sentiment.

To have a balanced experience with Exp Share on you have to constantly rotate out your team and focus on filling out the dex as you move along.

This is not the general consensus at all.

Normal pokemon have forms. Sub-Legendaries , Legendaries and Mythicals have formes. Why I don't know because it makes it read like Xtreme Cool Letterz would be my guess.

Man, some of the reviews saying they finished the game in 17-20 hours have me completely perplexed. I'm 18 hours in, and I just finished the second island. I'm not even really trying to drag my feet. Hoping this is a long one for me!

If you just go through the last page alone there are some complaints about the new pokemon being outclassed, etc. Maybe general consensus is too broad but the complaints I am reading are very concerning to me and what I enjoy about these games.

That's probably why it feels balanced more or less for me. I usually get bored of having the same Pokemon in the front and rotate them around. There was a good few hours when my starter never even left its Pokeball as Mudsdale and A Marowak were plowing through everything. While just before that I mostly using Decidueye and Wishiwashi (mostly because the Water/Fire/Grass/Rock challenges were covered nicely by those two)

Now I'll probably start using Zygarde in the front, since he's new, underleveled, and I'm bored of leading with Marowak.

Decidueye
Zygardoggo
Wishiwashi
Marowak
Mudsdale
Snorlax

The Ice portion of the game is going to be rough. Marowak is useless for killing Ice types. If Mudsdale can survive a hit, he can sweep Ice Pokemon with no issue (Heavy Slam), he just needs to live.

Also this is probably my final team unless something absolutely unskippable comes up and I can dump Snorlax who hasn't battled since the first island. Might be Bewear that does it.

Most of that is meta shit tho.

If you don't give a fuck about IVs and EVs and play through it like a dirty dirty casual, like myself, with a party of 6 Grubbin than you'll have a blast.

That's par for the course in ANY OT. People typically don't come into these threads when they're in love with the game. What prompts people to post is when they need to vent about a minor annoyance, or when they want to seek answers for questions they have. The folks who are fully and completely in-love with the game are too busy playing the game to be posting. This is far-and-away one of the more positive OTs I've seen this year.

It's a great game, dude. Just play it and form your own decisions rather then trying to find a consensus through one single message board thread, that is still mostly really positive. The reviews, the word of mouth on here and Twitter, it's all been very positive. Either give it a chance or just return it, it honestly sounds like you're looking to give yourself a reason to return it for whatever reason.

I replayed the first 3 hours last night. Only confirmed what I thought the first time through - the opening of this game is god-awful. At least the pre-title cutscene made sense this time around, but I cannot stand the constant interruptions. Having replayed the first couple hours of X as well, I infinitely prefer XY, I really do. I went back to check this because I ended up enjoying the end of Sun/Moon and wanted to go back and see if I had just been in a bad mood or something at the start of it. Nope. I don't like it. Like playing FF13 for preschoolers but without the pretty visuals.

I will say, however, that being able to play during the in-game daytime really alleviated some of my problems with early game pokemon diversity. When I played at night it felt like I was massively restricted in my options.

What also didn't help was that I'd do battles in the first patch of grass on each route, assuming each route was consistent with its wild pokemon. When I found nothing interesting there, I'd just dodge the grass for the rest of the route. Now I know not to do that.

Someone mentioned a QR code thing and being able to catch a Totodile-- can anyone explain how that works?

My apologies in advance, I haven't gotten far in the game, haven't noticed any QR stuff, etc

That kinda sounds like you've just been having a bit of bad luck, man. I've been playing on Moon version all weekend, mostly during the day (so, night in-game). I've made it to route 10 and I'm well into my third PC box, without having caught any duplicates. I'm finding this game has a significantly higher variety in the early-game than most of these games do.

Am I supposed to be able to find a Wishiwashi at the second trial's spot? I'm fishing/surfing like crazy and have yet to find one :(

I only found one when there were splashes above the fishing spot. Not sure if that's the only way to find one or if that just means the odds are better though.

I caught mine in one of the guaranteed fights leading up to the trial though.

quick question: is exp-sharing still in and does it still break the game, difficulty-wise?

I would say it's more balanced than XY, but the thing that does kind of break the game is the bonus XP you can get if you use the Pokemon Amie feature to make your Pokemon super happy. My Decidueye racks up Exp when he's not even involved thanks to it. It is useful for bringing really low level Pokemon up.

Has anyone tried out Minior? He seems interesting and his stats are pretty solid, but I don't really have a spot on my team. I was thinking about benching Alolan Dugtrio, but his type coverage is just too good.

The new Pokemon are outclassed early on but they start really holding their own on the second island.

When people refer to Alola being slow they're usually referring to the speed stat of the new Pokemon, not the battle speed. Most of the new Pokemon have really low speed stats.

Wild happiny hold it.
No they don't. They hold Oval stones instead. So unless you can buy Lucky Eggs form somewhere it one per playthrough*...like the Apriocon balls seem to be (I'm really thankfull for there being loads of options for legal love balls now but such limited supply will make it tedious to make use of them).

Hopefully when Pokemon Global link opens that will harbor solutions to both those problems...and hopefully not in a silly mini game 2 years from now either.

*-It's really baffling. The first time level 100 has mattered in a long time (due to hyper training) and they've gone and taken away as many level grinding options as possible.
