Pokémon Sun & Moon |OT| Ultra Beasts and where to find them

Man, some of the reviews saying they finished the game in 17-20 hours have me completely perplexed. I'm 18 hours in, and I just finished the second island. I'm not even really trying to drag my feet. Hoping this is a long one for me!

36 for me, trying to catch most of the new pokes along the way.

I really don't enjoy the call for help system. It makes catching Pokemon super tedious at times.

It wouldn't be a problem if they let people throw Pokeballs even if there's another Pokemon on its side of the field.

But they don't. I don't care how easy SOS battles make getting shinies/HAs. When something as simple just grabbing a mon to help round out your team in the main campaign can potentially turn into a 20+ turn trial of tedium, there's something wrong.

goshdarnit why does every new Pokemon have terrible speed in this?

Vikavolt would be great if it wasn't totally dead in the water. I feel compelled to use old Pokemon just so I don't get wrecked.

Paralyze it and it can't do shit.

Thank you! Do I have to be "introduced" to SOS battles during the trials or will they just happen in the wild? Haven't encountered one yet, but that could be because battles aren't lasting long enough...

You have to do the first Trial.

Also someone above mentioned Pikachu and Pichu; Pichu can be found alone, but Pikachu is SOS exclusive. It might be worth getting Pichu first as it can learn Nasty Plot.

Well apparently my wife managed to catch the PokeRus last night. And now we're both flooded in virus'd pokemon. Did they boost the rate on it showing up this gen?

Ill give you a starter for one of those virus contagious pokemon.

Man oh man... Just finished the (story spoiler after Ula Ula)
Aether Foundation raid. That was actually pretty difficult using set with no EXP share! I was at a serious type disadvantage and my team pretty much went to war every meaningful battle. Lusamine straight walled me with her Clefable and I had to do hella work just to take it down.
Im dying to replay that whole section with a ultra hard mod, it would be crucial.

I freaking love Guzma, I washed him twice then on the third fight he utterly decimates my team, I think it was the
Masqurain, oh and the damn Pinsir!!
. I fucking love that he's a bug trainer. God, he's the best character.

Again, I can't wait for this game to get difficulty mods, With the story, I bet you could make some awesome ass encounters.

Just got to Poni Island, so the Jangmo-o is on. Wanna hear a joke? So I read through y'all chatting about Delmhise a few pages back, and as soon as I dock at Poni, I go to that weird fishing spot by the house.

2 attempts, Lvl 20 Delmhise Lol

Pichu is a pain to evolve, though, and super weak. Especially since you can get Magnemite around the same area just a few minutes later and it's much better. But Magneton takes awhile to get to Magnezone, since it's a location evolution, and Raichu is super easy to get.

I would say it's more balanced than XY, but the thing that does kind of break the game is the bonus XP you can get if you use the Pokemon Amie feature to make your Pokemon super happy. My Decidueye racks up Exp when he's not even involved thanks to it. It is useful for bringing really low level Pokemon up.

Has anyone tried out Minior? He seems interesting and his stats are pretty solid, but I don't really have a spot on my team. I was thinking about benching Alolan Dugtrio, but his type coverage is just too good.

I thought about it, but it doesn't seem very suitable for in game battles , it's Shielded Form is sort of bad, it's okay but not great defensively. It's Core Form is okay but not great offensively (nice Speed though). Seems like it's only real use is to do setup in Shielded Form and then try and sweep, which it's not bad at , thanks to eg Shell Smash, but it seems like far too much work to do every battle, especially given how fragile it is when in Core form, when there's pokemon you can just straight up wipe in game battles with.

Honestly, I think most of the new Pokémon are slow because the game is just intended to be harder. There is no greater benefit in an in-game battle than being able to outspeed your opponent. Previous Pokémon games have allowed you to always go first and always hit hard with the likes of Infernape and Greninja and never have to suffer actually being hit or possibly have to deal with a status condition.

Slower Pokémon with higher attack and HP, which is how most of the new Pokémon are balanced, prevent you from always going first no matter what even if you are over-leveled.

Guess no one can help with the festival plaza.

I'm not sure how to register people as VIP's (never tried it), but in order to get coins you need to walk around and talk to the people with red thought bubbles. Once you get your plaza level high enough you'll be able to do missions that give you coins.

You're not really clear with what your problem is. Why can't you earn coins or register friends? Is it giving you an error code or something?

As far as earning coins, you need to find the visitors with their name displayed in Red instead of Blue. Those are the ones who have tasks you can do for FCs. You also get FCs just for doing link battles and trades with people.

When do those with bubbles show up? Haven't seen them at all.

Ive been saying this for a week. The new pokemon are slow because they attack better overall. I guess HP is straight too because most them don't faint overall even when getting SE damage. Of course a handful of them are glass., but I can't wait to go postgame so I can properly respec my team, and see just how optimized they can be.

Time to get me a Totodile.

You'll probably have to wait a bit. A lot of the features are locked behind levelling it up and the explanations are pretty crappy. But the short story is: connect to the Internet, look for trainers who's dialogue box is red , talk to them, and answer whatever question they ask, you'll get Festival Coins (FC), when you have enough your plaza levels up unlocking more features and giving you the option to swap out one stall. You can also earn FC by doing "challenges" once you hit Level 2, by talking to the lady right outside the castle.

Just walk up to a person. Normally a blue text/thought bubble will appear on the screen, but sometimes it's red. Here's a picture (Sorry it was made for ants)

The game is still enjoyable, just not up to par with admittedly what older games did. There's not much exploration here unlike say, Gen IV. There's much more cutscenes and linearity than Gen V and VI. The training and new implements are a massive downgrade from what did before (no, I will walk to you and say SOS is frustrating in many ways). And there are some questionable Pokemon builds that's asking for a third version which is par for the course of an original release.

I just really wish that with the end of the 20th anniversary, they'd be less rushing on "ANNIVERSARY GUISE!" and actually focus much on the mechanics.

Walk past a visitor, and it pops up above their head. If it's blue, you just get to shoot the shit with them, if it's red, you have a chance to win some FC.

Thanks I'll check again about to finish up second island.

You can't die before your death
The general consensus is that this is the best Pokémon game in over a decade if not ever.

I'll go with ever. Finally gone the grid world design and you don't go through 5 buttons to throw a pokeball. Streamline the Amie, visible status effects, removal of HM, More character customization, Type effectiveness indicator, removal of gyms and more. This is a gigantic jump for the series.

I think that's a plus for me, personally. I never enjoyed exploring the areas of Pokemon games that felt like D-Tier Zelda dungeons. Wandering through twisty caves, solving silly Team Rocket teleporter puzzles, those always felt like obnoxious padding to me. I much prefer the more stream-lined environmental design here. It still features a diverse array of different environments, and I feel like my time in each of them feels meaningful, rather than drawn-out.

Alola in general is a huge reason I'm liking this game as much as I am. There's a specificity to the design of the region that is fantastic. When previous regions, like Kalos, based their design on a real-world place. It felt like very surface-level homages. Yeah, there's a big central city with an Eiffel Tower stand-in and some bakeries, but by-and-large, most locations in Kalos felt interchangeable with previous Pokemon regions.

Alola feels like a really specific place with it's own culture and identity, it feels like a wholly different part of the world from previous Pokemon regions and I love that.

Why are swimmers so pale? Most of the rest of the trainers have tans or are generally darker, but the swimmers, the ones most likely to actually have a tan, are ghostly white...

I was just thinking about how the type-effectiveness appearing in battle if you have caught the opposing Pokemon actually motivates me to catch all the Pokemon I see.

Despite the series being built on the "catch em all" mentality, this was never how I played the games. I would only catch the Pokemon I wanted to use, or that seemed very rare, and usually finished a game with less than 50 Pokemon owned. I don't know how typical this is. I've been playing regularly since Gen I and it simply never appealed to me to catch creatures I had no intention of using.

Now I catch everything because I look forward to completing Dex pages, what Rotom has to say about the capture, and to have type information on the Pokemon appear in battle.

This is the first time in my twenty year relationship with the series that I am actually doing what the game wants me to do: catch them all. The only other time I was motivated to do so was during the early culture of Red/Blue, but even then, it was about the Pokemon you wanted, not the ones you didn't have.

About to go to the second island. Been leveling up Slowpoke to level 20, but he still seems so weak. I understand that Slowking/Slowbro has great base stats, but it'll be a long while before I can evolve. I wonder if I should just dump him for Abra...

While I wouldn't say I played the same way, I did try to catch everything I came across, I just didn't really ever dig for the hard-to-find stuff that I didn't intend on using. I feel similarly, my fianceé and I were talking last night about how this is the first time we both feel really compelled to finish up the Pokedex once we get to the post game, and discussing strategies on how we could work together to do it haha.

Pro tip for festival plaza. Best way is to set in your responses that you're always up for missions, go online, join in other people's missions, and watch the fc roll in

I catch Pokemon to fill up my slave labor camps.

Those shards aren't going to mine themselves. Those berries aren't going to plant themselves.

I'm going to finally start playing properly today. If there's anyone wanting to add more people, here's my Friend Code again:

Sure, if you happen to have a spare Rowlet, I'd love one. Can toss you a contagious Eevee 'cuz I've got like five or six in the box from using that grass patch to infect a box and a half in the PC. At work right now, but we can get in touch. Last time I played a Pokemon game was Diamond, though, so I'm a bit unfamiliar with how you do long-distance trades these days.

Catch the pokemon or just fight it before?

This is a good question and I'm not entirely sure. Let's not look into it as to not ruin it for me.

While I wouldn't say I played the same way, I did try to catch everything I came across, I just didn't really ever dig for the hard-to-find stuff that I didn't intend on using. I remember in Silver Version, my final haul was Feraligatr, five other Pokemon I don't remember, and a Misdreavus. Misdreavus was the only remaining Pokemon in my PC. After it became clear I wouldn't be using it anymore, I would release it, so my final end-game collection was seven Pokemon. Misdreavus was just cool and rare and I didn't know what it was.

Oh, and the legendaries I guess. But those are sort of a separate deal.

I catch Pokemon to fill up my slave labor camps.

Those shards aren't going to mine themselves. Those berries aren't going to plant themselves.

I force my Pokemon to perform plays I wrote, in which I also star in and direct.
