How was karate?

I'm caned. I got to the gym, did 3x10 deadlifts, about 10 minutes of heavy bag, a striking class then 8 rounds of 2 minute striking sparring with only one break.

I went to town on pretty much everyone except the teacher/gym owner. I pretty much have a size/range advantage over all of them, though so the odds are stacked in my favor build wise.

It was really fun as usual but I usually only get about five rounds in some I'm particularly beat tonight.

Worked my tactics, though which felt good. Crowded the karate guy, stayed at the end of my range on most of the others and used a lot of fakes. Also trying to nail the timing on single strikes with combo follow ups, I think it will help me up my game.

Karate was not as bad as I was expecting. I get there early to help my teacher set up the dojo then come back later for class, and she shared with me that she'd over eaten at the amazing chicken and waffles place near the dojo. Because of that she wasn't up for much, so we just did kata the whole time. My legs are weak because I haven't been practicing enough though, so I'm going to have to be a little more vigilant.

We also got a new student on Monday who has a black belt in Kenpo, but hasn't trained for about 10 years. I'm hoping that they'll be as dedicated to our system, and that maybe I can make them a training partner.

I hyper extended my arm today.. got caught in a crucifix. It hurts.:(

Usually in armbar attempts I have some luck with being able to rotate the should, but not here. It was completely locked in. Ouch.

After a few years of Tae Kwon Do spattered through out my life (reaching blue belt), a real brief stink of Hapkido, and a semester of Judo in college, I have decided to get into martial arts again. Just broke up with the person I was dating, so I've been aiming for something to fill my time and also combat some severe loneliness I've been experiencing. I'll be practicing Hapkido and Tae Kwon Do. I'd prefer going for the Japanese arts, particularly aikido, but I live in a small town, so I have to take what I can get.

Tonight is my first Hapkido lesson, but I couldn't sleep at all last night. I have a 90 minute commute each way, so if I can get in a good nap I'll go, otherwise I am for certain going to Tae Kwon Do tomorrow. I am so not limber at all, though in my prime of Tae Kwon Do I was. That's probably going to be my biggest challenge. Either way, I am stoked!

It's a rare sparring session that something doesn't get bruised up or over stretched with grappling :)

My teacher handed me a beating last night. Not sure if it was because I landed a few shots on him (which I've been able to do a little recently) or maybe he thought I needed to be taught a lesson but either way he went pretty hard and I must have eaten at least ten good hard punches over the 3 minute spar.

Got a bit of a headache today, it's not too bad, though.

We did lots of roundhouse kicks today, and my back is really tired. Does anyone know some exercises you can do you strengthen the muscles of the lower back?

Class was good today, everybody did every kata that they know, in unison, until their last kata. Our new student is gone though, but I guess that's the way it is.

Yeah! This friday, we're fighting from guard, and the white belt I am sparring with (I am 60 pounds heavier) goes into try and pass my guard. I accidently bump my face into his knee, and it fucks out my jaw. for real. I can't close my mouth, the ear is blocked. feels like a broken fracture. Fortunately it was just a bruise, not a fracture.

I am competing on saturday, the day on the manny-Paq fight, and I am nervous, but not as nervous as those guys would be.

I have a love/hate relationship with competitions. The good is testing yourself, supporting your martial arts, bringing back the experience and wisdom to your training partners, representing your gym.

the bad part is the pressure you put on yourself. you don't want to look bad, your mind races about the the opponent. will they completely fuck my shit up? I got badly injured in my first competition over 4 years ago and I still feel the pain from it, so that sits with me. I am better than I was back then.

Recently got my blue belt in brazillian jiu jitsu! We have a shark tank type deal where our instructor brings in guys from nearby gyms to work us for an hour and a half and at the end he gives us our new belt. It was torturous, but man did I feel accomplished at the end.

Doesn't change anything tho, back at the gym the next Monday getting my butt kicked as usual, still putting in work

Congratulations!

I also got my blue belt earlier this week. Well the ceremony is still to come. We have to test for every belt except black (Alliance thing). Can't say I'm particularly excited or anything like that. Falls into the category of nice things to have. Just looking forward to more pieces falling into the place with my game. Currently I'm mainly working towards a more effective half guard.

Congrats to both of you!

My competition did not go well. I managed to beat my first opponent who was 330 pounds. He had quite the pressure.

But I spend so much energy fighting for kimuras that by the second and third match I lost. I just didn't have the strength to defend them even though I saw them. I feel I escape tons of those situations in training in my own gym but I was just so gassed after one match.

I was glad I participated, but I did not like my first performance. Fifth tournament, and I still totally over commit on my grips and use all my energy. Adrenalin dump and nerves kill everything I had. And I felt in good shape! Several of my training partners had the same issue, though some of them managed to win!

There is a NAGA in Sweden in September... I think I will go that and see if I can improve over the summer. I would love one of those NAGA belts.
Only problem is that I know crap bout defending and escaping toeholds and heel hooks and kneebars. Since I have been training gi for almost 5 years I have to be in expert division so I imagine they will come up a lot.

It is really hard for me to muster the courage to compete so I am glad I am doing it. the experience is great, and my instructor is not mad at me. I think he is just happy that I am putting myself out there. I feel humble but disappointed in myself.

So an old instructor of mine started his own BJJ school. Made up my mind to sign up to his new school and now find myself in that dilemma where I have to cancel my membership from my current school. I really hate the feeling that I'm going through as I'll be leaving friends and may be labeled as someone disloyal. Part of me could care less because in the end of the day, it's a business that I pay dues to and I'm making the best decision for myself. I know if I leave though, many of my training partners will follow me without me even trying to poach any of them to follow. Then shit will get ugly. Friendships will split, money will be taken out of an instructor's pocket, and a possible rivalry will form as the 2 gyms are separated by only 1-2 miles.

We had a grading last week, I love seeing everyone with their new belts and how proud they are to have achieved them. Always add that extra bit of buzz around the dojo haha.

So a student that came a few times and then disappeared was back yesterday. She said she'd been really sick, but it's been like 2 months. Her husband came in toward the end of the class and watched, I said hi to him, but he wasn't exactly friendly. It makes me wonder if there's an issue there, but I guess it's not any of my business.

Anthony Bourdain's new season of Parts Unknown features him in various Jiu Jitsu hoodies. He and is wife make great ambassadors for the art.

...Aaaand my teachers are moving. They do think they've found someone to take over at our dojo, but he teaches a different style. They've got dojos in other cities where they've got students to take over classes, but no one where I am knows enough yet, so if that doesn't work out I just have to find another school.

So far, Team Canada is doing well. A friend of mine lost his first fight, but won his second one (they're round robins prelims as far as I understand) in seconds. Very happy for him!

Hey Martial arts gaf, what are your thoughts on instructors ignoring tapping? My instructor is generally a really great teacher, but he's quite old and I think has figured out that a lot of people start tapping before it hurts because he doesn't go easy on people. Anyway, last night he had me in a ground pin and was showing another student how to do an elbow lock. He didn't hear/feel me tapping though and snapped it back so much I passed out from the pain. He asked if I was okay after but I'm not sure if I should man up and rub some dirt in it or what. I can deal with getting hurt in class, it happens a fair bit, but I'd rather not end up with life long injuries.

I have no problem with him not going easy but he's an ass for ignoring someone tapping. Your instructor knows better, WTF. Sounds like he's got an ego issue and is incorporating fear into his game to stay top dog at his old age. It's 2015, there's no place for that.

Ignoring tap is never okay no matter who is doing it. Your instructor making you pass out from pain by ignoring the tap? Seriously wtf. Change schools.

Although I have to say it's easy to be distracted in a teching situation. That said even if you wouldn't have tapped taking the lock that far in that situation is just insane behavior.

Has anyone here tried taking Karate classes in Japan? I've studied American Kenpo for most of my life, but I'll be in Japan for the next couple months (and possibly longer), so I'm interested in checking out a nearby dojo. There's one within walking distance of where I'm living.

Damn, it's been more than a year and nobody has posted in this thread? Oy.

Anyway, if there's still anyone to read this, I'm going to be in the Salt Lake area for a little bit and am looking to train. Anybody know of a good dojo in the area?

I was just thinking about this thread.

For about three years I had been going to a boxing gym on and off. Lately I had shifted more to a junior coach kind of role since we lost one of our coaches and the former assistant coach took his place. Mostly I've been working with kids high school aged and younger but on occasion we get adults in the classes.

About three weeks ago I started doing Kickboxing at the same facility with a different class. The first two classes were purely fitness but this last weekend I did light sparring for the first time. We rotated between six people for one minute rounds. I think I threw maybe one kick but at least my boxing was on point. I ate some shots but I countered a lot and put more work on the body than the others. I need more sparring though to really get my boxing habits under control and focus on checking kicks better, but all in all I'd say my time doing other training helped quite a bit in the ring in a new environment.

I started Kendo recently.

Apparently I have good footwork for a beginner but my swinging isn't quite there.

Not much to really talk about except that it's been pretty damn fun so far

Nice! Let me know if you have any questions (I've been doing it for a decade). The beginning can be rough, but it's all worth it once you get into bogu!

Had my first Kendo class recently. We did some Bokuto training and practiced the first Kendo Kihon Kata.

It was pretty fun actually, I guess handling a japanese sword is something I've always wanted to try.

If I could I'd probably rather try some Kenjutsu stuff but there are so few dojos for that (understandably I suppose).

Well for the time being Kendo is as close as I'll get so let's see how it goes. Next class will be more focused on Shinai stuff.

Hmm, I haven't bought a beginner's set in a while. E-bogu used to be all the rage, but it's less advantageous for a Canadian lately due to bad exchange rate and customs fees. Might be worth it if you are American though, but a lot of Canadians I know have switched to Bogushop, All Japan Budogu, or Tozando (last two might be a bit too high end for beginners though). Where are you located?

Bokuto are cheap, fortunately.

Third sparring session this past weekend with my Kickboxing group. One thing is for sure, my stamina is nowhere near where it needs to be.

Last weekend when we sparred I did well. One guy was way taller than me with very good kicks so I walked him down and nullified that best I could. Unfortunately (fortunately?) he put a shit load of work on my inside leg which I did not check effectively, so I did suffer a little bit in terms of mobility, but I pressed on and stayed inside. I need to do more kick checking drills. Worked hard, threw up my breakfast, had massive bruises on my inner thighs, and my confidence was sky high.

This weekend I really wanted to focus more on fighting taller people since I'm not tall to begin with. Threw more kicks, but I have a bitch of a time setting up lead leg kicks so I stayed a bit after just working on that on the bags. Landed a single Superman punch and some really good overhands but I ate a lot of shots and was on my back foot way more than I'm used to which I didn't like. I need to work more on pivoting inside our outside rather than stepping backwards. And I swear, sometimes I feel like the only thing in range are peoples guts, two of the other guys are so damn tall.

I did buy some Kickboxing shorts though, the kind I use now feel a bit restrictive. The new shorts feel like I'm just in my underwear they're so light. And as always, every time I make a purchase I buy more wraps as well. I've been giving away my old pairs to kids in the gym who only have one or two.

Interesting, i am a boxer. How hard has the learning curve been for you trying out Kick Boxing man?

So head movement changes a little. I slip punches moderately well, and I usually duck under to step out and set up jabs to the head or body punches. But in Kickboxing I can't bring my head down as much because suddenly a kick coming at your body now comes to your head. So that's one habit I need to get out of. We keep the bladed stance, but I sometimes shuffle to southpaw in order to put power on what was my lead leg. When I box I never consciously leave my orthodox stance. This is another thing I'm working on. Distance is changed up too, like I said above. For me, being just outside of jab range still leaves me in range for kicks.

On the plus side, when I shifted focus to boxing my partners I do well. I don't think I've been hit much less targeted with body shots at all, whereas it's pretty much open season on them and I get lots of free hooks to the body, even slow rear hooks.

The transition isn't incredibly hard, it can just be difficult to really gauge their kick range even after you've established your own range with your jab. And of course, having never practiced kicks, I can't kick to the head just yet. :D

If you're used to turning on the ball of your foot inwards for lead hooks, turning outwards for right kicks will come easy to you too. You turn in your hips when you kick, so it flows well since you're already used to pivoting on hooks.

Good good, looking into trying out MMA as a side interest and see how it goes, your post is greatly appreciated man.

Guys, I did my first "rolling session" last sunday... I think I'm addicted. Like for real, I had a huge dopamine rush after I left class and couldn't stop smiling. It's just an intro class once every week on sunday. We have yet to roll with classmates but we got to try to apply RNC's and move from side control to mount with the athletes that train there. So much fun. Can't wait for sunday's now.
