No Man's Sky: Foundation Update (v1.1)

got got 1 hit killed by a crab thing

survival is nuts

trying to get to my ship is like the hardest thing i have ever done in a game

This is the part I find most intriguing and I'd definitely be trying it if I didn't just sell my copy.

Above all what I felt like the game lacked was some kind of purpose or challenge. I want to feel like I'm accomplishing something. That's why survival mode made me perk up a bit.

The anger is because they won't address what happened in the first place. What are you not understanding?

Do you have any idea how frustrating it is if someone wrongs you then pretends like it never happened? It's going to follow them around forever until they eventually acknowledge it

I was a backer of Godus, so yes, I have been in that scenario as a customer. In that case, the devs didn't even try to make the game they sold in the pitch. But I moved on from that, since I acknowledged the risk I took.

I am getting that people are angry, I am getting why they're angry (even if a lot of people have gone way way to far with it). I just don't think a lengthy explanation is going to make things better. For some, maybe, but a lot of people are just going to use it against them.

Like I said before, with people reading that much into one sentence, I can understand why they're hesitant to say that much more.

Efforts in to trying to improve the game, like this update, is most likely going to work better.

How to harvesters work ? Do they just deplete a single deposit and then destruct ? Seems easier just to laser the whole thing if that's all it does .

Next up send probes and droids to planets to investigate . Though now you can scan from space it might not be required .

Are all modes independent of each other?

My vanilla save is separate? If I start survival mode I'm back to square one?

What other mode is available?

----edit.

I see a creative mode. Does this mean it's a God mode? Infinite thrust, materials etc etc etc? Planet and Galaxy hopping without any constraints?

Three modes, three saves.

And yes. Creative Mode looks like Minecraft basically.

I'll tell you how I view it: As a developer, they should address the concerns that have been dragged out the past few months. They don't have to give every detail, every secret, etc - they just need to admit fault.

They aren't. They constantly have to remind people how small their team is, how so so hard they worked on it, how much this game means to them, etc.

That's narcissistic, full stop.

What about everyone that bought the game? What, exactly, about the consumer is less fucking important to address than your own trials and tribulations? At what point will they stop trying to pull on heartstrings?

They straight up presented a game that existed only in their own minds- what everyone else got, was just a shell. An empty, meaningless, half-hearted shell and they are so stuck up their own asses they can't see the problem.

Too much time has passed, IMO. Everything they've done makes it more difficult for 3rd parties like my team to be taken seriously.

I mean, being up front and honest about your game is probably the easiest thing you can do but instead they continue to hide from the issue and "woe is me" their way through development. That's not healthy for the industry, that's not healthy for us and that's not healthy for the consumer.

So, yeah, that tweet is garbage.

Totally agree with this. I have sympathy for them in that some of the abuse they've taken has been OTT, but they've been their own worst enemies and have handled the situation terribly.

I just don't think a lengthy explanation is going to make things better. For some, maybe, but a lot of people are just going to use it against them.

It absolutely 100% would, dude. Some people have noticed I rant on this game a lot, but I'd love for it to be a success story and to turn out good. Seriously! I really liked the original promise. If they got rid of the chip on their shoulder and just did an interview or put out a statement or whatever and explained what happened, why it happened, and apologized for all of it, I'd be like "okay, let's move on.". Seriously. I, like the majority of people, am capable of being very forgiving and understanding, but those things can't kick in until the original problem is acknowledged.

"Too much time has passed"... But apparently not enough to let it go.
Yes, too much time has passed to address the issue and keep playing the victim card.

So when they come back and play the victim card, I'm not allowed to call them out on it?

Did you actually read the rest of my post or just zero on on that and skip the rest?

Reading comprehension is a thing. You should try it sometime, RPGam3r. Like, the immediate sentence following that one. Perspective, holy shit!

It's nice to see they are putting out big updates like this, but I don't understand why they didn't just like, release a roadmap or something shortly after release instead of being silent and allowing things to fester.

Small 25 person team, no real PR guy, PR/marketing already bit them good when they flunked handling it.

No surprises here. Build, release is a good strategy for the studio atm to rebuild credibility.

Good shit, their full vision is starting to be realized. Now if they can just shoehorn in psvr support (not some fucking "experience" or 5 minute mission) we'll really be in business.

That's narcissistic, full stop.

Jack, you are welcome to your opinion. But the amount of text you have typed bitching about this game is unbelievably vast. acres of text. i can't read you anymore on this. you just go on and on every thread.

walk away, dude. walk away. you're not fighting any 'good fight'.

I don't even disagree with many of your points but I just can't read your posts anymore, so mired are you in the hate for this game. I'm a dev too and you don't speak for me. You're the one being narcissistic, sorry to say.

As for this patch – I am really surprised at the amount of work they've done in 8 weeks. I was skeptical about this update but it really does look fairly robust. Obviously stuff like hydro plants and so forth were things they had in mind in the original game as I remember the props (sitting uselessly about). Funny they still seem to be leaning more towards Minecraft then Starbound.

That's a great update but the inflated sense if self-importance shines through yet again in that tweet.

Never miss a chance to show how small their studio is, what they've gone through to make the game, etc. Enough with that shit already.

Still hasn't come clean on all the bullshit. Still playing the victim card.

Again, the update sounds cool but it also sounds like something better suited as an addition to ALL THE OTHER SHIT THEY TALKED ABOUT.

Sheesh.

That's a lot of interpretation from a single sentence. I'm pretty sure it's not like they don't know they fucked up. Getting death threats and being stalked might've given them a clue, too.

I don't like the lack of communication either, but I can see why they just keep working.

Good on them for staying dedicated to improving the game and coming out swinging with a really solid, impressive update. It's a sign of more good things to come for sure.

That video came out in December of 2014. Features got cut. Happens in games all the time.

I don't understand why people are still so mystified by this. It's a much more plausible explanation than "Sean Murray is a horrible man who lied to trick people into buying his game!" too.

I partially agree with you, because that indeed happens all the time, and people are taking that interview very literally while it was meant as a more lighthearted and jokey "100 questions" type of thing.

However, Hello Games and Sean in particular shot himself in the foot (in terms of public opinion, not sales, obviously) by refusing to talk about a lot of fundamental aspects of the game. This in turn created a massive hype machine and speculation threads, increasing every little detail he said to legendary heights.

Meaning, and I think this is a very possible scenario, when Sean was asked about customizing your character and answering with "sort of", he was merely thinking that you can have a custom upgraded exosuit and multi-tool, so it's "sort of" a character customization. This wasn't a deliberate lie meant to hype up some major gameplay aspect like character customization (in the sense that it hints it's there at all), it was a dumb quick response to a perfectly reasonable question.

To be clear though, if you keep acting like that, not communicating on things you're not sure about while outright saying there are things that you think will work but instead haven't been finished yet (and add to that the marketing material that's shown unfinished or non-existent things) leads to straight up misinformation, or lies if you will. That doesn't necessarily mean they intended to lie and deceive people from the start, but at some point it spiraled into exactly that, willingly or not, it doesn't matter really. If you end up selling a 60$ early access game with a bunch of core stuff not working as advertised (while the advertised details were few and taken very literally by your own fault), then you should expect a large backlash. Which is what they chose in the end, maybe hoping that the reactions wouldn't be that bad (long dev cycles can do that to you, especially if you don't have people that bring you to the ground and your head out of your ass), which obviously wasn't the case.

It feels like they chose to keep their studio afloat financially so they could keep working, instead of making a potentially devastating choice of coming out and revealing they're nowhere near as ready for release, delaying the game further, maybe changing contract terms with Sony etc. But I don't know, even then, it could've been prevented much, much earlier, before ever getting that far. It looks like a clear example of mismanagement and biting more than they could chew, relying on blind faith that they could still deliver and digging the ditch ever deeper.

So my main point is, HG's choice of trickled info dumps and mismanagement caused every single of their words dissected and scrutinized under a microscope (firstly increasing the hype), and then when the game came out in an unfinished state, people continued the same (or greater) level of information scrutiny to now prove just how every single word HG uttered was an outright lie. It was an overreaction in both cases.

But the bottom line is that HG did this to themselves, and as a company selling a product with misinformation, they should very well explain themselves instead of always saying "we worked hard and it was tough, we hear you and we'll continue working on it". It's easily seen as marketing bullshit speak expected from a big publisher instead of this small brave indie studio that many of us seemed to grow fond of.

On a personal level, I can understand why they're behaving the way they are right now. If I fucked up so royally, I'd probably like to crawl under a rock and just let the work speak in my place, but it's unfair to your customers and fans, and downright baffling from a marketing perspective. Well, maybe not that strange because it's a viable strategy all in all, but man, not cool.

I'm glad they're still working on the game, and hopefully one day it'll grow into something really special. If anything though, they've at least made a really good practical example of how-not-to-do things in this business, and it's one for the history books.

Seriously, if you thought the survival aspect was lacking in challenge...survival mode wants to have a word with you lol.

Man, if they can expand the gameplay loop to make it less repetitive and samey, this could become a game I stick with for a long time. They definitely have the foundation, I just hope they make the right choices from here on out.

That's a lot of interpretation from a single sentence. I'm pretty sure it's not like they don't know they fucked up. Getting death threats and being stalked might've given them a clue, too.

I don't like the lack of communication either, but I can see why they just keep working.

Every time they speak and don't acknowledge their original misrepresentation of the game is another time they come off as disdainful, disrespectful, and stubborn. Most studios would have had an open discussion about this stuff from the start, especially indie studios, but for some reason these people have a serious chip on their shoulder. They seem to resent the customer base.

Impressive video. I still don't understand the appeal of building a base in a game that wants you to stay on the move but I guess people will like the decoration etc. Hopefully we can dock our ship in the freighter and make that a mobile base. Good on Hello Games for putting in work, least they could do after what they shipped.

Hate for the game? No I have problems with the dev and how they handled it from start to finish.

Also, how on earth is calling out their bullshit narcissistic? How is asking for them to address concerns of their community narcissistic?

Honest question. I'd like to hear why you feel that is narcissistic.

Edit: I'm being serious. If I'm being narcissistic by calling out Hello Games for constantly talking about themselves and not the concerns of paying customers then I obviously need to learn the new definition of narcissism.

That's a lot of interpretation from a single sentence. I'm pretty sure it's not like they don't know they fucked up. Getting death threats and being stalked might've given them a clue, too.

It's not a single sentence. It's not just that one tweet. They have constantly reveled in their own greatness of their small team and mention it constantly.

How about mentioning the consumer? How about considering the consumer instead of themselves, for once?

Who knows if base building was a part of their original vision, but I'll admit that was a nice trailer.

If a Pro support patch releases soon, I'll pop the disc back in.

Jesus, HG fucked up but can we focus on the update in this thread? Lots of other places to shit on Sean and complain about a lack of transparency. These threads devolve into the exact same circle jerk of whining, and none of you even express novel ideas- just circulate other people's complaints. Some of you call him narcissistic but expecting a personal apology and a blow job sounds narcissistic too.

Complaining about problems with the update itself makes more sense in this thread.

Just watching now. Planets with actually no life or buildings is something I wanted from the start. It felt so cheap that you were exploring these worlds but oops, you're actually super late and every single planet had been discovered and explored by alien races.

Game looks indeed way cleaner but they managed to fuck up controls. You can't reassign keys for the item placement, so as my keyboard is AZERTY, when I want to move forward it make the item placement menu, and if I press again, I can move forward. Why on earth can't I set the bindings for this ?

Man much respect to the team. They got a lot of unnecessary hate after initial release and still seem very dedicated to the game. Though the game was flawed I enjoyed my initial few weeks with it. I'm definitely jumping back in.

and im fucked again in survival

i die no matter what so yeah...time to start a new save again

pretty rough if you cant get to the ship and repair it fast enough you are fucked and the save is dead

time to restart until i get a nice planet and not one that kills you in a minute

So How's the performance anyway, on my pc it was not stable so i stopped playing . Also looking at some videos, like above graphic improved i guess?

God damn, that tweet. It puts focus on everything that people are pissed about without actually directly addressing it in any way. I can't tell if it's some masterful trolling or if they're just that incompetent/self-centered. It's amazing for all of the wrong reasons.

There's a lot of defiance and resentment in that tweet

I've restarted about 10 times, every single planet has been just as brutal as the last lol.

Some tips:
-DON'T SPRINT
-Only use jetpack when ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY
-FIND CAVES, your hazard protection regens when in caves
-Standing still stops life support drain, make use of this to scout for materials
-DON'T SPRINT

Agreed, but it's mad cringe to me too lol. Like something a 14 year old says thinking he sounds deep when he's barely lived.

They should have just not sent that part of the tweet lol

Finished watching the video. Just improvements all around. Still unsure how cool bases will actually be on planets what with no one seeing them and the whole point of the game to be to keep exploring and discovering. They may have more use in survival mode or something. Still, it'll be nice to just build stuff and explore in creative mode and having a freighter seems like the real thing here, being able to have your own mobile base customised how you like (on the inside at least) that you can call to any system and use as storage etc.

And yeah, definitely earned some respect back seeing as I never thought they would actually implement additional features of any meaning. I still think they deserve the "hate" they got for being misleading about the game prior to and around launch but this shows that they are making an effort to improve.

Is the update live for PC yet? Bought the game yesterday on steam because it was on sale. Was having a blast with it in the first few hours, I'm glad they decided to give it such a massive update right after I bought it lol
