Steam Winter Sale 2016 thread of hoping for better deals elsewhere

Damnit, didn't realize there was a deadline for updating posts for the 52 game challenge... was gonna do it during my downtime tomorrow with impressions and everything :( oh well, at least I know I did it. Maybe I'll post it in the new years' Steam thread.

So I got Hitman in the sale and it seems pretty good so far. They really improved the disguise system over Absolution, so that now only certain individuals (rather than anyone holding that disguise) become suspicious. And on that note, the suspicion system has been massively improved so that it feels a lot better overall. And yeah, the levels are as freeform as they say.

I thought I did pretty well in the Paris mission.... got one star, 30k points. On my friends list I ended up.... third-to-last. Dammit. (Shoutout to zkylon for going commando with one non-target kill, and BernardoOne for that sick 42 second run).

Any other games out there like Shadow Tactics aside from Commandos? I'm having a blast so far with the game and hoping to grab something similar to it before the sale ends.

One of my best friends and I succumbed to get Melty Blood Actress Again and we played online with me on DualShock 4, him on keyboard even though we've never played this version before and I only briefly played the original Melty Blood a few years ago. So..utterly random, amateur but fun since we kept choosing new characters from one round to another.

I think the highlight involved his playing as Nero, a vampire able to summon monsters from inside him and teleport while I was playing as Hisui, a maid who can throw objects. It turned into a mind game of his teleporting and my trying to get hits on him based on where he'd show up or if I could get him with my frying pan.

I'm not familiar with shadow tactics, but the desperados games and Robin Hood are pretty well known commandos-alikes.

Ronda made a fool of herself last night and now Mariah followed suit, I have a good feeling about 2017.

At least its already entertaining.

Someone gifted me The Divison. I actually like what little I've played from this game. heard so many terrible things, but it seems fun. Does the Season Pass include ALL of the DLC listed on Steam like the Survival DLC?

It includes Underground, Survival and the next one, Last Stand, along with a few cosmetics, mostly gun skins. It doesn't include the cosmetic packs, except maybe the Frontline pack, not sure since I pre-ordered the Collector's Edition.

I think I'm done with the sales, still have just under $10 on my account because my last order couldn't be split between my Steam wallet and PayPal.

Final damage from Steam, other store fronts and purchases from other gaffers on BST:

LoH: Trails in the Sky SC
God Eater 2 Rage Burst (which as we know comes with the first game)
Limbo (turned out to be an unintentional double dip)
Saints Row II*
Saints Row III:TFP*
Saints Row IV:GotCE*
Rebel Galaxy
Broken Age
TIS-100
Remember Me
Burnout Paradise: The Ultimate Box*
Skyborn
Pony Island
Starbound
Shovel Knight
The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth
Axion Verge
Need for Speed

Also bought Goat Simulator's DLC.

*Intentional double or triple dips.

Might be a few I'm forgetting too but this combined with what I bought last month... I'm good for a while.

Would you say it's worth it?

Depends what you like about the game.

Underground is a bunch of semi-random mini-dungeons, pretty much, that you run for loot and unlocks after finishing the main story. So, its there if you're after a relatively quick way to farm loot outside of doing missions or the Dark Zone. It has a few more audio logs, a nice cosmetic set you can earn, if you like black, and also opens up one of the Incursions, iirc.

Survival is a 1-2 hour game-in-a-game. It's a separate mode, where you, and a bunch of other Agents (PvE and PvP modes are available) start somewhere in the outer parts of the city with a pistol and some basic armour. You need to survive the cold and loot/craft clothes, loot food and drink, loot/craft weapons and armour, craft some basic skills, and some equipment to get into Dark Zone, then recover some Anti-virals, and extract after killing a Hunter NPC who shows up and has some of the skills that players use. If you die, someone else can revive you for 5 min, or kill you for good, but then that's it and you have to start another session from scratch. You get the caches you extract plus extras from your score, and these give you gear in the main game. So, even if you die you get something if you didn't do too badly, but it isn't the most efficient way of farming loot, and rather more for the survival experience itself. You can do survival pre-30, but the caches will give you level 30 items, iirc.

edit: I almost forgot the main thing about Survival is that you're infected with a virus and have a 1 hour limit till you die, though you can find meds to slow that down, you're looking at about 2 hours max per session.

I have no idea what Last Stand will be like.

I have enjoyed both Underground and Survival, but I like both the story-oriented leveling missions in the game and the loot farming endgame. Neither expansion adds any more story missions, or any real story, and the audio logs in Underground are pretty much like more phone messages. So, if story is what you are after then you'll be disappointed. If you want efficient loot farming, and a different survival-oriented experience, then I think you'll be happy.

Should I get S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl if I already have (but haven't yet played) Call of Pripyat?

Yes! Shadow of Chernobyl is a much, much different beast from Call of Pripyat. CoP has more polished mechanics, but it comes at the cost of some of losing SoC's ambitious and weird locales. Pripyat itself is the only map that is shared between the two, and there's quite a lot of differences between even those. Despite being much rougher around the edges, (edit)SoC is the game most players think of when they refer to wanting more games like S.T.A.L.K.E.R., and it's with very good reason!

I'll even throw in an old quote from DocSeuss, who stands up for Clear Sky regularly on twitter:

I think there's a lot of push-back against the game in part because Clear Sky was so... alive. A lot of people didn't like that. This often translated to "I don't like that I feel my efforts are futile/I can't 100% the game." You'd go capture a point, and then twenty minutes later, you'd lose it again. There was nothing you could do about it. So many missions, you'd hear on the radio, then you'd get a mission failure notice because the Zone is so cruel. It infuriates a typical gamey mindset. You have to learn to let go and treat the Zone like a real, brutal world to start to appreciate Clear Sky. That's when it gets good.

Really, you can't go wrong picking up at least one of the two while it's this cheap, but both are worth giving a shot!

Happy New Year SteamGAF. Have some fucking games.

That feeling when you have every card but 1 and you're locked out of the market/trades until 1 day after the sale because you got a new phone. =/

Thinking on getting ZTD on sale for cards and to have it ready once Nonary Games gets here.

Did anyone here end up buying that Empire of Angels game? I have around £10 in my wallet and I'm kinda tempted to get it, but ehhh.

What I've purchased so far:

Downwell (Wanted to try in portrait, doesn't work very well)
ABZU
Old Friend (not on sale, VR game)
Counter Fight (VR Game)
Headlander
Saints Row 2
VA-11 HALL-A
Ultimate Chicken Horse (x3, copies for friends)
Thumper
Stephen's Sausage Roll

Outside of Steam I also picked up Titanfall 2 which is less than $25 over on CDKeys right now.

Finally gonna play Rogue Legacy thanks to this sale. Just under 4 bucks! I've been regretting not playing it for a while now, but there's no excuse any longer. Psyched.
