I got my Master's in Political Science, but my core focus and my thesis in the end were ay more interdisciplinary and, honestly, tangentially related to that which they call political science these days. I was pretty lucky to have it approved in the first place. So I will be going for my PhD in what they call "Medienwissenschaft" in German, or Media Sciences. And even then, that is just the roof over everything in terms of subject area: it scarcely really describes what I am interested in for research. Hint! The research has waaaaaay too much to do with GAF.

I might have missed your post earlier, but what is the analyst position for exactly?

So, like most jobs I obtained my opportunity through networking. I went to college with a girl who is higher up in Hollywood Feed's (Place I'm working for now) Creative Department. She ended up emailing me that they were hiring for a graphic design position for the company. Not only did I have to send in a Resume, I also had to send in my portfolio of work as well. Mine, was a 31 page tabloid (11x17) spread of all my best work and projects. They ended up emailing me that they like my portfolio and wanted to invite me to their headquarters and offer me an interview. When I arrived I explained some pieces in my portfolio on a large TV. Afterwards they asked me the usual questions you get from any other job; What can you offer us? What would you change about us? etc. The interview was with the president of the company Shawn McGhee, my friend from college, and another Marketing manager. They were laughing and very agreeing to my answers and offered me part 2 of the interview; of course I said,"YES." I could choose from 4 projects and complete 2 of them within a 2 week period. I slaved over them and even took a vacation from my retail job to get them perfect.

Wow! That is a pretty awesome story. I am only just now kind of "networking", but even then it is rather darn happenstance. I purposefully avoided studying a specific degree for my master's because of how I thought it was too intertwined with the unethical non-sense that networking can become, so we shall see how much I can take it :P. Do you think it would have taken that much longer if you did not have that connection? Also, how long did it take to work out your original portfolio pieces? I have a friend who is applying right now to graphic design stuff and she has reworked her porfolio now 2x - it is apparently nerve-wracking.

Once I finished them, I had to present my projects in front of the same group once more. They absolutely loved what I had made and didn't offer a single criticism. They congratulated me and told me that I was in the Final Four (Joke) and that they'd make a choice that Friday; it was Wednesday. Before I could make it down the stairs back to my car, the marketing manager stopped me and said that I got the job. Oh the excitement... they said that they couldn't wait until Friday to say I got the job. Probably the best feeling I have had, made four years of college and art throughout my life feel worthwhile.

I'm also trying to get all of my stuff on the web as well, using Adobe Portfolio to get the right look, then I'm going to brush up on my coding and make it myself. I audited coding classes in college because it seemed important and now its my new new years resolution. My previous resolution was... get a job.

Fucking awesome. My last job I also got the "yay" just as I was leaving the building as they called me and asked if I would walk back quickly to undersign the contract, lol. My untrained eye says your portfolio work and web presentation look pretty damn professional.

There is no telling, I was just doing retail because it was easy. The thought of finding a "Real Job" sounded horrifying (It all sounds stupid now... why did I waste a year?). I worked at the same store as my dad and it was fine. My dad has been in retail for 40 years and isn't a college graduate, neither is my mom. Though, my parents and everyone around me always supported my art and were always asking why I hadn't attempted to contact a company. This is really a case of taking the first thing that flew by my head, it ended up being a thing that I could see myself sticking with; We get to have dogs in the office :D... now I just need a dog.

For the portfolio... I slapped it together in about 3 days I think. It was composed of personal and college projects. Didn't write any paragraphs or statements for each piece, but if I did I'd keep it short because think of how many of these things the company is going through a day. My composition was to highlight all of the parts that I thought were dope. Also, I arranged them in categories. If the place she's signing up for does ads, start with ads. Then talk about how the other parts could work for that company.

  • Don't start with your best thing, end with it.
  • Catagorize by type (Typography, Ads, brochures, etc) This will help show mastery.
  • Keep it simple

I should really start one of those. Been going through Behance and LinkedIn mostly.

I really dig your style, everything is modern, but still retaining this nice handmade vibe. Its impeccable use of mixed media I tell you what. I need to get into photography more and maybe learn a 3D modeler of some kind.

thanks man i appreciate it. 3D is the hardest to get into because the learning gap is quite large but i think C4D is the best for designers. I don't personally use it but it's what most graphic/motion designers use and quite a bit of tutorials to get you to do good looking stuff quickly.

My parents thought I was going to make video games when I was a kid because I'd use to mess around with the free version of 3DsMax called GMax for hours. I recreated my house out of blocks, come to think of it, it was the reason why I liked to forge in Halo games. LOL dug up a post that's 5 years old.

Sounds neat! I did a couple of papers on GAF myself in undergrad so I get you. :P Was that your interest when you first went into the political science masters?

The position is with a group that does research on NYC's public schools. Basically data cleaning and preliminary data analysis although there's also room for field work if I am so inclined.

Day 1 was alright, but the night crew has been pretty bad compared to other years. Turing Test run in particular was rough.

Yo data analysis is so dope. Our engineering department finally has someone dedicated to using our facility data to proactively troubleshoot and suggest ideas and it's been a godsend. He gets to ask the tough questions and has data to back it up.
 
I've heard of this thread but have never been around before to post in it. What a thrill.

Though I'm guessing the me-pulling-my-head-off pic probably won't suffice.

Sorry for the late reply! I work part-time at two different places, and thankfully neither fall on the weekend. Both are admin positions so I'm happy to be finally out of retail.

Cross your fingers I get something full time before 2018 :D
