Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

Nobunaga and his Ninja Force? I think I still have my Robo Aleste disc somewhere. I always liked the "Aleste" series and Compile shmups in general.

Robot Aleste is so good, a worthy sequel/revisiting of Musha Aleste

It's kind of sad that the Aleste series kind of fell off the map after Super Aleste though (boy was that game disapointing though)

Enjoy these GameFan shmup treats, for the new year :)

Spriggan 2 gets higher marks than Spriggan 1? WTF is this shit?

My first 1CC of 2017, Blue Revolver on Normal. Man, I love that game.

BTW, its binary isn't encrypted or anything, the exe can be opened/extracted with 7zip for a treasure trove of wallpaper-worth PNG files and more.

i've made it to stage 4. i will get there, someday.

i love this game.

Keep at it!

My favorite special weapon is the cluster missile, so amazing for crowd control since its explosion cluster lingers for a few seconds at the position of first impact. It really helped me to keep the mayhem of stage 4 and 5 at bay.

Figured I'd post up a link here as well and share with the GAF shmup crew! :-)

Still been working on Progear No Arashi, and in the past two weeks I've had quite a few big improvements to my score! Enjoy!

Just to follow up on what I said before, I started playing progear again for fun (while streaming :D) and I've been losing my first life/using first bomb stage 3. And then stage 5 ruins any boss attempts I have.
I've been studying through the beginning of your run today and the two gem streams you trigger in stage 1 are intense. I can tell you naturally have the last stream where I still struggle with it as bolt/rivet. By the end of stage 1 I'm lucky to have 1.2mil.

You even have a tiny stream going before the train in stage 2, not to mention the super risky train stream. And of course the end of stage 2 is always a mixed bag for me too.

I try not to delve too deep into your runs because I see all these scoring opportunities that halt my progress on getting to the 2nd loop. I'm also considering relearning the game from the ground up with ring/chain since it seems much better from a scoring standpoint.

Regardless, keep up the good work you should have the forum record in no time :)

Thanks man! And hey I already added you to my followed people on twitch (saw your post on shmups), so I'll be stopping by! :D

my god.

the M2 Battle Garegga release is amazing

M2 please do all the things

please please please do M.U.S.H.A.

Keep at it!

i will try it, i have been leaning on the hyper beam to shred bosses

So Compile Heart owns all the rights to the Aleste franchise, why are people expectingM2 to do MUSHA?

While at one point D4P owned all the rights to Compile's IP catalogue (save for Puyo Puyo which was bought by Sega in 1998), they were sold back to Compile Heart in 2010 (http://www.compileheart.com/news/?num=20101028) and have since then been prety dormant I guess?

I don't know the specifics but from what I've been told, the D4E/C.Heart deal was a more informal "you have permission to make new games using Compile IP" and not an actual transfer of ownership.

D4E didn't 100% own every Aleste game, some of the later games and offshoots like Spriggan were partially owned by other companies, so no one entity had 100% control over the entire series.

M2 has had the Aleste trademark for a number of years now and they've been hinting at new projects concerning Aleste over the last several months; I believe this'll be a new game for 3DS and not necessarily a re-release or compilation but by all accounts they have been working behind the scenes to consolidate the rights to all the various games including MUSHA. There are several people at the company who worked at Compile back in the days so there's some sentimental value there as well.

Spriggan was codevelloped with Naxat Software, under the lavel Naxac, so it was a shared ownership of the brand.

Did the people who left Compile in the 90s to form 8ing/Raizzing turn into M2 or something? Because Compile's shmup devs went on to create Millestone, which to my knowledge, still exists

Kaga Create, the company that absorbed the old Naxat stuff, had claims to MUSHA and the two PCE Spriggan games (as well as Recca and some other vaguely-related STGs). They went under about a year ago and the inference from some of the stuff I've heard since is that a couple different parties were trying to acquire those particular games but I really don't know where they ended up.

Beyond that, I think Super Aleste was a grey area and Power Strike 2 was 100% Sega.

There are Compile people all over the place and M2 has adopted a few of them--the guys I know of worked on pre-MUSHA games as well as contemporaneous games like the Game Gear games and Power Strike 2 and so on.

The Milestone team was all relatively new hires--pretty much just the people who made Zanac x Zanac, I think.

Danmaku Unlimited 3 is going to be one of, if not THE top shmup of 2017. It will definitely blow any other game's soundtrack out of the water this year (Maybe not Nier). That includes AAA titles.

I don't follow closely enough to the scene, but I'm glad they're putting out another one. DU2 was one of the bunch that got me into the genre.

Steam generic controller support doesn't seem to be kind to the HRAP4 Kai. Has anyone else tried it? The farthest I can get is having the remapping available, but the stick doesn't function regardless of what I set.

Degica put a trailer up for the DARIUSBURST 8ing DLC trailer up.

The ships look to have a decent amount of mechanics this go around.

I'll try to promote this stuff.
Made a thread for it and went ahead and linked to the other DLC packs and described just what these add. DBCS is an incredible game and well worth the cost of admission. Huge and it keeps expanding. Hope I can get more people on board and stoked for the DLC since it flies under some radar.

Be realistic. M2 really does not do PC outside of a tenuous port of an obscure fighter. They have always worked on platforms. Would be nice but perhaps something more grounded.

They've done a bunch of visual novels for PC as well as ports to and from NESiCA which is essentally a PC platform.

Releasing on PC shouldn't be a problem from a technical perspective, the issues are mostly logistical: they're looking to crank out PS4 STGs pretty regularly and can't spare the people to handle PC ports, and if they self-publish they have to manage customer service issues in English which is a whole separate burden.

Maybe Bullet Soul? Some of 5pb's non-SHMUP games were already released on Steam.

EDIT: ... or Qute's Ginga Force? All their other games were already published by Degica (JUDGEMENT SILVERSWORD, ESCHATOS, etc)

Used to, you could have replaced "M2" with CAVE, Qute, Triangle Service, or GREV. I don't think it's that un-grounded since , like you said, they already have a game on PC and they already have Battle Garegga running on PC.

I'm more hoping for Ginga Force myself.

Not a fan of Ginga Force. Battle Garegga would be great, but yeah I don't know if I expect M2 to jump into PC development right now.

I don't know what this will be. Could it be a new Cave port despite them not mentioning Cave?

I ended up trying every character in Caladrius. Some quick notes.

- Using the element shots early and often is the key to both survival and scoring. Survival because dealing damage with them builds up your ether gauge (bottom left) to earn chips that let you upgrade (and even re-spec) elemental shots between levels. Scoring because killing enemies with them builds your multiplier. The regular shot has neither of these benefits.
- Some element shots fire your regular shot at the same time. This lets you deal extra damage, but tends to negate the two above benefits of using element shots. Remember which part of the shot is which.
- Don't forget that every character's defensive element shot cancels bullets in some form or other. Some of them are very hard to use, but others are almost foolproof.
- Destroying certain enemies and boss parts makes orange fragments drop. Fill up the middle gauge with nine of these to get a 1up.
- Beat the game with at least two characters to unlock custom element shot loadouts (but to open it up fully you will need to beat the game with every character). Now you get to try to break the game to your heart's content.
- Don't forget to try synchro mode, which lets you play a two-player game where 2P is mirrored and also invulnerable. It's hilariously unbalanced, and also lets you see all the unique dialogue between all two-character combinations (solving what I call the Castle Shikigami problem).

Character choices:
- Maria and Noah are good for beginners due to very effective crowd-clearing attacks. Maria has a powerful frontal shot, but Noah can instantly wipe out whole mobs with a very fast homing laser.
- Alex and Lyris have more power while still having good range, but you need to get up closer to use their most powerful attacks. Lyris has a directional regular shot that's very flexible but basically destroys scoring potential.
- Kei and Sophia are more technical, growth characters that require you to be carefully positioned and max out upgrades to realize their full potential. Kei feels very hard to use because his gauge drains fast. Sophia's gauge drains slowly and has a defensive shot that makes you nearly invincible for basically free.
- Caladrius and Lilith are high-power characters who drain gauge very quickly, with weird shot patterns that are hard to use.

Whoever was the guy who did the modelling work for these 2 ships in DBCS did an amazing job. A lot of love went into these models even though they knew people wouldn't be able to see the amount of detail they put into them.

Seems the same person is handling Battle Garegga and Soukyu. These ships are super detailed compared to the other ones in the game.

Here's a gallery for the rest of the ships for those interested.
