Horizon Zero Dawn | Cinematic Trailer

This is a full fledged RPG...I don't get the Far Cry/TR nonense at all. It looks nothing like them.

I wouldn't go that far. It has RPG elements like a lot of action/adventure games like to have. It's not an RPG. It's more of an open world Uncharted with skill trees. A third person Far Cry is a good example actually. Looks amazing though. I'm excited.

Looks absolutely amazing... it is games like this why I bought a PS4. Well, well done Guerrilla. Not just another Killzone game.
And thanks to this thread, I knew better than to watch the whole thing.

It seems to me the gameplay structure is very similar to Far Cry, so it will really depend on how well they will execute it. If they manage to make the world feel very alive, the combat feels really fun and varied, and also manages to make some side-quests and events looks similar and as interesting as some stuff that happens in Witcher 3 or Red Dead, that could be really really good.

But it seems there's not much they can tell. We might have to wait the reviews to know if they will succeed at it.

The trailer had a shot that lingered on Alloy's ass for .06 seconds longer than my internal threshold will tolerate. I'm clearly not the demographic this game is aimed for. Sadly I will not be buying it.

Is this post serious?

Looking so awesome, can't wait to just wander, gear up, and tame some robodinos!

Romance with ripped leader woman please.

It's a parody of a Nier Automata demo thread post afaik.

Edit: or was it GR2?

Is the Trailer spoiler ish?

It's a story trailer that shows quite a bit of the story and what to expect. Take that as you will. I watched it once and I thought it was not too spoilery, but opinions differ.

No. It's an RPG. With dialog choices and skill trees and crafting and side quests to flush out the lore. I don't know what more you want to start calling it RPG.

Far Cry has skill trees, crafting and side quests. Is it a RPG?
Ps.: Not saying this game isnt (besides it does looks more like an action game with RPG elements to it), but those elements don't necessarily defines an RPG nowadays.

This game is anything but Farcry. If it's anything, it's a western rpg just like the witcher.

so the developers don't even know their own game when they say Horizon Zero Dawn is an Action RPG?

Ok next time they should ask gaf what genre their game is

Let's not discuss if this is an RPG or not. Because what the fuck even is an RPG.

First half of trailer: 7/10
Second half: 10/10
It was a good trailer overall, but it could be better. Really loved this part:

I want this robot to be a gigantic boss fight , god of war style but bigger

You are wrong and wholly mis-informed.

I don't mind the "open world Uncharted" comparison. I hope it's true, and it's a much more focused and shorter experience.

Imagine going through all of the awesome environments they showed in this trailer in 15~25 hours, instead of 100. It would make for a much better game, imo.

The "open world RPG" formula is exactly what could bring this game down to me, and the reason I wasn't excited at all before this trailer.

Alright, what makes Witch 3 a RPG and this not?

I edited my post. I'm not saying it is not an RPG, but crafting and skill trees doesn't define a RPG anymore... Far Cry is clearly an action game, even though it carries these elements.

Witcher 3 is indeed an RPG. And even though it's hard to define such a thing today I feel like Witcher 3 is MUCH deeper in dialogues, choices, side-quests, itemization (potions, weapons, trash items to sell, many different weapons with many different levels, the skill tree is much deeper, your level cap is high, and so on...).

However I'd say Horizon does seems like closer to Far Cry than Witcher 3 other than the 3rd person perspective. I could be wrong thoug, the game is not out yet and it may carries much deeper story and progression elements compared to Far Cry... I'm really just comparing it cause that's what I fear the most about it.

Looks beautiful and I'm looking forward to the battle system, but

"The massacre... was only the beginning"

"all we can do is pray to the goddess"
"no, prayer wont save us, we have to find the killers"

"from the depths, I will raise an army. a storm of shadows"

"What is it?"
"The end, or how it begins anyway"

"there's so much more to discover... before the world ends"

I thought this game had the best writers from The Witcher 3 and New Vegas. So why are all the bits of dialogue cringy? And it's not just this trailer. Even the reveal had "there's a storm coming and I... I WILL be ready"

Not really, "just" some people who worked on it. For example, the fact that one of the guys they hired worked on the Bloody Baron quest made some noise a while back, but he wasn't a writer, rather a quest designer IIRC. The "best writers" for TW3 are still in CDPR (eg: Jakub Szamalek, Karolina Stachyra).

killzone lore was great. it's the story that was the problem. they had so so many interesting things in the background and chose the most boring of them to make games about.

Fair point. I probably didn't notice much of the lore since I didn't give a shit about the stories. :D

In any case, the story seems to be shaping up decently from this trailer as well.

You played horizon? It has dialog, choice, side quests, many different weapons, with different levels.....non of these things far cry has. You have no idea who in depth these things are in Horizon, they have new vegas devs and RPG industry vets working on it. It has different settlements with different tribes, quests.....

I don't see why this trailer and the previous one which are the most impressive ones don't have 2160p quality like with the PS Meeting one. Is the PS4 PRO version not ready yet?

This is what I'm worried about the most.

Game still looks fantastic, tho.

Yup I've seen enough. My Pro is ready for this day 1. Everything they've shown from a gameplay/visual Standpoint has impressed me. Story might be weird, but who knows.. Killzone actually has a pretty great story/lore that was all over their website, but GG never let it be fleshed in any of the titles and part of that I feel like will translate a lot better in a RPGish game like this.

No, I haven't played it. That's why I asked in the previous page of this thread an interview / text that specifies the gameplay elements about the game, cause I can't have a nice idea of the gameplay structure based on the videos I've watched.

I would be HONESTLY very grateful if you could provide me some video(s) and hands on detailing such things you're telling me. Cause based on what I've seen this seems similar to Far Cry when it comes to gameplay structure, and sorry, but that doesn't cheer me up about it cause I'm sick of open-world games with such shallow structure. And the reason why I'm still not convinced is because this kind of issues in open world games rules the current industry with very few exceptions.

Again, I'm not saying this is the case of Horizon, I just want some material that convinces me that this game is much deeper and a safe bet to place my money on.

The developer says it's an RPG, shows that it's an RPG, but you're saying it's not an RPG.
It definitely is one, just an Action RPG, which will be light on visible stats and resistances, even if it will have them to some degree.

The game’s theater presentation also showed the scope of how personalized the weapons and other gear can be in Horizon. Each of Aloy’s weapons can handle multiple ammo types and have modification sockets to further specialize combat style. Even her outfits can be swapped out or modded to get better stats for the type of enemy she’s expecting to face. For instance, one outfit might help protect her against the corrupted machines.

Skill tree, advanced crafting and outfit/ weapons customization with even sockets, resistance to adverse effects (unknown if elemental/ dmg type resistance), side quests, dialogue wheel, mounts, lore, factions, quest hubs, etc.

I don't care if it's an RPG or not as long as it's good.

Do we know if there are hunts quests? something like in FFXV?
Yeah

Hunter Challenges
Hunter trials are a way for you to test your combat skills. In the city of Meridian, you will find a hunter's lodge for elite, big game hunters. However, you can't just walk in them; you have to prove you're worthy, so representatives of the lodge are set up around large herds. If you complete their tasks successfully, you gain experience and receive medals that allow you entry. Once in, you can work up the hierarchy of the lodge. Guerrilla compared it to a "hunter's guild."

Hunter Challenges show players various ways they can interact with the machines using the different weapons at their disposal. For instance, we saw a challenge that required using the ropecaster to kill three Glinthawks (flying hawk-like machines) in three minutes for the highest medal. This is no easy task, as tons of other machines are all over the battlefield, making it difficult to use the ropecaster to pin down a Glinkhawk without having another enemy impede our progress. Hunter Challenges are for those who want to learn the ins and outs of combat and test their skills with specific weapons. It was one of the most chaotic proving grounds that we saw.

Those visuals are INSANE, it looks as good as U4 only in true open world and scale, game looks so promising but I never liked a GG game, please be good.

Just because they have deliberately not shown many of those systems in depth does not mean they are not there. In fact, Witcher 3 also kept a lot of it close to chest before actual release. If other Witcher games did not exists I would have thought that those systems are going to be shallow as well. Having said that, Horizon does simplify things compare to things like Witcher. GG has admited that. It leans towards action part more then other action RPG. But when a developer says it's RPG nonetheless I don't go "no, you're wrong about your own game."

Ride that fucking hype dinosaur, baby!

Faces still look kinda weird to me, though, like they're too smooth? Most, anyway.
