Xenoblade 2 Announced (Not XCX, new sequel to XB, ACE music, 2017)

So Nintendo of America is advertising this game as a 2017 game. There's no way in heck that it releases in North America this year. I don't even know why they'd get our hopes up.

You don't know how long it's been in development, so you can't really say either way.

question how well do these games sell?

I mean must be well to get sequels greenlit but I always thought they did poorly.

As a game, I'll take Xenoblade X over Xenosaga Episode 1 and 2 any day of the week.

Xenosaga III, however... that's a tough call. I felt that was right when the series finally found its footing and balance, but it was right when they realized they had to start wrapping everything up ASAP.

But Xenosaga II's battle system continued to give me nightmares.

Xenosaga II's combat system derailed me from finishing the Xenosaga series. I loved the first one.

I'm worried that this will be the Dark Souls 3/Twilight Princess of Xenoblade.

"Safe" sequel after a divisive entry that is "Good" but in every way suffers from creative sterility by being a rehash of the last game everyone liked that's too afraid to take risks because a few experiments in the previous entry weren't received well enough.

I'm happy for this to exist, but after all the world building in X, I really hope we get a follow up to that one. The mystery of Mira, all the alien races and so forth was getting super intriguing right when their stories ended.

Could be the Link to the Past of Xenoblade.

Honestly, it doesn't look nearly as much like Xenoblade as X did, at least from what little we have to go on.

Nintendo is probably okay with eating some costs to ensure having their own "jrpg" in a way. To give the console diversity appearance. Switch seems to get getting a decent amount of jrpgs though.

They already did a pretty dang good job of commercially killing Paper Mario and Mario Luigi so yea....

My jaw dropped when the trailer came on. I loved Xenoblade Chronicles and it's easily one of the best (J)RPGs I've ever played. To see an actual sequel is just too great. I don't even care about the anime look, GIVE IT TO ME!

Was really hoping to get a sequel to Xenoblade Chronicles X.
Didn't enjoy the first Xenoblade Chronicles so was really wanting Monolith to stick more to the XCX type of game. But maybe as more trailers come out I'll like what I see. Either way I'll probably at least try the game when it releases

I would rather as equal to xenoblade chronicles x with more Sawano, but I'm still going to preorder this.

I with Afterbirth+, Setsuna, xenoblade 2 and others. The switch is looking really, really good.

To fans of the first XC: is there anything in the new trailer that shows it's a direct sequel (in terms of characters/locations/story)?

I have an unopened copy of Xenoblade Chronicles 3D that I want to play a whole lot more now that I know a sequel is coming, but I just wonder whether it looks like it'll have any connection to the upcoming game.

Damn, if this is the Twilight Princess of Xenoblade I would be so happy. That's my favorite 3D Zelda game!

I didn't see anything. I mean, I saw Nopon, but that doesn't mean anything since they were in X.

It's pretty much only the title that implies it.

Uhhh PLAY XENOBLADE 3DS!!!

It's only the best Jrpg of all time. That's it. I saw some loose connections to the trailer, the world looked somewhat similar. But it looks like it's a pretty new thing, new characters.

But seriously. PLAY XENOBLADE.

I wonder if they will change the combat system, I personally like it, but if I recall correctly there was a quote by one of the developers who said they wanted to make it more action-based for X, but couldn't for a number of reasons.

The few names that popped up were all new, aside from Vandam/Van Damme/Vandham/whateverhe'scalledinEnglish. And like Yarb said, Nopon, but those were also in X.

I'm personally hoping they make good on that desire to change to action-y battles, as long as they don't halfass it.

Hah I'm the opposite the first Xenoblade is one of my favorite jRPG and Xenoblade Chronicles X was just completely forgettable.

Besides the art style change I'm looking forward to see how much of a sequel it is.

The final shot of the trailer is a pretty direct reference to one of the most iconic images of the original Xenoblade. However, it looks like the game will be featuring a completely new cast of characters. It likely will take place some significant amount of time after the first game, and it might not even be on the same world. So my early bet is that it will be a new story that newcomers will be able to easily get into, but it will have a lot of references to events from the first game in it. Who knows, it might even reference stuff from X.

Ah, ok. So some loose connections up to this point. Thanks for clarifying!

Haha, it's been sitting in my backlog for months! Now that I'm done with Pokémon Moon, I've been debating whether to play XC3D or Bravely Default. I guess I'll get started on XC and keep my eyes peeled for new info on XC2!

It would be very cool if they were connected in some ways. Even small references go a long way in these situations. I'll have to play through XC3D in preparation for the new one!

There were some vague connections, but it will definitely have more. We already got X which was a totally alternate game, so the fact that this one has 2 instead must mean more than just a spiritual successor.

I enjoyed XBX,despite not being the sequel I wanted. There were major, major flaws with it, but I spent 90 hours with the game and really grew to enjoy the world.

But this is what I really want, despite the.. questionable design, especially of the main character. ACE being back at least means I will 100% enjoy one aspect of this game, regardless of what else there is.

Give me, give me.

Everyone talks about how awesome XBC is and it makes me sad I didn't enjoy it. I tried to push through the game and hoped it become enjoyable after awhile. But after playing for several hours I just couldn't make myself play anymore. Which is weird because normally I love a a good story which is the reason most people say it's such a good game.
XCX just clicked with me though. Played for 250 hours and loved every minute.
Monolith creates amazing games and even with just the short trailer we saw I'm hyped to give XBC2 a try. (even if the MC's pants look really awful)

Saw this pop up on the livestream and immediately got excited. Gonna have to get a Switch before the end of the year.

I should probably try to finish X but I'm at the part
right before the quests to get the flight pack
and the game just feels like a grind cause I've explored everything I can but I'm still a few levels behind

I might maybe sorta kind of hyped for this. Just a little. >.>

I liked both Xenoblade and Xenoblade X, so I'm happy with either style to be honest. Plus, the portable nature of the Switch with an RPG of either style is <3

Xenoblade ended in a way that could make the sequel have literally no connection until whatever point they want to add a connection.

I expect we won't know why this is called Xenoblade 2 until like 70% of the game.

I am down with the new style. This was one of three games that spoke to me VERY strongly. It means that I will most certainly be grabbing a Switch, but not until they start dropping. On a related note, I will be pretty damn surprised if this drops in 2017 (as many people have already said). I think the best we can hope for is somewhere in the middle of 2018.

This does not look good. I especially don't like the change in art/design style.

Unfortunately, that is how this sort of thing works. Some people will love it, some people will hate it. You can't please everyone. I think this is a great look.

I am a little bit disappointed that Kunihiko Tanaka is not returning as a character designer, especially because his rendition of Shulk and Fiora was fantastic. Also because I think his art style would be better suited for cel-shading.

That being said, I am glad to see Tetsuya Takahashi and Monolith Soft experiment outside of their comfort zone. And I actually like the red-haired female as evident by my avatar. >_>;

The steampunk/sci-fi style, along with the airships reminds me a lot of Skies of Arcadia.

Wanna know what would make this better? Replace mechs with customizable air ships and awesome air battles.

I'm thinking since since this wont have all the online features that XCX had and they are using the same engine, it might be the reason this game is planned for 2017. Must have been started development during XCX.

It's interesting how Nintendo is credited as the studio, not Monolithsoft. Monolith have been a Nintendo subsidiary for years now, but it's always been credited.

Im gonna miss Welcome to New L+A

I don't mind those online features going, since it was pretty barebones and slow..

In any case, I'm excited to see Xenoblade 2-9.

Dark Souls 3 is by far my favorite souls game. Let's hope you're right!

What world building? It was trash. TatsuTatsuTatsuTatsuTatsuElmaisahotalienTatsuTatsuTatsuTatsuTatsu.

It was an excellent premise i give you that, people mostly remember it for the wacky ending

Damn, that would really disappoint me if true. Happy to give whatever Monolith comes up with a try, but I really dig the sort of real-time, position relevant turn-based hybrid thing they've got going.

The only things I'd change is making each character class unique again, and dropping mechs (which I love, but were boring af in combat).

On the subject of dropping mechs - that could explain how this is possibly a 2017 game. From what I understand, balancing the scope of the world around two different levels of scale was a nightmare during the development of XCX.

bleh really not feeling that trailer

also thought X did pretty much everything that I actually cared about from the first one better so not so keen on it going back to chronicles

ah well still good to hear and i'm sure i'll play and enjoy it anyways at some point regardless

probably not till a while after it comes out though, really don't want to buy a switch just for one game

The character design backlash is people being mad for the sake of it.

We are no longer in an era where you can exploit low geometry to release stuff like Xenosaga III (which was a fine compromise), so at that point either you go full realistic (and it often looks embarrassing in Jrpg without the dollars) or aim for generic cartoon style. I mean, they couldn't do it right 1.5 out of two times on decade old hardware, so.
