President-elect Donald Trump met with Martin Luther King Jr.'s son to discuss the civil rights leader's legacy.

Martin Luther King III said that he had "a very constructive meeting" with the president-elect and touched on how he hopes to be a "bridge-builder" to help the country "become a greater nation" moving forward.

He praised the work of Rep. John Lewis, the Georgia congressman and icon who marched with Martin Luther King Jr. at Selma and other key civil rights protests.

Martin Luther King III did not criticize Trump directly, saying that in the "heat of emotion, a lot of things get said on both sides."

"The goal is to bring America together," King said in the lobby of Trump Tower this afternoon.

Trump's incoming press secretary, Sean Spicer, announced on Twitter that the president-elect would meet with Martin Luther King III today, as the nation observes the federal holiday honoring Martin Luther King Jr.

Senior transition sources initially said Trump would visit the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C. But, ABC News later learned that the visit was removed from his calendar due to scheduling issues and had not been fully planned. Spicer said this morning that the president-elect was never planning to go to the museum today.

"He was never going to Washington," Spicer asserted on Fox News. "I think what he was trying to do was find an appropriate way to celebrate and observe Martin Luther King's birthday. He is going to meet with a group of individuals today, including Martin Luther King III to talk about that legacy and celebrate the birthday of Dr. King."

Trump tweeted Monday morning that we should honor Martin Luther King for being "the great man that he was!"

"Celebrate Martin Luther King Day and all of the many wonderful things that he stood for," Trump said on Twitter. "Honor him for being the great man that he was!"

The meeting comes after the president-elect was criticized over the weekend for sparring with Congressman and civil rights icon John Lewis.

Trump attacked Lewis on Twitter after the Georgia Democrat told NBC News that he wasn't attending Friday's inauguration and that he doesn't view Trump as a "legitimate president."

This is very interesting. I've attached the video interview and it seems MLK III is trying to bridge the gap especially with Trump's statements on John Lewis.

Didn't see a thread on it, if there is another mods please delete. Thanks!

One of MKL's kids is a major right-wing hack. Is this guy the one, or am I thinking of someone else?

Good, I hope that meeting was constructive. It'd be nonsense to say that King III betrayed his father's legacy by meeting with Trump.

I personally don't want to bridge the gap between myself and hateful bigoted people, but your father was a great man

Doesn't matter to me. I don't care who you get with Trump. This is optics, nothing else. I see right through this.

Trump don't care about civil rights.

Trump's intentions are questionable to say the least, but MLK would've done the same thing. I mean, he met with LBJ and he was racist as you can be.

If this is anything like Trump's other celebrity/politician Trump Tower meetings, Trump will announce some major anti-black legislation sometime within the next two days.

God I wish folks would stop playing themselves by going to Trump Tower. You literally accomplish nothing. Not a damn thing, other than making yourself look fucking stupid. And that goes for MLK III too.

So I'm guessing Martin Luther King III didn't learn anything from what happened after Decaprio, Al Gore, etc. met with Trump? Or the nomination of Sessions? Or the biography of Trump's entire life? It would be nice to think something positive will come of this but let's be real here - we know who Trump is.

If we have to deal Trump, might as well get people in there to talk to him and try and convince him he should be working on certain things in certain ways.. Hopefully this meeting was constructive, and Trump learned from it.

It's all lip service and PR for his brand until Trump actually puts forth policies that reflect this 'bridge building' or, at the very least, shut the fuck up and not say something offensive within 48 hours.

Neither will happen.

Alveda is a pro-life activist and voted for Trump:

I pray that all polar opposites learn to Agape Love, live and work together as brothers and sisters—or perish as fools. While I voted for Mr. Trump, my confidence remains in God, for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Prayers for President-elect Trump, Congressman Lewis, and everyone including leaders.

Exactly.

When will people learn. Whenever Trump makes a show of someone being invited to Trump Tower, it's usually someone who runs counter to whatever negative shit is hounding him in the press.

We just saw this with fucking Kanye and Steve Harvey.

Y'all are getting nothing out of these "discussions" but played for a fucking photo-op.

This is how Trump wins. Because for how dumb he is, all I can do is sit back and marvel at all the people I once respected who show themselves to be even dumber.

You know damn well that dude ain't learned shit.

fucking Bannon. all this circus stuff is Bannon's doing.

he is playing the United States using its own worship of breathless reality culture against it. Lee Atwater who?

They normalize him and thats literally it.

Meeting with Trump must be weird. I have a feeling he just blows sunshine up your ass the entire time. He seems like a guy that's only willing to talk shit when he's got a screen or some distance between he and anyone else.

Trump don't care about civil rights.

Yeah, I really don't give a fuck if Kunta Kinte himself rises from the grave to meet with Trump.

See, it feels like MLK would play the game and actually meet with Trump if he was around now.

It'd be a hell of a meeting though.

Most, if not all of MLK's offspring are pretty trash. Half of them are fighting the other half on rights to monetize and profit off of his estate and memorabilia.

Shame that it had to end up this way.

Somehow I doubt Trump would've signed the Civil Rights Act into law.

Only because you have the power of hindsight on your side.

Johnson was a guy who called the original civil rights act a "Nigger" bill. Lets not act like he was far away from Trump when it came to racial issues.

He will be back to criticizing Lewis in a few days.

I'm starting to actually believe Trump is a master manipulator considering how is able to tell everyone exactly what they want to hear while meaning none of it.

He sets up his controlled environment PR stunts and people lap the shit up that comes out of his ass.

One of his daughters is a massive homophobe who frequently allied herself with the worst of the white evangelical community back when the gay marriage debate was at its fiercest. That's probably who you're thinking of.

Maybe they wouldnt have to fight over memorabilia for money if your countrymen didnt make their father risk his life so that you guys could treat blacks like actual people?

If they are trash what does it say about the rest of Americans?
