Protesting the Inauguration of Donald Trump

This.

He has been democratically elected, Americans have to respect that and try to win back in four years if they're not happy with him.

I wonder what the reaction would have been, had Ms. Clinton won the election and republicans decided to protest.

Yeah, it's not like Republicans have a history of doing the same thing...

(can't bring myself to say President....)

Anyway, in the other thread, I mentioned that on Friday my mom is going to work dressed in all black (as a show of mourning) and refusing to watch a single minute of coverage, which is a great idea. Can't give that guy ratings! I've considered doing a blackout myself. I chuckled when she told me she was going to work in all black, but now I may actually do the same, lol (in addition to the coverage blackout). I need a black dress shirt though....

Anyway, I'm sure many others will be marching or protesting in other ways. So how will you be protesting the inauguration of our next *gulp* president?

edit: OF Some rich asshole >_<

I can't bring myself to say it either, to the point where I installed an extension on Firefox to change "Donald Trump" to "Some rich asshole." It works like 95% of the time and my browser is much slower now because of it, but it's worth it to not see his name nearly as much as I was.

Lol another spin in the "both sides are the same". Awful.

I won't watch his innaugeration. The parade of horrible people he appointed to cabinet positions along with how just plain despicable people like Paul Ryan are has really disenfranchised me from anything having to do with his presidency. I can barely stand to read the Times everyday, but I force myself through it.

2 years of his immorality and stupidity before Americans get the chance to make his job as difficult as possible. Hopefully at that point they'll be enough Dems elected to impeach the orange fuck-face.

I never watched an inauguration in my life and I don't think I'll be starting now. I have better things to do to watch the self-loathing news outlets coverage of it.

Saying protests aren't doing anything is literally ignoring the reality of the fact that we currently have the GOP shitting their pants so hard that they're running out of meetings with constituents over how pissed they are.

Everything in protests to Trump, Congress or otherwise is simply a reminder to the GOP that while the fact is they are in power, there is no mandate and the people certainly are not taking things lightly. Calls to senators, calls to congress, boots on the ground, the net effect is the same. Saying otherwise is silly.

It's not just a message to Trump or Trump supporters, though. It's collectively a message to all fellow Americans, many of which Trump and his inner circle have directly targeted over the course of the last eighteen months, that not all of America supports this administration. Hopefully the message will reach other Americans feeling afraid and vulnerable right now.

I honestly didn't really have any plans to join a protest this weekend and now I'm feeling a sense of shame for not having any.
Where are you at? You've convinced me lol, we can go protesting together

Civil protest is a cornerstone of any healthy, functioning democracy.

Lol another spin in the "both sides are the same". Awful.

I know right? I wouldn't care if republicans wanted to protest Ms Clinton on her policies (if they actually knew them) but democrats sure as hell need to protest Trump for his racism, sexism, bigotry, etc etc

I disagree.

A narcissist like Trump hates any attack on his image. And when we see side-by-side news on Friday of Trump being sworn in with a window in the corner of hundreds of thousands of protesters screaming & booing simultaneously less than a mile away, it'll send a pretty powerful message.

Yeah, Trump likes to take all the powerful messages so seriously. All he will do is write another embarrassing tweet, but I guess he will do that anyway.

Let the little man write his tough guy tweets while he cries himself to sleep every night because even as president nobody that matters likes him.

Protesting ain't gonna do shit anymore.

Protesting publicly is super important as a way to let your allies know they're not alone and to stoke the energy around opposition to Trump. And Trump is unique in how easy he is to bait into doing stupid shit by any display of opposition. But that all really only applies to public protest more than little private things like showing up to work in black. Protest is most important in how it plants the seeds of organization, but that requires it be a group activity.

And of course, none of that replaces calling your representatives and showing up on their townhalls.

Fun fact: Even in a democracy you don't have to accept the results and lay down&shut up. You can still say: Fuck that. You don't have to respect shit.

I'm doing a Trump media blackout, but not really consciously. I just feel ill when I watch the fucker for even a second, it's an instinctual aversion. I'm in permanent denial. I bet I won't watch him do anything even once over the next four years.

yeah, good thing his presidency hinges on his television ratings

The sad part is, for Trump it actually might actually impact his behavior.

He has been democratically elected, Americans have to respect that and try to win back in four years if they're not happy with him.

1. Democratically elected* (*- with a whole lot of meddling from foreign powers.)
2. Respect is earned, not given. You can respect the office without respecting the office-holder in the same way you can support the troops and not support the war.
3. Well, Republicans spent 8 years stonewalling and delegitimizing Obama at every turn, and made it a point before he even took office to gum up the works so he'd only have a single term. so... you do the math.

People protest shit all the time. Regardless of if you believe he won "legitimately" or not, people don't want to stand for the values he represents (or lack thereof).

If millions of Americans stand up against what he represents as a person and a president, I think it will have a significant impact whether it be immediate or years down the road (when we vote in the midterms and in 2020).

This is an incredibly short sighted perspective. And comparing this to "if Hillary would have won" is a perfect example of apples/oranges.

You could also make the argument that the way we elect the president needs to be changed, but that's another can of worms.

Protest are fine, but I don't see their efficacy in this instance. But if you wanna do it, do it.

I'd rather take the .0001% chance and also keep my dignity than do nothing at all.

Nope. Will not respect that man ever. He has done nothing to earn it. You think Republicans respected Obama? Yeah right.

Comparing his win to a Clinton win is laughable, a woman whom spent most of her life serving the public. Trump has pussy grabbing, potential ties with Russia, racist and prolific rhetoric, taking away insurance, and a shit load of other things following him. Hillary had ummm emails I guess...

Of course we'd be upset if people were protesting her but that's their right and we couldn't do anything about it as they can't stop Trump protestors.

I'm probably still going to watch the inauguration live. History is being made, for better or worse :/

Why even protest at this point? What are you protesting?

Protesting ain't gonna do shit anymore.

That's not how protesting works. Do you think all manners are fixed just by going on a march?

A protest is a symbolic gesture intended to motivate people to enact real change. A protest means nothing if you go out and march and then go back to your couch and pat yourself on the back.

There is always a reason to protest because there is always something that can be done to enact change and better our lives as citizens. Protesting gets people motivated and helps reinforce that their voices are heard. It helps people sitting on the fence to actually get active and participate in local government.

Yeah, worked great for Hitler and Nazi Germany.

No protests here, so I'm donating to the ACLU to fight his unconstitutional bullshit.

I like this. I'll make my donation on Friday.

I cannot stomach any coverage of this orange clown. But I won't just lie down and do nothing about it. I voted and my choice lost, but I will still fight for what I view as right.

And you just know it pisses Trump off that there are people not worshiping the ground he walks on. Almost makes it worth it just for that alone.

Very curious how the "don't protest! same sides! it doesn't do anything!" get so uptight about it in the first place.

if protesting doesn't do anything then why do you care if it happens or not?

I wonder what the reaction would have been, had Ms. Clinton won the election and republicans decided to protest.

Obama was democratically elected with the popular and electoral votes and Republicans spent 8 years decrying that he was illegitimate (Non-American Muslim!) and stonewalled anything he did.

Trump lost the popular vote by close to 3 million and only won the electoral vote by like 70,000 in an election where a lot of shady shit has been going on from Russia and the FBI (considering how little Trump won by... anything was enough to give the slightest push...). Trumps picks are going to harm a lot of people (the rich, white, Christians the least though). If there was any president who gives cause to protest, it would be Trump.

Lol yes there's that too. Imagine if the majority of attendees at his inauguration were protesters, he'd never get over it.

I'm not respecting anyone who calls me a criminal drug peddling rapist

Trump can choke on my balls

I don't have to do shit but stay black and die

I'm thankfully working Friday so I won't be watching the clown show. I like the wearing black idea, so I might do that.

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. Just installed it and am enjoying the many different name choices, such as "The Ludicrous Tangerine Ballbag".

If there's no "Lock him up!" chant then I'll be very disappointed.
If settle for "Trump's a chump!".

More curious to see the protest than the actual inauguration. Will probably call up a stream at some point.

My particular Canadian area has seen nary a protest, but if they were, I'd be out there.

Whats up with people NOT watching the inauguration ? This is akin to Obama's inauguration, when many I know said "Fuck that socialist Obama, I don't want to listen to anything he has to say"

It feels so one sided to me, very "us against them". While I do think Trump is a piece of shit, not hearing what he has to say is pretty ignorant.

Nah, it means not give this piece of shit that will rather see me separated from my family or dead more attemtion to his fucking hate speach talking mouth. dont compare this racist turd to Obama.

For me, ratings. I'll listen to what he says, but not live. His TV exposure good or bad is what got him there in the first place, I'm not adding to that.

This. If Obama had to sit through years of his citizenship being called into question (Trump himself being one of the main instigators) and his family being called every racist name in the book, Trump can handle some people booing at his inauguration.

Anybody who wants to concern troll about "respect" can miss me.

His idea of outreach to black people during his campaign was saying that our lives are so shit, that we had nothing to lose by voting for him anyways. Damn straight it's me against him. He has already made it abundantly clear that there is absolutely nothing of value for him to provide in political discourse.

It's more so that I'm not interested. And let's be honest, we already know him through and through because he doesn't have a thought that he doesn't tweet. There's nothing he's going to say that you couldn't see coming.

I've gotten a year and some change of what Trump has to say. He hasn't shut up. And the difference between Obama's "socialist" rhetoric and Trump's actual offensive opinions on Muslims, black people, women, etc. is well documented. If he says anything that isn't his usual incoherent babble, I'll see it on the news by the end of the day. Otherwise, I don't have to listen to him and that choice doesn't make me ignorant nor does it create an us vs them divide when Trump and his entire agenda and cabinet are singly about the disenfranchisement and marginalization of an enormous swath of Americans.
