So Nintendo is getting in on that "but replace X" meme that has been showing up on YouTube recently. They should do it for that "We're Number 1" song too but maybe they're a bit too humble for that.
Just...what the fuck.OK, so, it seems I'm wrong..
http://www.tweaktown.com/news/55877/nintendo-switch-online-chat-requires-smartphone-app/index.html
This article interprets that the headphone jack on the Switch itself has no Voice Chat capability and that everything would be using your existing headphones/headsets through your smartphone.
So, I guess, Switch sends the game sound to your phone to send to the headphones/headset along with voice chat using data? I can't wait until my phone rings and my game enjoyment and chat is interrupted by a phone call or I miss a call because I don't hear call sounds on my phone due to an app suppressing them.
Maybe they should do more than read, all it would take is single PR rep to post "Hey guys, we'll give you more details on the phone app in the future, but rest assured, you can do basic match-making and send messages to people on your friends list from within the console".
And the shitstorm would be over.
Amazingly, this pisses me off the most.
Thread title: Switch matchmaking and lobbies handled through phone app.
Reggie's own quote: "The smart phone app that were creating, that will be part of our online service, we believe is going to be a very compelling part of the overall proposition because thats how youll voice chat, thats how youll do your matchmaking, and create your lobby."
"...phone app...that's how you'll do voice chat, that's how you'll do your matchmaking, and create your lobby"

Email their customer service and tell them you're a shareholder. When I did that, I received several responses within the same day. Don't be an asshole, though; give them a thoughtful, well-written explanation of your concerns. Chances are you won't learn anything new and they'll only allay your fears with corporate rigamarole, but at least they can send it up the ladder to someone who might see it and can make a difference.
It's amazing how industry standard features seem to be a big deal and worth bending over for this app bullshit for people who have been stuck in the Nintendo bubble.
What about kids that don't have cellphones tho?
Even if that's true, shouldn't we be able to message friends directly from the console? The Wii-U had that functionality.
Reggie knows exactly what he is saying here and is carefully choosing his words (and his spin). People need to accept reality. You guys are living in a fantasy land of denial.
I love seeing some people try to play devils advocate for the dumbest possible shit.
"Most people have smart phones"
Stop.
Now this is just silly. No parent is going to hand over their phone to their kid for an extended period of time, lol. Especially if it looks like the kid is playing something already.are they orphans or do they have parents?
if they have parents, this comes in conjunction with the parental control that nintendo has put enphasis on
(they will use their parents phones)
If you go to PSN's website, or speak to Shu, he's not going to only bring up the phone app. If he did that, one would logically believe that those features were exclusive to the phone app.
Their website only mentions the phone app. Reggie has only mentioned the phone app. Reggie has also referenced how the phone app is a superior solution, more "elegant" solution to traditional gaming implementation of things like voice chat and lobby management. I don't need the Hardy Boys to crack this case and figure out what's going on here.
Brought this up to a friend and he said "why would I ever need voice chat on a Nintendo console?" Mentality like that won't get anyone anywhere, coming from someone who is always group chatting on PS4 with me and other friends while even playing single player games.
What I'm getting from this and from Nintendo's website is that the smartphone app basically works as a replacement for OS party chat and matchmaking/scheduling. In game online features will work as each game allows, like how MK8 and SSB4 have slightly different matchmaking and in game chat features. This is strictly a replacement for OS functions.
This is a feature that was not present on the Wii U at all. While this is a ridiculous solution, surely it's better than nothing at all?
Is anybody reading this the same way I am?

lmao, so anyone that doesn't have a smartphone or doesn't have one handy when they are playing is SOL and can't play online or anything?
AND you have to pay nintendo money to simply use it on top of this?
Nintendo needs to learn the Kiss rule.
Keep it simple stupid.
It makes absolutely no sense to require users to have to whip out a phone to use multiplayer on a game system. It's just red tape and another hoop to go through that isn't needed at all.
Now having this on TOP of it? Sure, if people want the added use of their phone for whatever, but requiring it? Absolutely stupid decision imo.

The fact that THIS is their solution with a NEW console is what's baffling to everyone. Sure, having the functionality exist is better than nothing, but in this clumsy way, it's just disappointing.
Shu isn't pushing a new hardware platform with an "innovative" app feature (their perspective, not mine) being central to their marketing message.
Question; if you select a matchmaking hopper on the switch screen, then while the matchmaking takes place, the app displays the open slots in the lobby, and the players filling them, while the main screen is free for other use, does this not only qualify as being what Reggie said and also totally reasonable?
DeNaMan what happened to Nintendo.
Lol you can probably use tablets but that doesn't make this better. Are we sure it's just Smart phones or could people use other hand held smart devices like iPad or other tablets.
i mean, people are assuming that you need the freaking phone on your lap or something.
maybe it just need to be syncronized or something.
on the parental video, bowser can see how much the kid has played, and it doesnt have to be near the freaking switch

Yeah I remember the first time I tried to make jokes. It's what apple fans do every time a new iphone is shown off
what the fuck are you not getting? what reggie's talking about is custom private friend lobbies/chat/match-making. Games with online play, like MK 8 Deluxe coming out in April will not require an app to be used in order for players to get grouped in to a lobby for online match-making. the thread title, despite what the article includes, very clearly sets out to say that even the most basic of online play and random online matches in any switch game will need to be facilitated by an app rather than in-game, software level.Thread title: Switch matchmaking and lobbies handled through phone app.

Man what happened to Nintendo.
I don't disagree with that but I think some people think this applies to every single possible online gaming situation on the Switch, so we desperately need some clarification.
If there's one thing you can count on with Nintendo it's absolutely terrible messaging.

How is that not worse than how it works on other consoles, though?
But why at all.
Unless you're playing with a bluetooth headset, you need the phone to be close enough to connect to it.i mean, people are assuming that you need the freaking phone on your lap or something.

any regular GAF poster knows full well that is absurd and untrue and it's borderline irresponsible to title the thread in such a way

You need a second tablet to matchmake games on your tablet. Amazing.
