Reggie: Switch matchmaking and lobbies handled through phone app

You need to take a headset with you when you take the switch on a trip? You would have the phone with you anyway.

Open the app and set it on a table next to you, and have voice chat. As long as it's one option.
This would make perfect sense if inline mic earbuds didn't exist.
Or the console had a microphone like the ds or 3ds has.

Why would anyone in their right mind want to use their phone to chat while they're playing a game if the system supports headphones with a mic?

I'm expecting the other companies not to charge me to pay for online play, but they're doing it so I can't blame Nintendo.

I haven't seen the full details to say they haven't gotten the bare minimum right.

I don't give a single fuck about Nintendo charging people to pay games online. My problem is that, for some stupid reason, they're tied simple communication features to that paid service, and you need to use a phone app for something that has absolutely no reason to not run natively on the system. Until they go back on that decision, I'm perfectly fine saying they haven't gotten the bare minimum right, because they haven't, and there isn't a single good reason to make excuses for them.

Correct. You won't be able to chat or create lobbies, but you will be able to play with randoms online.
Ok it's all good with me then as long as I don't have to use the app since I have no plans to get it.

Not that it matters anyway since I also have no plans to pay for Nintendos online "service".

If I can't use one headset for game audio and voice chat then this is a really stupid idea.

Having to get my phone out, plug my ear bud in, start the app and have it running all the time is not more elegant than just connecting my headset directly to the console.

What happens if you have too many apps open? What happens if someone calls you? What happens if your phone goes dead mid game?

This is one of the stupidest ideas ever.

In conclusion. Nintendo should've already detailed the fucking online from top to bottom. If not, tell Reggie to shut his damn mouth until they're ready to fully talk about it. Because the way he talks makes it sound bad.

So for the same price as Sony and Microsoft's online service, I get the abilities to use my Smartphone to talk to people while wearing headphones to play my Switch games.

Fucking awesome job Nintendo. Time to retire the hardware and become a Sony/MS Dev.

That's a nice opinion you have there. It'd be a shame if someone... Disagreed with it.

I mentioned that I'm not out to defend this idea or try to persuade anyone that it's the best thing Nintendo could have done, or the best solution. But I am rather keen to try it. It's rare that I use voice chat on PSN or XBL, and on the occaisions that I do, I'd certainly be more than willing to pull my phone out of my pocket.

And you are correct. PSN does have an app that compliments what the console can do. Now that I think of it, 9 times out of 10 I use the app on my phone to send messages to my friends on PSN, and will glance down to see who's online if I can't be bothered to suspend my game.

Relegating several social and networking features that have hitherto been OS-bound to a smartphone app sounds pretty snazzy to me, especially if it runs well and the UI is slick and easy to navigate.
I love whenever something as asinine as this comes up someone always goes "well I never used x feature anyway."
Im sleeeeeeeeeeeeep 💀
LUHMAO

.
Yes Reggie, I take my bulky gamer headset with me literally at all times.

That is also matchmaking, and now you start drawing arbitrary distinctions. If the software can matchmake, it can matchmake for friends too.

It remains to be seen whether the friend list can be managed/accessed through the console or if it also requires the app.
Wouldn't be too hard for Nintendo to only allow games to do random matchmaking and then, if you're in a party, all your friends are automatically pulled.

That actually is the only thing unclear here, as they say on the website that the app helps you "connect with friends" and (further below) allows you to "invite friends to play online" (and this one is bundled together with the app exclusive features like voice chat).

So I didn't read 33 pages of posts, but has anyone posted the horrifying realization that there's a large possibility that an OS update to phones could easily brick this app until Nintendo sorts it out, thus almost entirely gimping the online service you're paying for?

Bingo.

Games are not going to depend on an app to handle their matchmaking to their own servers. That's not how this shit works, it can't even work in this way unless Nintendo are wizards.

I would be legitimately impressed if Nintendo found a way to program an OS with online that ONLY allows you to matchmake and set up games through a phone and actively prevent games from including friend list matchmaking like MK8 and Splatoon.

I would be frustrated and probably angry as hell, but still impressed.

They never said the price.

I don't know whats more surprising; the fact that Nintendo are pulling this shit, or that people are actually eating this shit up.

So in other words, you can't play Mario Kart 8 Deluxe online with friends until summer.

..Yeah, still terrible.

almost assuredly not. you'll still be able to see if your friends are playing and join whatever room theyre in. the stuff that wont be there till summer is creating private party chat lobbies with switch friends and then launching in to a game from there while maintaining a chat channel during play

yes, also agreed, but shame on zombie james

That's a separate purchase for some people. Also you don't know that inline mic earbuds don't work with the tablet.

Man, that's some strong mental gymnastics.

And aren't phones separate purchase? Phones that in 99% of the time now come with the same inline mic earbuds.....

It's not the entire online service. It's out-of-game matchmaking, lobbies, and dedicated voice chat.

What Nintendo has said suggests you'll only be able to play with randoms without the app.

I don't think that's true. If you go to the online services page for the Switch, the first paragraph tells you that the app "helps you connect with friends for online play sessions."

Further down it says that the app will "let you invite friends to play online, set play appointments, and chat with friends during online matches in compatible games─all from your smart device."

This all suggests the app facilitates play with friends, not that it's required. I do think it will be required for chat though.

We don't know the price or all the features yet. That's really the problem. Nothing has been demonstrated, so people assume it's clunky and terrible.

Hmm? I need to take the Switch with me on a trip? I mean, that's the problem here and where this logic all breaks down. It ain't the headset that's the limiting factor here. If I somehow have space for the Switch where I'm going and can lug it around, it's an easy matter to sling some 'phones around my neck.

Unless we're really going with the "not everyone has headphones" thing. In which case... you know... Not everyone has smartphones? No matter which way you go with this, you run yourself into a hole.

I don't see how Nintendo deserves the benefit of the doubt in this situation though. What have they done with their online infrastructure in the past 10 years that would even give people the impression they're going to do the right thing here?

For example, you go to this app and setup "8:00 a.m to play Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on June 15 to friends".

How about you wait and see like the rest of us? They've had a free service for the longest. I'm not going to complain about a free service. The paid service will be free for awhile. You'll get to see if you like it or not before fall. If it sucks then don't get it.

So basically in order for my portable console to work in MP I need another mobile device to get voice chat, matchmaking & so on.

So this means as a parent, if I buy my kid one of these things, I also need to provide another smart device to allow them access to MP?

Wow. Just wow. I eagerly await the confirmation about there being no web browser on Switch after hearing about Netflix.

A mobile device that potentially lacks basic mobile functionality (browser, Netflix app) AND requires a second mobile device for others is a really compelling sales proposition to me as a parent.

The thing is that Nintendo knows there is no breakibg point for the diehard fans. They can forcefeed any shitty service or general annoyance they want into their platforms and charge and there will still be hundreds of thousands of people who will carry water for the decision and continue cheerleading for them just so long as they keep pumping out new Mario and Zelda.

They are the model of hubris.

At first I thought the design choice was made on account of the tablet not being comptable with data plans for on the go but that is negated by wifi spots all over the place.

This is all very bizarre. I think maybe we'll have a better idea once they have the Direct discussing their entire online model.

What? Is this for any game with online multiplayer or is this just for private/ friend matches?

Like in Splatoon on wii u I'm just thrown in with randoms and I play the game. Can I still do this without the phone app on the Switch?

Regardless, why the hell is it not just done through the console??

Apparently you can play with random people just fine. But you will need the app if you want to play with friends.

As to why it's not being done through the console, I imagine its because of the joy cons. They can be played in multiple grips and thus make it impractical to plug a headphone jack in it, particularly if some online games will heavily use motion controls such as arms for instance. Furthermore, I think they want to ensure that voice chat stays consistent when transitioning between docked and undocked mode. That and they want to save up on power.

Thinking about it from this perspective, the only real alternative to the app is a bluetooth headset.

It is still stupid but I'm trying to find out why they would even entertain an idea such as this.

As if that's different from any kind of fandom.

People are tripping out over this, but it doesn't seem like that big a deal to me...and i'm not even gonna buy a switch.

We are already accustomed to tethering devices to our mobile phones. Over of the main reasons for doing that is because it minimizes the processing that needs to handled on the peripheral device. Think smart watches.

In the case of the switch, it's primarily used for playing games. But anyone who plans on using it for mobile online multiplayer is probably already carrying a device that's superior for text input and has decent audio capabilities (A cell phone) . Why not tap into that and minimize the drain on the Switch's battery?

How would you escape all reverb and echo picked up by the phone mic from the Switch speakers without a headset/headphone?
What kind of phone would have such a good mic that it won't pick up a ton of background noise?
Also better bring your phone charger with you if you want to do some on-the-go switch multiplayer.
