Reggie: Switch matchmaking and lobbies handled through phone app

Every Switch owner will also own a Switch too.

I get that, but I think the idea is to not have online play and voice-chat UI encroach on Switch's user interface. Have all of that cleanly consolidated on a separate thing that everyone already uses.

The only online game I play is FFXIV on PC. All voice-chat stuff is handled separatly, outside the game via teamspeak. Maybe if Switch came with a headset and a mouse and keyboard outta the box, that might have been a feasible option.

I'm not saying what Nintendo is doing here is objectively better or the right decision. As someone that admittedly mostly plays offline though, I'm not convinced this is bad.

Has anyone considered the possibility that your headphones and all chat functionality connects through the Switch, and you only use your smart device to find/join friends and groups/lobbies, which is immediately synced back to the device? Why is everyone assuming you'll be using your phone and Switch audio simultaneously?

At worst, you need to have a smartphone. At best, you already have one and have a potentially slick and fast way to search friends, join lobbies, parties, and be on your way.

Either way both sides seem overblown until we actually see how it works.

I'm not even getting a Switch at launch, but this behavior is nonsense. Over the past week or so, I've read all kinds of false information about the Switch, like people claiming you only get one Joy Con Controller for $80, and that the Wii U version of Zelda BotW was superior to the Switch version, and now trying to claim the games on Switch won't have any online matchmaking without a phone app?

This is getting stupid beyond anything ever seen, even from fanboys. When Microsoft was gonna bend us over and make us connect to the net in order to play Xbox One, and eliminate used games, that backlash was justified. Not this type of Russian fake news of propaganda and lies.

Why all the hate? Because Nintendo wants to make a system that is different from the triplets we have now? Without Nintendo in the market, all we're left with are big budget games that take a decade to make, focus on graphics over content and have little creativity or originality.

Do we really want nothing but bro games and cheap indies, remasters and annual rehashes? Give Nintendo a fair chance is all I'm asking here.

The Nintendo Defense Force is out in numbers, so I expect some googly eyed blind-faith silliness...but this is pretty impressive...almost performance art. Lol

"People like using their smartphones for everything these days right?"

- Nintendo executive

Okay, if it's an option that's fine but not if using your phone for simply looking for games is the only way.

I dont know if this has been said already but not every mobile carrier can do data and voice at the same time. I know for me if I take a call while on my sprint phone the internet is not available. So what happens when you get a call while playing?

The 360 introduced a lot of things, some good some bad. With the release of that console, gaming took a turn and some of us didn't like that direction. It released a pandora's box of micro transactions, focus on online gaming and shooters.

I don't see why Nintendo should carry the torch for a direction that Japan doesn't want to go.

The Switch is marketed only towards Japan? And Japanese games don't like online?
My dude you are drinking the koolaid.

The app should be able to keep running just like most smart phone apps when you get a call, you can prob mute yourself on voice chat or keep talking, I have been online plenty of times where people were on their phones and talking over voice chat head phones at the same time
No, what if I have to take the phone call. You say you have heard plenty of people do that while on voice chat, but never with this setup.

lol I been saying this the last few pages, but hey people dont want to wait and see the full info, this is how misinformation spreads, Reggie giving half info

At least everyone is judging based on 100% complete info. Would be embarrassing otherwise.
exactly.
This is straight from Reggies mouth. What do you expect of people?

because he did not say anything like "only way machtmaking works is with the app for your smartphone". We just don't know enough right now. He just highlighted what the app can do. If this is optional and you can do all that also on the switch, which should(!) be a given, it will be awesome. but we can't celebrate that just yet, because we don't know.

if it's really the only way, I wonder if they cut the matchmaking features from mario kart 8, and yes then I'll be angry too.
I'll still keep my pre-order because Splatoon/Zelda/Fire Emblem and Mario
.

It's just...we don't know the whole picture yet. We can only say "if it's optional, it can be great" and "if it's not optional, it can/will be shit"

Yeah, it's dumb of Nintendo to do that, but it's not the end of the world like Sony and Microsoft fans are making it out to be.
We're all out to smear Nintendo because we have nothing better to do.

Sony and Microsoft fans, working together in unison in online forums to take down little ol' Nintendo.

COLLUSION!!!!!

This is straight from Reggies mouth. What do you expect of people?

The words from Reggie's mouth did not explain the full breadth of the online functionality.

I expect people to not freak out when they only know a portion of the info they are freaking out about.

Man too many are living in the moment and getting riled up from others. Wished Nintendo set this shit straight from the presentation where all eyes were on them.

Nintendo is at fault, but once they announce the full details (hopefully before the damn launch), then topics like this won't matter at all. Topics like these make people want to cancel their preorders...

Yeah, but that teamspeak software is on your PC. It's not like I download Discord on my Switch or something. Making it a separate device just makes it a more frustrating user experience. And I'm not exactly sure how a party applet clutters up the whole UI, that doesn't even make sense.

This is bad. Objectively. It may not directly affect you because you don't care, but then it doesn't negatively affect you for it to be included either, now does it? This decision does nothing to help those that don't care and everything to frustrate the many that do, so yes, again, objectively this is bad.

No, what if I have to take the phone call. You say you have heard plenty of people do that while on voice chat, but never with this setup.

Then you take the call, I doubt its gonna kick you out your game, you would just lose voice chat prob. It would be like you muted the sound, or you can keep the app running in the background paused.

IDK this is just a basic assumption how it should work.

lol I been saying this the last few pages, but hey people dont want to wait and see the full info, this is how misinformation spreads, Reggie giving half info

If you play Splatoon you have to switch between your phone and your Switch every 3 minutes only for matchmaking. What if you want to mute somebody during a match?

That's what I said. I said it'll probably all come through the Switchs audio meaning the voice chat and game audio.

Nintendo bubble at its finest. They might as well not have made it at all, I could already do this with Discord, Skype or any other voice chat application.

The article clearly says "that's how you'll do matchmaking". It could possibly mean that in addition, but that is pretty clear cut to me. You can't expect people not to be angry at a long time Nintendo rep saying this either way. There's no guartenee that there's some secret meaning or whatever.

I think this is my favorite gif now.

Yah I just jumped to the end because quite frankly reading some of these overreactionary concern-troll comments in every single Switch thread has becoming daunting. This seems like a pretty obvious way for the system to work -- I doubt Nintendo expects people to be using two audio sources (Switch and smartphone) at once while on the go. It makes no sense otherwise.

I'm sure full details will be ready to be released in the near future. It's clear the entirety of the service isn't ready to be shown yet, with the "full release" being later in the year, but some people are just foaming at the mouth to take a huge shit on it. Nintendo news really brings out the worst in some.

Oh no, people do aren't buying into a system the day it comes out, what ever shall we do about this tragedy... Maybe give them the fucking information they want and go back on dumb decisions while we still have time

Like I said I think the app syncs to the console, and you dont always have to go to your phone for features to use, that would make the most sense to me.

I brought up Teamspeak to highlight that it works well with equipment that PC gamers already invest in. It sounds like Nintendo is trying to eliminate the need for a gaming headset with the Switch, and keyboard and mouse don't seem to be part of the equation whatsoever.

Let's wait and see what the full info is rather than calling something "objectively bad" based on incomplete tidbits of info.

I don't get "UI and more slick" angle.

Now I have to pause the game, get another device, look for the app on said device, start the app, look down on my phone away from the screen to invite friends,

When all of this would be just a click away inside the console. Zero problems with how consoles have done this already, it's not a problem and it never has been. There is zero reason and incentives for Nintendo to go this route, it's mind boggling.

Like I said I think the app syncs to the console, and you dont always have to go to your phone for features to use, that would make the most sense to me.

But then you shouldn't need a smartphone app at all, if you have the functionality on the Switch.

This is so divorced from any semblance of usability, that I can't even fathom how bad it will be in aggregate. It's so ridiculous that it won't surprise me if the matchmaking function of the phone app ends up displaying a twenty-digit number on your phone that you then have to enter on the Switch in order to connect to your game.

I'm just gonna say this because I actually agree with your stance that this is kinda dumb, but man you need to calm down. Not everyone who disagree with you is somehow laying out some kind of defense force or accusing you of some kind of character assassination of a corporation (is that possible?) They're simply just commenting that you and guys like you seem to be a bit too emotionally invested in being angry about this.

Tranquilo man. Just relax.

Man it would be amazing if Nintendo held a conference explaining all the features the OS on their new console would have..oh wait.

When the ps4 and xb1 were announced, the OS was demonstrated on both showing what it can and can't do and that was almost 6 Months before release. NINTENDO has a little over a month and we are still in thr dark about their online services and OS.

Maybe if Nintendo, I dunno, clarified this shit instead of supposedly being coy, people wouldn't have to "foam at the mouth", especially people here who have preordered the system. Not everyone is shitposting - there are genuine concerns for a product they bought or plan to buy.

Nah.

But let's not pretend that both don't froth from the mouth at the idea of Nintendo as a 3rd party on their consoles. So the forum dwellers/warriors will definitely push that agenda.

Not that's it's totally unwarranted in this case, mind. Until we get further clarification.

I brought up Teamspeak to highlight that it works well with equipment that PC gamers already invest in. It sounds like Nintendo is trying to eliminate the need for a gaming headset with the Switch, and keyboard and mouse don't seem to be part of the equation whatsoever.

What does mouse and keyboard have to with any of this?

How do we voice chat when the console is docked though? Wireless headsets only? Super long headset cables? There's only a headphones port in the main unit, none in the controllers (not even the pro controller). Seems like the phone app is their solution.

I mean, we are entering the age of the cabled headphones dying off. The new iphone only supports wireless headphones. Blue tooth headphones are all obviously wireless.

Yeah, it's dumb of Nintendo to do that, but it's not the end of the world like Sony and Microsoft fans are making it out to be.

Of course it's not the end of the world, but this is neogaf, it's our job to dissect everything and throw hyperbole around.

Preach!

We don't even know how this thing works yet guys. Chillax.

But not on the console and through the app. Again, beyond stupid.

You know Nintendo could still have built in voice chat through the console and still makw their games right?

My friends and i who all own a ps4 were interested in the switch mainly because of great games like Smash Bros, Splatoon 2, and Mario Kart because we were excited about playing them online with each other while being in a party chat lobby just like we do on the ps4.

What we all thought was going to happen when we first hear Nintendo was going to charge for online was that it would have a similar built in party chat client like ps4/xb1 do where we could plug a ear bud like mic the ps4 ships with and play those great games talking and joking amongst each other. I guess Nintendo doesn't see it that way.

Nintendo could have just made a powerful console to match PS4, skipped the HD rumble and portability, kept discs, copied virtually everything the others have. I know a lot of people really wished they'd done this.

I'm really glad they didn't do that, personally. I have my PS4 and Xbox One for big AAA games, online multiplayer titles like Battlefield 1 and so on. To me the Switch is refreshingly different, and offers what hasn't been done before for those that want something else.

I think Nintendo could have done a better job explaining this feature. Like help us understand why this radically different approach to the online experience is better suited for the Switch. A simple announcement trailer would have been good. Like how they have conveyed to the consumers clearly that Nintendo Switch is home console that you can take it to go. Maybe I spoke too soon and it's actually coming.

How about you tell that to the people attacking those who are saying "let's see the full details" and they're being called Nintendo defense force fanboys. Even those who want to try to figure where Nintendo is going with this is being told they're "damage controlling".
