Horizon Zero Dawn | Cinematic Trailer

Bleh, I just hate Aloy's character design. She's so gross looking. Definitely need to wait to find out of the gameplay is good, because I am not going to enjoy staring at her the whole time.

I'm not necessarily crazy about her design either, but this is not the way to go about stating this...

It's her head. It doesn't look like a real person's head. I have some serious uncanny valley feeling when I see her.

Um...no? What's with people acting like I'm an asshole because I don't like a character's design?

The problem was the way you worded it. If you said you were put off because you felt it veered into uncanny valley, no one would have reacted that strongly. Also, what if she isn't a real person? What if she's actually a cyborg alien? YOU NEVAH KNOW.

Just weird to be jumped on for not liking a character design. I also find the whole game's art direction weird. It's like trying to be realistic, but the characters have odd proportions. Like how it is in the Witcher. Not a fan of it.

To the bolded: She is definitely a robot. It's even in her name - Aloy. Still, it doesn't affect the horrible uncanny valley feeling.

It really has to be said, if nothing else this game is just ridiculously good looking. If it plays even close to as well as it looks, it really will be something special.

What does this even mean?

Edit: Nevermind looks like you explained yourself, your wording initially was just awful though.

You know the head isn't supposed to be a real persons head...the game has a notable artistic stye, it was never going for realism like Until Dawn. The character is meant to look like that.

Aloy was never made to look like a photo realistic human. Wait for Death Stranding if you like that style of game.

Played some Horizon at the Taipei Game Show today. Liked what I saw, animations and movement were really fluid. The game really captures the atmosphere of being out in the wild hunting stuff down very well I think. I only got about 10 minutes, but taking down some of the enemies was really satisfying.
Graphically I wasn't really impressed, but then again I had to sit way too close in front of a shitty television. Can't wait to play this on the pro.

Aloy is weird the other characters in the trailer are really good imo

I'm just always against realistic designs in games, they never tend to work out and age badly. But this is the studios choice and their strength so I understand why things look like they do.

That part has been played multiple times before in other media. The combat is great, the player behind the video though is not. Watch GiantBomb Hitman videos and you will think the game is trash.

How are we passing off subpar hit detection, animation and awful sliding issues as user error and other non sequiturs like difficulty level?

That just looks mechanically bad; and if that's representative of how the game plays in the hands of someone who's not very good, it's still going to persist in the hands of the competent. In my opinion, it also aligns with how not physically grounded she looks running about; it's like she's floating above the ground.

The premise of Horizon makes me want it to be good, but man, there's so much that's naff about it, from the cringefest music to the poor dialogue, that I fear for its living up to expectations - especially if the gameplay is a bit whack.

It smacks of a developer's first and ultimately fatally flawed effort at an unfamiliar genre.

Ok, but how do you explain the glowing response to the combat from almost everyone who's had a chance to play this at trade shows? I've not seen any complaints about that stuff, and it's usually one of the most praised things people have about their experience.

Well, I can't explain it and hence, don't claim to. I take other people's opinions with a grain of salt; my standards, what I know to be good and what my eyes see are a better source of information for now.

Like I said, dig the premise, dig robot dinosaurs like it's nobody's business, but what I've seen does not inspire confidence. What I've heard? Different story, so I hold out some hope.

Blizzard does that sort of stuff (weird animations, etc) in their games in order to have the best gameplay possible and people praise them. I'm all for it, just to be clear.

What's up with the discussion of Aloy's look? I remember it's been going around Horizon threads for a while.

People put looks of characters so high up, I don't like many of the designs of Japanese characters and yet I'm not going around complaining about it and putting it above everything ells.

You phrasing was ingrained with sexism. She has perfectly normal proportions. Not every woman irl has the same facial structure like they do in games.

Some say "uncanny valley", others that "she doesn't really look human", etc.

I can't help wondering if in the end it's really about her not being a "babe" and more of a sturdy/ strong "girl next door" look GG went for, which personally I think is great.

Basically,

What they would rather see:

What they got (in a more boyish, "less pretty" version)

I won't fault someone for wanting a better/more pleasing design, whatever that means to them. The only people that really irk me are those that like basically everything about the game, but decide to not bother with it because they don't like how Aloy looks, or take issue with playing a female character to begin with.

Wait, which one is it? She's not meant to be realistic, or she is totally realistic?

(Also, I never said that every character HAS to be realistic, just that I don't like it in this game, like I also don't like it in the Witcher with Gerald's weird body shape).

Like this, it makes me feel a little sick, it's just off.

Yeah it's cool. Just speak for me. It's not like my favourite games are full of awesome looking women - Zarya is one of my favourite characters ever partially because I follow olympic weightlifting and partially because she's a huge fuck off Russian woman with a giant gun.
I have always played FemShep because she looks great and the voice acting of FemShep is fantastic (pretty sure it's the same actor in Saints Row).

It's kind of ridiculous that an off-hand remark about not liking a character's art design has made people go "SEXIST!" It has literally nothing to do with Aloy being a woman, but everything to do with her weird face.

You think a face in Mass Effect looks great but can't stand the faces in Horizon? Am I living in some bizarro world?!?

Maybe because this particular shot transports the emotion of desperation and fear? Could be totally wrong.

Edit: Hm, her ears are a bit strange, so far down. But i will not care when im busy hunting robots.

That's the thing. The Mass Effect faces look like cartoons. They don't give me that uncanny valley effect because they aren't close enough to people in the first place.

Hmm. It can't be helped then. You're going to have a tough time with a lot of games from here on out.

Isn't God mode enabled?

That would seem to throw off how animations would usually play out. I think you're dead if you get tailed whipped like and it would completely stop the animations of her swinging her spear or rolling. I think you're analyzing way too much here man, the gameplay should be fine, it's pretty unanimous with everyone who's played it, including people not from the press right here on GAF.

Isn't it just angles though? She looks completely normal in that Horizon watermarked pic up top to me, pretty even with the light reflecting off her red hair.

You guys are weird...I think she's pretty '-)

Aloy looks average in a lot of ways. She isn't huge chested, she's not tiny or towering over everyone, she's not jacked but by no means skinny and even her face is pretty but she's not made out physically or how she's designed, to look like a really hot woman running around post apocalyptic Earth. I like it because she's distinct enough to stand out but there is nothing so glaring or weird in her design to throw things off or distract in my opinion.

Could be. Doesn't really hamper my excitement nor do I dislike the design.
I'd give Bethesda that award.
I feel that Fallout 4 was better in this regard. Bioware just inched out over Bethesda tho.
