For those who refuse to game on a PC, what holds you back?

Bunch of liars in here man.

I play primarily on PC... well.. used to anyways. I have my PC directly connected to m TV, wireless Xbox controller installed, steam big picture mode.

All of you saying it's seamless are a bunch of damn liars.

1.Turn on computer
2. Oops forgot I switched out of big picture mode last time
3. Get up, find mouse and keyboard, put steam into big picture mode
4. Sit back on couch with controller
5. Pick game, fuck it needs to be configured for a controller
6. Look for wireless keyboard and mouse because I don't wanna keep getting up, find it.
7. Mouse falls off lap table while typing with keyboard
8. Dig in couch for mouse
9. Keyboard falls off while looking for mouse
10. Find both, configure game with controller
11. Windows wants to update
12 steam overlay isn't working because windows update icon is "Infront of it"
13. Click update later.
14. Game starts
15. Configure game
16.reconfigure game because it may have low FPS.
17. RECONFIGURE AGAIN because you lowered too many things
18. You must restart game for changes to take affect.
19. Hit pause on controller
20. No quit option, find mouse and keyboard to ctrl alt del out of game
21. Restart game
22. Start playing game
23. Windows fucking restarts while playing
24. Play PlayStation while windows figures it's shit out.

There gentleman, is the truth of PC gaming on a comfy couch.

LOL - this is prettty good.

Starting with Voodoo 2 I loved building and tinkering with my PC to get the best performance. It was a big part of the fun. That is until adulthood realities got to me and I just wanted to play games. I got frustrated trying to get just-released Fallout 3 to run on my new 920 build and said "no more." I bought it for my PS3 and enjoyed my lower performing but tinker-free experience.

Quote people and engage them.

These shitty, vague attacks are embarrassing.

More than some of the posts here? They really aren't.

'i find playing pc games disgusting'

sure that shit is cool huh, surely "engaging" would create a worthy discussion

get off that high horse yo

Sit down at my PC to start a game, realize there's a Steam/driver/Windows update. While downloading/installing I read my mail, some news, watch a few YouTube vids. An hour later I realize the update installed 50 minutes ago and I've inadvertently procrastinated.

Which games? Also iirc PC gamers still cannot play Arkham Knight

wtf_is_this_shit_Very_Disturbing_Childrens_Book_RE_We_dont_say_ampquotGermanampquot_in_America-s400x297-59009.jpg

Of course you can now, don't be rediculous.

Though consoles have installations and patches now, it is still way more convenient to game on them than on PC. There is no need to check compatibility with your system, no tinkering in the graphical settings to get everything smooth, and only every once in a while you need an expensive upgrade.

PC gaming is just to cumbersome to me. I also asociate a PC with work, and it might seem small, but I really enjoy shutting my laptop and firing up my PS4 or Xbox for some downtime. (Yeah, I know, I surf the internet on PC too, but generally I do it on iPad when I really have my offtime, and PC surfing is during 'work hours' for short relaxing).

The other thing is that there aren't many experiences I like on PC I can't find on console too. I don't like RTS-games, so I don't miss out on those. Almost everything else that remotely interests me is available on consoles I allready own, so there is absolutely no need to invest in a PC.

I really don't think you have to. I don't, I asked around for friends to choose the parts and also assemble it. If someone doesn't have friends like that, they can use helpful Neogaf PC community to choose the parts for example. And let the shop assemble the PC. I assume that kind of service is available in PC stores outside of Finland too. But yeah, building a PC can be costly if you aim for a high end rig.

Well, it's more so that said tech-support requires at least a smidgen of hardware knowledge. One can't just say "My computer thing is acting weird" and have a tech-support guru handle everything, or at least not in my city where every place I buy a computer from either goes out of business or gets shut down by it's parent company without warning. You need to have some level of... independence (it's the closest word I can think of to what I mean) with repairs.

And yeah, If I go all in for PC, I want it to be the best. So no budget rigs that run slightly better than a standard PS4/X1/Switch, But ones that outperform PS4Pro/Scorpio/Nintendo8.

I'm curious if people saying maintenance have been on 10? I remember XP needed a nearly yearly reinstall, Vista got better but was pretty much consistently sluggish, and 7, 8, and 10 all seem to keep their legs just as long as macOS. In fact I saw less benefit from reinstalling 8 from scratch (before 10 was out) than I did reinstalling El Capitan fresh on a Mac that had been upgrade-installed since Snow Leopard.

And tweaking as a con? Well, if a game launches broken on console, there's nothing you can do, so tweaking can be a plus.

Me, I'm not PC right now because a nice 1000 dollar build in USD is 1333 in CAD is 1533 after tax. *cries self to sleep*

I could go lower of course, I could probably come within 150 dollars of a console, but then the upgrade isn't as dramatic and to me misses some of the point. I do want to build a PC soon though, because Doom and Overwatch don't feel as good to me on a console.

i'm all for people playing on whatever damn system they want, but i must say that many of the fears i see listed here sound like warnings from your neighbour's son in the mid 90s, which surprises me in a forum of people i'd imagine to largely be tech savvy.

i've had my current gaming pc for 3.5 years, it's still going strong. i don't actively like windows 7 but it runs fine. i have windows updates switched off, i can't remember the last time i had to update a driver, this pc has honestly never crashed on me that i remember. upgrading the graphics card last year took all of 5 minutes.

that said, if you prefer console, do you.

Honestly, all you have to do is read the PC performance threads on gaf to find there are quite a bit of these issues still happening in pc gaming. Some of the posts in the batman and unity threads required a network engineering degree to understand.

The longest time for me it was initial investmant.

If you dont have any components not even a monitor you have to put in alot.

Where as i bought my ps4 and wiiu for something like £600-650 together. About £300 less than i spent on everything for my pc.

So i thought whats the point when there arnt any pc exclusives interesting me and Ps4 gives me 3rd parties and first party games anyway.
😃😃😃

Ipretty much only play Overwatch tho lol

get off that high horse yo

You called people stupid, yet I'm in a high horse.

You engage with the people worth engaging, and ignore the others. People that make statements like "lol pc gaming more like spending hours in menus!" or "lol console enjoy spending more on one game than i do 100 games!" should be ignored.

Like, someone countered my rental argument with their own, and while I disagree, there was merit to their point.

well people like you are obviously not included in the "stupidity" part, that's a completely valid reason as are a lot of reasons posted here

but when someone posts 'playing pc games is disgusting" i won't waste my time arguing with shit like that and call that line of thinking stupid, cause, uh, it is.

no need to get defensive when what i posted was clearly aimed at the hyperbole bullshit posted in this thread

Might have exaggerated a bit, let's wait how it runs on a PS4 first (30 fps probably).
Any medium pc would be able to run it better 60 fps, maybe even 2k.

It's Sony 1st party, so what it would run on PC is irrelevent. :P

Plenty of us aren't that tech savvy. I wouldn't even change up the HDD in my PS4 because researching the SSD and mucking about to get it in the console isn't sufficiently user friendly. The N64 expansion pak is more my speed. The idea of building a PC is exhausting and miserable.

Let me buy a box I can plug and play. I don't care if it needs to update and install a bunch of data if that process just involves me pressing X a few times. I do care if I have to Google exactly what I need to download to get things working.

I didn't assemble my own PC, you don't have to either. For us who don't want to, out of laziness, lack of skill or fear of breaking something , there are people who will do it for us. And for updating games, I don't even need to press X since Steam downloads and installs the patches automatically. Graphic card drivers are also updated by a click of a mouse. And windows updates can be automatic too if you want to. Though I admit that I occasionally have screen tearing issues with some of my games, luckily I only googled for a solution once and it has worked for every game so far. But there are problems that need trouble solving on consoles too. We are still in a first month of this year, but I've had two different persons asking me for advice with PS4 network problems.

But by 'vague-posting' you throw a lot of people under the same blanket and people can't tell who you're referring to.

It's just a pet peeve of mine, I know you don't think 99% of the thread is stupid, but it triggers me, perhaps unfairly to you.

I don't want to think about problems like drivers. And I do not like to mess with graphics settings. Either my PC must be so good that I do not need to think about them and just play on max or I just get frustrated.

But yeah, maybe I will make the switch if Inhave a steady income. PC gaming is just cheaper (at least the games) and you have a wider variety of games .

You sound like the klutz on the "As seen on TV" product commercials that can't accomplish the simplest of tasks.

I do but only if the pc game has controller support. I know if I got used to m/kb I'd love it I just can't be bothered to take the time. Also, my gaming pc is from 2011 and to upgrade now, since I have ps4 and Xbone, feels unnecessary.

Edit: I also had a lot of experiences fucking with .ini files, settings, updating graphics card drivers (that sometimes didn't work requiring a roll back), regular hard crashes, and now that my rig is so old it won't run anything current so I'll have to invest at least as much as it would cost to buy a switch to upgrade it. I'd rather have a switch...and I don't really want a switch so I'm just not interested anymore.

Maybe if I buy some kind of virtually reality setup but until then I'm good on pc gaming.

Ermmm as big of a supporter as I am for PC gaming... Define medium. Because a 480/1060 is what I'd consider a medium level GPU. Basically I guess just take whatever you'd consider the pro to do and add a little extra juice for the 480 .Not counting Overclocking. But I don't really know how well they are Overclocking now. It wasn't that impressive at launch. Not compared to Nvidias TDP at least.

1060 with Overclocking you could probably add around %20-30 performance on top.

I'm just satisfied with having a Sony and Nintendo system for all my gaming needs. I'm a huge fan of both of their exclusives, and every third party game I want almost always comes out on either system. I also don't care a huge deal about graphics so buying a powerful PC (or even a PS4 pro) is not worth it.

Becoming outdated. Compared to the PRO and I assume Scorpio it is. I mean yes it still works great and everything but so does forward compatibility on PC games if we're going by that metric. I'm just saying I'm pretty sure we'll be into a new iteration/gen here in another two years. The Pro will take the place of the PS4.
That is simply not true. The PS4 isn't becoming outdated at all. Like I said, Horizon is coming out next month and will look gorgeous on the PS4. In what world does that in any way equate to somehow becoming outdated. All you are saying is that at some point in the future, the PS4 will be old tech which is a pointless statement to make since the same can be said about all tech. Get back to me when the PS4 actually is outdated and we can talk but that doesn't look to be happening any time soon.

It'll look 10x better on PC.
I truly hope my sarcasm detector is broken, because if you are being serious...Oh boy. I've got some bad news for you.

"With a pc, you can completely surpass the console experience!"

"Damn, that is nice! Say, can you recommend me some pc exclusives? Heard about 40 games were announced at e3....not interested in the side scrolling indies, strategy type games or MMOs."

Fair enough. Just a pet peeve of mine from way back in high school days when people on Facebook would do it constantly. Maybe it shouldn't be brought to GAF, but wew it sets me off.

I don't want to think about problems like drivers. And I do not like to mess with graphics settings. Either my PC must be so good that I do not need to think about them and just play on max or I just get frustrated.

Nvidia experience optimizes the settings for you on a click of a mouse, no need to tinker with those yourself. Unless you want to, that's an option ofcourse.

I hate Windows.

This. I've tried dual booting, so that I can work in a sane OS, and game on a Windows install, but then I spend time that could have been spent gaming waiting for Windows to update itself, or for Steam or Origin or Battle.net to update themselves.

It just works out better to have a second cheap (ish) device that is dedicated to gaming, available at the press of a button every time I step away from my office and settle in on the comfy couch in the game room. ymmv.

It's mainly down to cost and driver issues that puts me off PC gaming. Most of the games i play are available on the PS4 anyway, so i don't feel i'm missing out.

I like buying a game and knowing without any doubt, it will run on my console and won't run better/worse than my friend who has the same console.

It's convince, I want to just play a game, not have to put leg work in at times to find fixes for graphics cards or have issues and travel forums to find fixes in advance of patches.

Pop a disc in, play.
Download a PC game and hope for the best.

This ain't a dig at PC gamers and I know it doesn't happen all the time, but you can't say it's never happened.

I just ain't got the patience for it or the FOMO.

Just saying it's not true doesn't make it so. Recent PC games off the top of my head that are coming to consoles.
  • Path to Exile
  • Cities: Skylines
  • Ark: Survival Evolved
  • Killing Floor 2
I'd like to hear some of your "whole host of reasons" why you think successful PC games don't come to consoles since there appears to be a steady stream of them doing just that. As for console-to-PC games, you correctly contradict your own statement in the same sentence you make it. Platform holders make a large amount of games that will stay exclusive to the platform. Microsoft is the exception, but that's the exception that proves the rule and their game output has been shrinking anyway.

Since PCs don't have platform lock-ins, most successful games that can make the transition to consoles will do so. They have every reason to do so and none not to.

Well I mean lets just go through the ones at the top of my head: Antichamber, Sunless Sea, Company of Heroes, Morrowind and prior, Brigador, Towerclimb, Sethian, Euro / American Truck Sim, Torchlight 2, LISA, Thief 1 & 2, Insurgency, Mount and Blade, ARMA, OFF, Star Citizen, Pillars, Tyranny etc etc.

All could be adapted to a controller and have some game changes to make them work, but they don't happen. Whole host of reasons include, not wanting to pay for development or porting, not wanting to compromise the games functionality, wanting to adhere to the PC community and the user generated content, not wanting to compromise business models, game is too old / not worth the effort, developers have moved on or shut down etc

Edit: Actually completely forgot - Cities Skyline has been AWOL regarding consoles for two years now, and many of these games are pretty massively different to their PC incarnations. I really wonder if things like Team Fortress 2 should be on these kind of lists, where they have deviate so so so far beyond what is left on other platforms, that it is wonder how they can even be compared

How to play a game on a modern console:

(Console loads)
1. Unwrap game
2. Put in disc
3. Install (7+ hours for some reason)
4. Patch (hours)
5. XBOX NOT ONLINE
6. Make Sure it's online.
7. Play.

And on PC:

(PC loads ... in 1/8th the time)
1. Log in
2. Press "Play"
3. Play

In my experience, it is much easier to load a PC game. I tried showing my Dad some XB1 games a few days ago and the damn thing had to slowly download several 7GB patches after bitching about not being connected .. I thought Microsoft ended the always online requirement? Very annoying.

Don't get me started on how overpriced Xbox Live and PS+ are, which are needed for a bulk of the games also available on PC with better graphics/free online.

BUT to a consoles defense, the Windows UI could be fixed up to work better in a living room environment. Valve almost did it with Big Picture and that works for a lot of people, personally I think it's really clunky like 2001 Xbox style.

You sound like the klutz on the "As seen on TV" product commercials that can't accomplish the simplest of tasks.

Well that's the majority of consumers tbh.

Yeah, that's accurate for everyone obviously...It's probably best to just admit that the experience isn't always seamless, but that it's still a great option for a large portion of people.

*sigh* - seems like we have these fanboy wars threads on a weekly basis now.

People don't "refuse" to play games on PC, they just play games on whatever suits their boats. For some people it's a PC, a console, a phone, whatever. Just play your damn games and stop worrying about other people.

Best post here. Platform fanbois are gonna start going door to door soon enough to "preach the word".

Yep. It's ALWAYS like this. 100%. I admit that it's not as comfortable like a console but this is hyperbole.

1. Start Desktop (in other room, don't even go near it during the week) with WOL via Smartphone or iPad.
2. Start HTPC.
3. Turn on TV.
3. Pick Up Xbox One Controller.
4. Press Xbox Guide button to start Steam in Big Picture mode.
5. Play Witcher 3 via In-Home Streaming with no problems.

- Windows 10 never restarts when playing a game
- With controller companion you don't need a mouse
- You don't configure games every launch. Only once. In the case of Witcher 3 that is 5-10 minutes for the next 150-200h playtime.

I don't have a lot of time and I don't care about having the best graphics or anything like that so between my 3DS, Vita, and PlayStation 4, that provides me with far more games that I can play that I'll ever have time to actually play. If I get to the point where I play everything I'm interested in for these platforms, then I'll likely jump into the Switch or Xbox One before PC.

Biggest reason is that my friends and brothers play on xbox...and they are on xbox mostly because of halo. Even if those games come to pc (and they have and are) since there is little cross play it will never be something i can switch to. Also its the competitve aspect...i prefer controller for most shooters (most of what i play) and playing pc games with controller is a bad choice.

The platform issues revolving around cheating makes me very very unlikely to play on pc. Missing games like destiny make it even more unlikely.

but the biggest reason is I work all day on computers and even as a hobby when i get home. I want an applicance for gaming..something that just works and i don't have to mess with at all.

EDIT: As others have said the only positive to PC Gaming is graphics (no interest in mods as i mostly play coop or multiplayer games). And that isn't worth it.

Can I turn my pc and control it to start the game with only a controller?

Can I leave it in standby where all my games and the OS itself are always up to date, with no further interaction on my part and never have any delay whatsoever to play anygame I want?

Can I not be bothered to have the latest driver when a new game launches, otherwise it might have performance issues, and some times these same drivers causes issues with the game or even the system?

Can I have a unified system on pc to chat, party up and create gaming sessions with my friends without having to resort to other platforms to set everything up?

I have came back to pc gaming every now and then, but issues like that keep throwing me out, and until all those points are easily solvable I don't plan on giving pc gaming another try.

I used to be a huge pc gamer back in the days but i just can't deal with the troubles anymore.

Drivers configurations, updates, settings configurations, Windows fucking around... and on top of it is the exclusives. I love my PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo exclusives that will never come to pc + consoles are just easy to use for everyone in the family and friends, it's plug and play and has standards in controllers.

To me and i say to me, pc gaming is annoying other than the graphics.

*sigh* - seems like we have these fanboy wars threads on a weekly basis now.

You can't say they're no exclusives and then say three types of games don't count... even if you even take those categories out you still have way more PC exclusives.

I truly hope my sarcasm detector is broken, because if you are being serious...Oh boy. I've got some bad news for you.

I'm not even trying to argue that it's hardware that can't be used anymore. I'm saying from the metric the person I was quoting was using for "outdated". Something with decent forward compatibility doesn't really become outdated until it consistently can't play the games at an acceptable level anymore.

For me personally that's games that can't at least do 1080p 30fps consistently without dynamic resolution changes. But that is by no means the definition of outdated for many.

I lent my PS4 to my brother after I was done with Bloodborne (since there wasn't anything worthwhile to get) and he gave it back to me over the holidays. So yesterday I fired it up for the first time since BB release to try out Nioh and damn... after 2 minutes in the PSN I was already missing my PC.

It a crime to call something like the PSN a service. :p

Well, since you asked, from someone who spent their teens and early 20s hooked to a PC playing X-Wing, Civ, Quake, Counterstrike, you name it, starting on an overclocked 90hz CRT with an overclocked ps2 port mouse...

Logical Reaons

- my friends are on PS4, and I play less and less single player.
- i'm in my 30's and although many people seem to have consoles, hearing about people in this age group with gaming PC's is rare.
- I mostly play online social multiplayer FPS, i wouldn't be competitive on the couch with a controller if it was some kind of lounge PC setup attempt.
- i don't have time for strategy games any more, and honestly, I could probably just prefer to play them on my laptop if I did. Shouldn't need horsepower for strategy.

Feels...

- the gap between console and PC has become harder to see. For you, that might mean, 'why console any more' for me that's 'why PC any more?"
- i get tweaking and performance anxiety on PC, on console I just enjoy the game, as an OCD part of my brain switches off.
- I actually now prefer playing with a controller, again, even on multiplayer FPS. Mouse is a precise but somewhat silly to me as a control method in hindsight.
- i have no interest in having a PC cluttering up my lounge, and i think PC's look ugly, even the most high end minimal fancy lian-li
- time is money, and building and maintaining a PC is more costly to me in time than PSN Plus is in money.
- not a fan of windows, and Valves Steam OS (and associated Steam Boxes) hasn't taken off to the extent I would like.
- if anything, playing stuff like Grim Fandango / KOTOR on my iPad has made my PS4 look a bit cumbersome and inconvenient in comparison. In that way the switch appeals to me. So going back to PC would feel like the opposite trend. Even less compact and neat, and more tethered.
- Last I looked, gaming monitors are a ridiculous expense.

It sucks because with Windows, you have the speed, but the UI isn't there.

on console, the UI is there, and it's slow as molasses.

Somebody give us a medium please. I want an Xbox mode on Windows 10!

- Price of PC's (i know in USA you can get a good price but in my country they are very expensive).

- I move a lot (different places) so its much easier to bring PS4 around than a full PC tower.

- I like the ps4 exclusives.

This.

Also I want physical discs.

All you are saying is that at some point in the future, the PS4 will be old tech which is a pointless statement to make since the same can be said about all tech. Get back to me when the PS4 actually is outdated and we can talk but that doesn't look to be happening any time soon.

It's as outdated as old graphics cards are outdated but still able to play games with some sacrifices to framerate.

"With a pc, you can completely surpass the console experience!"

"Damn, that is nice! Say, can you recommend me some pc exclusives? Heard about 40 games were announced at e3....not interested in the side scrolling indies, strategy type games or MMOs."

"....."

Sure? Starcitizen, Pillars of Eternity, Mount & Blade, Asylum, Grim Dawn, Wreckfest, Unreal Tournament for example. All of these are very different games and not in the genres you mentioned which is pretty silly restriction. And ofcourse there are timed exclusives too which I didn't list. How about you give me a list of Playstation exclusives that aren't 3rd person action games, Dreams and Gran Turismo?
