Horizon Zero Dawn | Cinematic Trailer

You know I've been meaning to ask, can a post post-apocalyptic situation change how a human looks and talks?

I guess it depends on the kind of apocalypse. I'm fairly sure there would be some very strange looking folks if it was of the Nuclear variety and there was world wide long lasting fall out. All that radiation can't be good for your genes... or well you in general.

Giant robots just murder kill you in the regular physical sense, ain't fucking with your DNA.... we think....

I think Aloy looks like a complete bad ass and I love her facial and body design. So much so that I paid extra for the collectors addition so that I could have an 8 inch statue of her rocking next to my TV.

Looks - probably not
Talks - absolutely
Can a drastic change in diet or food source contribute to change in looks?

Yeah we still don't really know what caused the world to go dark

It's the hair messing with the character's sense of aesthetic proportions. It makes her head appear taller than it actually is, and it also pushes her ears forward. Combine that with the fur shoulder pads pushing the width of her shoulders in and it looks off. It makes the character look "chibi like." And everything else is intentionally realistic.

It's an artistic choice to draw your eyes into her face I think.

Environmental pressures do affect evolution so its entirely possible that with enough time, humans would look different. Language absolutely would change and quickly. It may even become indistinguishable from its current form very fast.

I'd give Bethesda that award.
Could be. Doesn't really hamper my excitement nor do I dislike the design.

I feel that Fallout 4 was better in this regard. Bioware just inched out over Bethesda tho.

Yeah, Fallout is better, but mainly because the character models are a generation behind. Bioware's characters end up making an even worse impression because the models aren't actually half bad, even though I despise the designs themselves.

Not on its own, but add in ten thousand years of evolutionary and social adaptation? Absolutely. Not that I think Aloy appears out of the normal range of human variation today. Just about any woman can tell you that men immediately evaluate how attractive you are. If you don't fit neatly into their definition of attractive or plain then there's a secondary reaction.

I like that Guerrilla is willing to buck the usual Hollywood approach of messing up a supermodel's hair and pretending she's an average woman.

Ah sorry for the late response, went to sleep and this thread got buried. Hmm two followup questions if I may; is there any way for this process of changing how a human drastically looks to be accelerated? Would a severe decrease in population i.e near extinction levels contribute to that? If I recall correctly lions had to resort to inbreeding after a catastrophic event (was it after the ice age?)
As for how she looks, I think she looks perfectly fine. She has really pretty eyes and those flaming red hair are like my kryptonite. I have to commend guerrilla for daring to deviate from the norm i.e not looking like a runaway model. They managed to strike a nice balance between an attractive person and strong one

Would it really be a surprise if that did happen? I mean, after all, a bunch of people are incredibly hyped for it after all.

Yeah, but people still have their doubts about it, as evidenced by the numerous 2017 disappointments threads, etc.

Still though, the majority of people are stoked about this game, including me, especially after playing it at PSX, reading impressions from GAFers, hearing Colin Moriarty and Greg Miller rave about it, and the tons of offscreen footage showing less scripted things, as well as huge towns.

This game might be the surprise GOTY

RE7 and this are my two most anticipated games of 2017. I won't be surprised if it is my favorite game of 2016.

Lots of competition though with Persona, Mass Effect, Red Dead(maybe) Nioh and NieR. Obviously Zelda too,but I probably won't get to play that.

Yep. Drastic phenotypic changes would take hundreds of thousands of years.

I dunno dude many people(well on gaf at least) want this game to fail even after the numerous glowing previews.

Yeah, but people still have their doubts about it, as evidenced by the numerous 2017 disappointments threads, etc.

I mean yea, but a surprise GOTY to me is something like DOOM, Undertale, Titanfall 2, etc. Shit that you just didn't expect at all.

Whereas Horizon has some concerns for sure, but like, if it did succeed, it wouldn't necessarily be that big of a surprise. More like a sigh of relief.

I REFUSE to get my hopes that high, for pretty much any game.

I've decided that I'll be happy and consider it a success if it gets an 80 or over on MC.
Pretty much where I am atm.

On one hand, if they really deliver at everything they've shown and the action-RPG aspect with a good story, it has def a 90+ (Universal Aclaim) potential.

But I'll be happy with an 80+ because it sounds very unlikely that in a post Skyrim/ Witcher 3 world a team with allegedly more limited means (budget/ team size) and experience in either Rpg or open world games would succeed that much.

But I sure hope so :)

What makes you think Guerrilla has limited resources? Their studio is plenty big enough to make a proper RPG.

It isn't a problem for me because the sky doesn't crash if my expectations aren't met. If it is a 80-85 meta game, I'm still going to buy it and enjoy it.

Agreed. I don't get this mentality of not getting hyped for games. Some people act like their world will fall apart if a game fail to meet high expectations.

I'm not the geneticist in my family – that would be my wife. There are definitely factors that could influence appearance. Radiation exposure would encourage mutations. Changes in climate or other survival factors combined with low survival rates would select for specific traits. Deliberate breeding programs could do the same.

Would a severe decrease in population i.e near extinction levels contribute to that? If I recall correctly lions had to resort to inbreeding after a catastrophic event (was it after the ice age?)

Yes, and as you point out inbreeding should act as an accelerant. Desirable traits and undesirable traits are both exaggerated, and the latter tend to lead to higher mortality which should improve the survivability of the population as a whole presuming there's enough genetic diversity to start with. It sucks for a lot of the individuals who die out to improve the average, though.

Absolutely! I have a weakness for redheads as well and agree that she's charming in her own way, from what little I've seen. Being treated like an outsider will have given her a strong independent streak that suits the journey that awaits.

There's a consensus on which aspects of the game could fail? I already accepted that story/narrative could be the main weak point (if it's not that should sky rocket the game) and maybe some filler here and there. I already bought what they showed us as something spectacular, with that in mind and without negative surprises I think I won't be disappointed.

This is me talking anxiously waiting for the game to be released of course, back to Gravity Rush 2.

I'm going to go with an 87. The Core combat is strong and graphically resonates with most people. Praise will be lavished on the enemy design. Some reviewers are going to complain about some repetitive gameplay or the lack of a hard lock on in melee combat though and that'll drag down the metascore.

I see no reason to think this won't be a very enjoyable game.

The story and sidequests have to be on point for me personally.

A preview that allows significant capture of gameplay shows they're confident that what's shown will look appealing even outside the usual "15 minutes demo"

In general that's a decent indication that a product is comfortable to hit the 75-80 range. But >85 will be reflected in how positive the extended previews are and how early the embargo drops. Late embargo don't mean it'll score bad but earlier often implies greater confidence.

I'm no geneticist either, just a procrastinating idiot who's working toward his engineering degree :p. Don't know any geneticist where I'm from but I like googling and searching for a answers for my own general knowledgem Just thought up another question; would a polluted or more artificial food source drastically affect human growth and maturity?

You know it's funny how 90% or more of what we're speculating right now might not come true in the full game but I guess it speaks volume of how intriguing the premise of horizon and its main character, Aloy. I'm hoping Guerrilla can put together a cohesive and interesting package.

It's pretty easy to look up examples of how malnutrition affects development. I'm pretty sure you're not going to see any significant structural differences except in extreme cases that probably lead to starvation. There's a lot more room for variation in soft tissue development AFAIK.
