What is the additional vetting and why are men discriminated against?

Is it that they prioritize the weakest people (women and children)?

Whole family units, especially with children, are given express access - additionally people who are in a lot of physical/sexual danger. The reason that single men are given additional vetting and scrutiny, is because of the fear of a terrorist mole slipping through the cracks - it's not that they aren't allowed, it's just that they want to make reeeeeal sure first. I don't actually agree with that stance, but I think it's a more accurate description.

Really wish I could move there. I work as a test analyst for Overwatch at Blizzard, and game companies there won't even consider looking at me due to the "Canadian has to do the job" rule (not that I want to leave Blizzard, it's amazing, but so is Canada).

EA has a huge campus in Vancouver and is definitely not just hiring Canadians. Just saying.

Its not too cold in southern ontario.
Not a ton of snow usually either. Im in mid west ontario now, lots of snow not very cold. Like -3c

Hopefully countries like Canada will be giving Trump hell for this. Especially when their Canadian citizenship means nothing to us now apparently.

Trudeau is the master of saying the right things without actually making them happen. Just ask our Indigenous peoples whose communities still don't have safe drinking water.

I agree with the stance wholeheartedly. It makes total sense to prioritize more vulnerable refugees, while at the same time, being more cautious against those who are statistically more likely to be potentially radicalized.

Anyone wanting to come but thinks it's too cold should come to Victoria. We're basically the Hawaii of Canada

Housing market is shit right now, though not as expensive as Vancouver. Also we're a small city, so if you're used to the bustle of the big city then it can feel pretty boring here, but there's an active local, downtown culture.

The last part is the hardest part IMO. Getting a job without flying over there to interview should be pretty difficult, right? Do they require employers to prove there's no Canadian suited for a job before hiring a foreigner (kinda like our work visas in the US)?

Yep. Though, if you're educated and experienced in a desirable market it can really help.

Wait, I was born in Syria but I only stayed there for 40 days. I've lived virtually my whole life in Canada. I have a Canadian passport, no Syrian passport and I'm a Canadian citizen.

I'm banned from entering the US?

My understanding is that if you can still claim citizenship within Syria, yeah. Can you?

At this point, I'll take it. While other countries are electing far-right governments, it's at least the right direction.

Well I'll be honest. I don't know exactly what that means. "can I still claim citizenship within Syria ". I assume because I'm born in Syria I'm automatically a citizen of Syria.

I have in my possession a card that shows Im a Canadian citizen "certificate of Canadian citizenship". I don't have anything from the Syrian government in my possession.

I'll have to look it up.

What you could do too is come do a 2-year Master's degree here (easy to get a student visa) (or a PhD I guess) and then you can apply for permanent residency even without a job offer as soon as you graduate. I took advantage of that. (I also did my Bachelor's degree here but that's irrelevant as far as that program is concerned)

If you don't have a Syrian passport you're fine. Since you're "only" Canadian at that point. At least you SHOULD be fine. The ban applies to dual-citizens, and since you're not a dual citizen...

I re-read the article and I'm still missing it. Ugh.

He didn't qualify for refugee status the same way that Syrians and Somali refugees do- one of whom is now the Minister of Immigration.

Specifically,
Canty's own experiences hadn't resulted in assault, extensive detention, or lack of due process

Yamauchi openly admitted that law enforcement unfairly treats black Americans, only that Canty's experiences didn't qualify. It's why Somali refugees get admitted just fine but this guy didn't.

If you have Dual citizenship and one of those countries is banned, it seems like it.

If you are just a Canadian citizen seems fine.

If you don't look white bread normal, probably can expect some extra hassle at the airports I imagine.

Yeah exactly. Considering the general vibe of the world and the mess in America right now, I'm all for fostering a Canadian sense of inclusion and diversity to combat this alt-right bullshit.

Definitely more needs to be done to support our Indigenous communities too though

Well, I think that's bullshit. Black people have a very well documented history of persecution in the US. Fuck that.

So yea, my point stands: Aint no country saying "Hey Black Americans those cops of yours is on some bullshit...come here and live in peace not fear".
