PS4 System Software Update 4.50 Features Detailed

Are external drives cheaper than internal ones?

You can sometimes find them a bit cheaper, considering many people (myself included) just removed the drive from an external drive we bought, and put it inside our PS4.

Then you put the original PS4 drive, into your external enclosure, and you have an External Drive now too.

So the USB drives would be additional space and not in place of the built in one correct? Want to make sure I can do something like 2TB internal + whatever external.

not mentioned in the release note:

boost mode for PS4 Pro
higher frame rate for old game which dont have Pro patch

I hope you can change the settings to make quick menu one tap to bring up the menu as opposed to holding it down.

I think they did a really great job with the menu. I love hitting share and then pressing square to upload a video, as opposed to the old way that took me out of the game and took forever.

One thing they need to be able to do is allow us to message in quick menu. Can you message in quick menu?

Features I still want:

-PSN name change
-Friend folders
-Icon customization (resizing)
-Multiple copies of games into multiple folders

3D SBS Video.

External HDD support is great to see.

Custom wallpapers is almost great, they just need to get rid of that dumb screenshot-only limitation (since it isn't actually a limitation given that you can screenshot the browser, it just adds some extra hoops to jump through).

With the notification changes, are they going to be changing how download management works? Having to sift through a bunch of other bullshit to find my downloads sounds seriously annoying.

Quick Menu improvements seem nice, having those huge labels always visible seemed unnecessary. Seeing the convergent evolution of the PS4 Quick Menu and the XB1 Guide is interesting, and hopefully it continues, as they both have a few things I'd like to see on the other. Hopefully the Quick Menu picks up the clock that the Guide just got in the latest insider preview, along with access to the Trophy list for the current game.

Pretty sure that won't be possible - the Xbox takes over the entire drive, without regard to any pre-existing partitioning, and I'd bet the PS4 will be the same.

You can already see trophies for the game you're playing

You can also get a quick list of who's playing the game you're playing in quick menu

I definitely want a clock. I also still want it to be slimmer. Xbox menu looks so much more sexier.

Ok, I want the biggest, cheapest external HD I can use. Any good suggestions?

Edit: Can we also use screenshots within video apps for backgrounds? I'd love to use the title screen of The Disastrous Life of Saiki K as a wallpaper. ;)

Happy about CW. Don't care about the other stuff. Can't wait to find out what else this update contains.

I guess for whatever years left before next gen, I'll enjoy a nice custom wallpaper. Hopefully this feature is there day 1 on PS5 lol

So what's a good usb 3.0 external?

Also I hope it's just the wording, otherwise it's REALLY lame that only a game screenshot (i'm assuming taken by the system) can be used as a wallpaper.

These and Beast Mode ... wow.

So do all external HDD of 5TB or larger require an additional power cord? That would be annoying but I guess it would be easy to hide.

Is there a minimum capacity of the external HDD? Microsoft has that completely moronic 256GB minimum capacity which makes it impossible to hook up a 120 or 240GB SSD to install a couple of games that have long loading times on HDD.

Unknown for now. It would be nice if small USB 3 pen drives could be used.

Minimum allowed size for INTERNAL drive on PS4 is 160GB.

I am not a fan of the notifications change though. There is nothing wrong with current system sorting things into tabs. Meh on having one big giant messy area with everything.

This update sounds amazing, although one big factor for my liking is whether or not the external drive will be console-specific or not (fwiw, the Xbox One external hard drive support isn't), which is kind of a big deal since it means, for example, I can bring an external HD with me to a friend's house to game on their PS4 without having to download some giant patch because the install on the external will be good-to-go with the patch and DLC.
