PS4 System Software Update 4.50 Features Detailed

Oh boy. I've read a few dozen pages on the firmware details and impressions. This one sounds like a doozy! I'm glad I settled for a 750GB SSD instead of splurging on a 2TB or more. This is the best of both worlds. Cheap external storage for library archive and internal SSD for high performance for actively played games. And boost mode! And PSVR 3D Blu-rays! And improved PSVR cinema quality! Among other things, but those are the biggest ones for me. GAT DAMN, SONY! Can't wait until this officially releases.

The beta still has some quirks it seems. I just did a backup/restore after moving everything to an external so that I could downgrade the 4TB drive hanging out the back connected with a SATA extension cable to the stock 1TB to tidy things up. Now I can't play anything. Extended storage is visible to the system and all applications are seen on there in the storage menu. Games appear in the library too but they all have warning icons and when I try to start the system gets indefinitely stuck on a "Checking extended storage. Please wait..." screen.

EDIT: Some games are starting to work now. I mentioned earlier that a bunch of "System storage exclusive" data stays on internal even after moving things to external. It seems that a) that stuff doesn't get saved/restored in the backup process and b) that stuff is required to be present internally to launch a game from external and c) that stuff starts getting copied across automatically as soon you connect an external device but can take a little while

My 2TB internal only has like 500mbZ left. Will be nice to be able to offload back burner games onto a USB drive so that I don't have to redownload the game and/or all the DLC patches if I want to play it again later.

This is really very weird. Why does the code expire on 3/31 for the US accounts but expires on 4/2 (already expired) in the EU accounts? This is totally absurd.

What's the 31st month? 😉

Sorry. I got confused. Because when I entered the code in the webstore it said it is expired. That is why I thought it was already expired and confused both order of dates. Do you know why it didn't work on the webstore?

Ha, no problem, I quite often get confused on here for a moment when people post American dates.

Where did you get the code from, is it possible the code has already been used? Are you using it in the correct region store? When you try and update your PS4 does it let you download the beta?

The code I got is from my email using the correct EU store. The US codes work fine on the webstore when redeeming them there but not the EU codes it seems. You have to activate them on the PS4 hardware.

My favorite small hidden feature is pushing options over a games tile and using the new upload/download save option to quickly access saves of freshly redownloaded games.

Now you mention it, I can remember some other codes only being able to be redeemed on the console itself. I can't remember what those codes where though.

At least it's working for you now, it's a great update, enjoy it.

Haha I didn't. Thank you for saying that anyway.

The EU guide I got says you need to activate it using a PS4 system and I don't have access to a PS4 for certain time now. US codes work fine using the Redeem Code page. I don't even have access to the EU Beta forums: it says access denied: it must be because I didn't activate the code yet.

We need to know if someone with an EU account could have activated it using the Redeem Code page in browser.

Edit: Problem solved. I forgot about the mobile app that used to activate the code with it. Weird how you could do that with the mobile app but not with the Redeem Code page since both share the same code and open the same page.

For anyone who's tried out the 3D Blu-Ray support on PSVR, what is displayed on your TV (assuming it's not a 3DTV)? Does it output in 2D (like PSVR games do with the social screen) or is there an alert saying the television is not 3D capable? If it's the former, that would be awesome for people who can't agree if a movie should be seen in 3D or not. The compromise could be the person who wants it in 3D, puts on the headset, and the person who wants 2D, watches on TV. If it's the latter, I guess the TV should just be turned off while you are watching the movie in the headset.

No video or audio signal is sent to my (2D) TV while watching a 3D blu-ray, just the PSVR headset.

Ah, okay. I assumed as much. So, no point in having the TV on while watching a 3D Blu-Ray movie on PSVR if you don't have a 3DTV. In my room, I have a 32" Vizio non-3D HDTV and that 24" PlayStation 3D Display. Once the firmware officially releases, I'll check out if it outputs to the 3D display. That would be nice, as I only have only one set of glasses that came with the display. It would allow for at least two people to watch a movie in 3D instead of one. Sure, I could get more glasses...

I don't know if it's been mentioned, but the option to search has now been added to the library - meaning you can simply type out whatever it is you're looking to redownload from your purchase history in the library.

Batman: Return to Arkham had already FPS increase on PS4 PRO. I wonder how it runs now after the update. Maybe NXGamer or someone who has the game can tell us.

Is there an easy way to count FPS on PS4?

Ok my opinion on notifications is slightly more tempered since new downloads actually show up there. It's still wasting space and cluttered imo though

Still doesn't make sense to me that Library is locked to the right side of the dmb and not the left

I do not like the new notification screen, looks a step back.

I'm still hoping to get a code, but what I'm curious about is I play alot of competitive online games...as well as a backlog of sinlge player games.

If I have this installed, but not turning on boost mode, will my regular gaming be affected because it being a beta firmware?

can you go back to the previous official firmware?

Anyone have a link to the beta feedback forum? I couldn't find one in the invite email and have a few things I want to say.

Is it possible to swap back and forwards between beta and release firmware? i.e. I want to install a new internal drive, but don't want to lose my beta access - given I will need to download the non-beta firmware, to set-up this new drive, will I be able to reinstall the beta once I have done this?

If you got the beta legitimatly and not through a burner account you can bounce between them as often as you like.

I'm not sure about the setup for the first guy who responded to you, but my HDTV shows the 3D video like normal when I have my PSVR unit playing 3D Blu-rays.

Nope, only once at time but you can have multiple hard drive and swap them when you need it.
Are the hard drives formatted Ina special way like on xbox or just normal hard drives that work on pc/Mac as well. And when you remove and out another one, those tiles just appear and disappear on the dashboard?

Not bad. I could have my hard drives labeled by release year.

Can I use stuff off the hard drive on another PS4 as long as I have a account on it? or is it locked to only one console?
