SFV: Kolin Reveal Trailer

Story mode was awesome. It was so stupid in the best way. Necalli being the ultimate jobber is the best thing that edgelord character has.

I really enjoyed the story. It was better than MKX in my opinion. It's not like Street Fighter ever made any sense anyway.

Exactly that's why i liked the story didn't take itself seriously at all lol, it was like watching a meaningless shonen anime.

So good

She looks really fun. I did want to see Capcom create a moveset for her a while ago, but I never thought they'd actually do it. I'm just completely shocked that I actually got her playable. Guess Gill needs a fire character now, doesn't he?

Since someone brought her up, crazy-chainsaw wielding Effie could be a lot of fun. I mean, if the Illuminati turned Necro into....whatever he is. Who knows what they did to her.

Story mode took both FANG and Rashid from mediocrity, and turned them into real characters.

I didn't feel anything of value was gained with either of them. FANG is still a very capable weirdo, but we knew that already because of a few animations like his CA and V-Reversal. We still have questions, but I'm glad we do, is just that they didn't really answer anything. Yes he is evil as fuck, but again, we already knew that due to the fact that he is one of the four Kings. Everyone in they group encompasses a sin of some sort. Maybe that's why Sagat left? Who knows.

Same with Rashid. He had lots of dialogue, but it added nothing to the few lines we already knew while playing, because again, Capcom did an amazing job designing the characters. I still think Birdie is one of the best designs in the game. You couldn't pay me to even shake that guy's hand he looks so grime infested lol

"Ice Karin-Cammy so cool!1!!1!!"

I don't like her at all. Street Fighter was about martial arts first and just few super powers.
Dhalsim has some karma flame but can't use flame in his normal attacks, Necro has some special with electricity because he's some experiment freak. Even Bison couldn't have his purple psycho power on all the time.
I know Kolin powers are just Gill's blue half, but Gill is a KOF-like boss. I'm cool with bosses having superpowers but regular fighters can't spam fire and ice like it's freaking Skyrim.

His st.mp, cr.mp, cr.hp, st.hp and df.hp all have psycho power emanating from his hands. And we haven't seen all of Kolin's normals. Her normals seemed to be fairly straight forward, just the specials and moves where she used ice powers.

There are a lot of valid complaints but this seems kinda arbitrary tbh.

I don't even see the point of complaining about the prevalence of powers in a 2D/2.5D fighter to begin with, games which tend to put a great deal of emphasis on flash in their presentations (I would even argue that SF hasn't been about "martial arts first" since the original). If anything, 3D fighters are generally more suited to players who prefer a martial arts over powers focus.

Did you forget that the main character shoots energy balls out of his hands, flies through the air with a tornado kick, and has an uppercut that launches him about 10 feet into the air?

Not really impressed, I would have rather had her stay as an NPC considering her roles in 3 and 5 never seemed to even imply she was capable of holding her own in a fight.

Regardless, I'm not going to harp on it, I'm just hoping I'm happier with the next 4 characters.

Huh. I hadn't thought of Kolin's ice powers as being Gill's power...that makes me like her more. This also makes me wonder on if we'll get another Gill lackey who uses fire, I would dig that.
Yes, this was posted earlier in the thread too.

Considering Kolin has "Ice" powers, I wouldn't be surprised if another character this season has "Fire" powers.

It would definitely make sense, and it'd be kinda cool. Personally I think that even if such a characters shows up, they might not be playable until later seasons.

every time there's sfv news i keep looking in to see if it will bring me back to the game, but even my boy akuma couldn't do that. this character does nothing for me personally. i think at this point imma just bide my time till umvc3 on pc next month.

The two main characters literally fire energy balls at people like in Dragonball. Someone having ice powers isn't so insane after that.

I like "realistic" characters like Fei Long, Karin, Makoto, etc. - but yeah, this is a series with Blanka, Dhalsim, Rose, Viper, and in general a ton of fireballs. I don't think Kolin is that different.

Cool thanks for the answer. Interested in diving into SFV at some point just haven't gotten around to it.

You can also buy a season pass which includes 6 characters per season and a premium costume for each at 30$.

Personally, I'd recommend buying one season pass and saving up the FM for the next season (Season 1 pass is available for 20$ right now) but I can understand if you want the stages and story costumes and stuff so you might not want to do that since you'll potentially be running tight on FM.

Thanks I'll keep that in mind. I admit I haven't looked into the character roster too much (play these games very casually) so I'll probably end up picking which characters seem interesting to me.

She looks great. Well, kinda. I also happen to prefer her older face model but aside from that I thought the trailer made her look like fun.

I think I like her design and fighting style. Seems quite unique for SF.

Hopefully she'll come with that stage used in the story mode where she is outside of the Russian bar overlooking a snowy Moscow. Her art (and briefly her trailer) seems to show a similar scene in fact. It frustrates me a little that they keep going back and forth on this actually, i.e. that they release one character with an actual stage based on their art, like Akuma, but then release the next one without such a stage to accompany them. As I've said before: newcomers especially need a stage imo to help define them. (Necalli and Fang are also still waiting for theirs by the way...even after Rashid did get one.)

Can't wait for the mods people come up with. Sub Zero mod should be easy.

Would have been interesting if one of Kolin's official costumes would have been a Sub-Zero inspired one, as a nod to MK I mean. I'm sure Ed Boon would have been amused by that.

This as well as that Sam Fisher Kolin costume really drives home the point for me that Cammy, and perhaps Karin as well, should not have been both included in this game if they were planning on including Kolin all along. I know it's a become a bit of a joke complaint but to me there actually is such a thing as having too many blonde women with doll-like faces honestly, at least from a visual variety standpoint (which to me is very important, more so than sticking to tradition by including Cammy yet again).

I mean you do see her

And then she disappears

The story was stupid but oh my god it had some really silly shit in it
The funny thing is that when you did see her, you could easily be forgiven for thinking she was a he. Like...how was I supposed to figure out that was Rashid's 'friend'

I think I can understand where MegamanPoweredUP is coming from

Yes, this is a series where people shoot energy balls and can teleport if they use yoga, but the series has always been framed around these being connected to martial arts mastery (i.e. Ryu and Ken weren't born throwing hadokens; they had to dedicate their lives to that shit first), with some subversions (some serious, like Necro and Viper, some non-serious like Blanka; also worth mentioning that Bison and Gill fall into this category as actual super-powered beings).

I think MPU's issue is that while Necro and Viper have in-universe justifications (Necro was experimented on, Viper uses a battle suit), Kolin doesn't seem to have one so far (aside from speculation that Gill probably gifted her those powers) and also she seems to use ice powers really freely but isn't a boss tier character like Bison or Gill. Personally, I think that's jumping the gun a little. She's not even released yet and I certainly don't feel like she uses her powers more than Bison or Gill. But I can sort of see where MPU's coming from (even if I don't agree).

I personally just think that Kolin as an addition is really forced, since I never got the impression that Kolin was ever supposed to be a fighter from SF3, and she fulfilled her role in SFV's story just fine (at no point did I think, "is she gonna fight or what?" unlike that Alex/Mika/Gief match that never happened in the Story Mode). Still this could be good. If they're fleshing out Kolin, I think it's because they'll want to flesh out the Illuminati faction.

Even Fei long uses fire:

latest

:P

As mentioned above, all of the crazy stuff is framed within the SF universe as martial arts mastery.

Fei Long wasn't some freak mutant that could do fire kicks from birth. Dude's been training since he was six years old to be able to do that.

Yeah it's silly SF logic but it's usually consistent (well aside from Blanka, and some of the series newcomers ever since Ono's started working on the series)

Kolin is based on the word "kori", which is Japanese for ice.
Did they mention this anywhere or is that just some "I'm an expert" thing of knowing Japanese? Because Kolin is a 20 year old character and that would be on hell of a foresight.

That's her old face, though.

They literally say she's an expert in Systema:
"Kolin excels in the Russian martial art of Systema, utilizing the opponent's momentum against them and executing various slash-like attacks and knife hand strikes."
That gives her more martial art expertise than most of the cast.
