I was about to say, he hasn't exactly had the kindest words for superhero films. This reads like an enterprising exec's dream choice, rather than anything realistic.
Well, think about it. SS is not typical super hero stuff which is what he seemed to have a huge issue with. I'm torn on this though. I think Gibson is a great director but I'm not sure attaching his name to DCEU is what WB needs right now.

He is a great director, and Hacksaw Ridge was great, but it comes down to how you feel about Mel as a person. A person who has heinous views at the very, very least said some heinous things. I'm of the side who sees movies as collaborative, so I'm not into boycotting everyone's work for one man's. But, yeah, Mel is a sketchy, crazy, talented asshole.
The other director named did Child 44 and Safe House, so I'd take Mel over him any time. I'm hoping they have more names in mind.

He's said multiple times that he hates superhero films. And I don't know that he could make a PG-13 movie about criminals.
With that being said, I would absolutely be down with this. Gibson might be a shitbag but he's an amazing director.
Even if this rumor is true, I doubt he'll take the job. But he'd be a great choice.

Honestly who knows. This could be an easy way to further revive his career. I'd certainly have more faith in him knocking out a good movie than anyone else involved with DC.
Could be a big reason why. Maybe they view him as someone who can come in a change up the formula.

If Logan does well, I can see DC wanting a R rated series of their own. They tested the waters with the R rated cut of BvS.
So desperate they had to settle for the guy whose movie has 6 Oscar nominations this year.
If anything that sounds like he has ideas how to make these movies for less. A more grounded SS movie that is balls to the wall crazy could be a way to slightly rejig things.
After Hacksaw Ridge I'd love to see what Gibson could bring to a CBM.

You know, that's kinda how Nolan got Batman Begins: the execs wanted someone who wasn't capable of anything resembling Batman & Robin, and was able to get that in Nolan without having to go too out there for mainstream audiences, like Aronofsky's notorious Year One proposal.
