I hated Suicide Squad but I think having a diverse cast and female characters in prominent roles was part of the magic formula that made it do so well at the box office. That's still not something we've see too much of yet. Putting Gibson on it takes away a lot of that goodwill.

That being said, I look at that shortlist and he's the only director that wouldn't get turned into hamburger meat by a movie of this size. They can't find anyone else? lol

The one credit I'll give Gibson for diversity is Apocalypto. He leveraged his craziness for good there.

Haven't seen Hacksaw, but no. Braveheart is incredible and Passion was super well made even if it's not for everyone. Apocalypto as well, I didn't personally care for it but it was well directed.
 
He did horrible things but is it really possible for him to be a piece of shit all that time and not be found out until late in years. I'm still wary of him being a decent person and if he has changed at all but it's clear he has major problems with drink, was warped with a terrible upbringing and is also Australian. If he was a rapist like Polanski I would be hating 100% but I feel there is something broken about Mel that makes me give him a little leeway.

I can understand and do not fault people for turning on Gibson entirely. I feel the same way about him on a personal level. But I can still appreciate his work and his artistic merits. That likely can be seen as hypocritical, of course, but to me, they are separate until he makes something where his hate and racism is on full display.

And I can appreciate that. It's hard at times. Like, I'm not watching shit from Polanski..I don't care if it's the highest rated movie of all times. Just ain't happening. I hate when folks I enjoy pull bullshit because it's a challenge for me to separate their actions from their works..especially if its fresh.

I'm not trying to make excuses for the things he said.

I'm just saying i'll still watch his movies. I was a fan before all this came out, and a few dumb rants isn't enough for me to completely turn him off.
