Eh, an apology from Mel Gibson is useless tbh. People already know what's up, you're either ok with supporting a racist piece of shit's work or you're not.
Hey guy do you understand nuance? It does not seem so. I like Mel as a movie director that does not mean I endorse his political or religious views.

I can imagine this would blow us off when it comes I've seen hacksaw, that had emotion and story put at its core.
Gibson can bless this thing big time.

Man you guys will believe any headline with DCEU in the title wont you? There's zero chance of Gibson directing suicide squad, the same way theres zero percent chance Ben Affleck is stepping down from the batman role.

A few months ago when Gibson was doing the press circuit for Hacksaw, Mel had nothing but negative things to say about comic book movies.

Fleischer would actually be ridiculously solid. They should choose him if they're gonna go for quality rather than big name director attached to it.

Marvel supposedly looked into Tarantino for Iron Man. He might be a great fit for the DCU if they give him free reign

That depends on the DC movies becoming acclaimed both financially and critically so they can take more chances.

Seems like DC should really just go the dark route with their movies. They have potential with that imo.

Some more info from Justin Kroll (author of the Variety piece).

Couple updates on the SUICIDE SQUAD director search since I posted after a few calls. First if Mel wants it, it's his.

While some might say he said he would never do a comic book movie, heard he is more intrigued by this cast then material.

Will and Mel actually wanted to do THE ACCOUNTANT years ago but old regime didn't want Mel but shows how much Mel want to work with Will

That said still ways away from decision on this, stay tuned

So, Will is actually down to work with Mel?
And Mel is actually down to work with not one but 3 black people?
I'm non ironically kind of shocked. If he can actually prove or at least pretend that he's not a piece of shit I'll give him a chance. maybe.

I don't boycott Mel Gibson films. I think he does interesting work and approaches interesting subject matter. But I'm also fully aware that he outed himself like a dumbfuck, and his solution after that was to apologize for his racism towards jews, and not for anything else, and then go off the radar hoping everyone forgot about it. Now he's back. Since I still play Dragon Quest games and enjoy the music despite thinking the composer is a massive pile of human waste, I'm okay with watch a Gibson film. But if anyone feels strongly about it and wants to distance themselves from his works, I fully stand by them. Why should anyone defend a guy who said terrible things when you don't even know him? Do you also know all his celebrity friends who say he's a nice guy? No? Then who gives a fuck right?

Pretty much where I'm at with the whole thing

Polanski one of my favorite directors too so Im pretty much in the whole separation of moral character and media thing. But boycotting is an understandable stance to take

Now that would make me want to see SS2. Mel knows how to do action. Apocalypto is one of my favorite movies. Also this should be rated R.

I don't think people really understand just how vile "raped by a pack of niggers" is.

That's not "I've had a few beers and am saying things that aren't appropriate, ha ha, give me shit tomorrow". Like, you had to think about that. That's not something you just make up off the top of your head. You've had those sorts of thoughts before. Many times. It's who you are.

Support Mel if you want to, but don't be surprised if the affected groups of that kind of language give you the side eye and think you're not on their team.

Well said.

I don't really give a shit if the PR is all bad, I want to see Mel do something like this. Really, I just want to see what kind of action scenes he'll come up with. Goddamn do I love how that man shoots action.

I'd love to see what he would do with a superhero movie. His criticism of superhero movies was quite justified so it would be interesting to see how he would handle them.

Mel's a talented director. Don't write his movies off just because of what he said. If you try to avoid supporting racists and anti-semites, might as well stop spending money all together. He's been trying to right his wrongs.

I'll watch SS2 if he signs up.

It's too late for some people. Since he didn't publicly apologize about the phone rant, he's beyond redemption for some. It is what it is.

Don't tell people to not do something if they feel it's right.

Man has not apologized for saying he wishes the mother of his children was raped by a pack of niggers

Fuck him and anything with his name attatched

I won't support a fucking cunt piece of shit for being a reprehinsible piece of shit who won't fucking apologize

On the topic of shady directors
Didnt Woody Allen marry his own daughter?

Well he dated Mia Farrow and Previn was her adopted daughter, and once he split with Farrow he dated Previn...

It's one of those things where you can say *technically* there's nothing wrong with that since they have no blood relation but can feel kinda eeeeeeeeeeeeeeh.

The crazy thing about Gibson's racist rant is people actually undersell it, by not quoting the entire sentence which is somehow even worse.

Either way, I am in the humble minority of dickheads who thinks his directing style is very very silly. So, it's easy for me to have no conflict on the man and talk shit. I just think he sucks.

He makes very melodramatic movies. I'm a sucker for shit like Braveheart and hacksaw Ridge though

I think the one most far removed from his other ones and his best made was Apocalypto tho.

And yeah all of them are violent as hell

Having slept on this, I still can't believe that WB would be willing to risk the bad press and potential backlash. Considering the state of the DCEU, you'd think they would want to stay far away from any potential controversy. If they want a director of Gibson's caliber, there are other options. I would never defend him as a human being but I think he is an extremely talented director and I'm not opposed to watching his movies so I'd be pretty excited if he was confirmed as directing Suicide Squad 2. But it seems like such a risky move for WB. If this is all true, I really don't understand their reasoning.

Can WB really fire him if his wife is co-producing all of DCEU films?

Plus, firing a director mid-production would be counter-productive no matter what and the director's guild would probably have his back. But make no mistake, unless Justice League cracks a billion and gets a fresh rating on RT, his ass is gone. We knew that the moment WB delayed JL 2.

Mel Gibson has said and done some awful things, but I don't think even he deserves to be the director of the Suicide Squad sequel.

Snyder was confirmed at the very beginning to direct JL2 but that was when JL would be a 2 parter. When that plan changed (likely due to WB rethinking a 2 parter when the movies would be years apart) it left Snyder free to do a possible passion project. Then The Batman got delayed and now there's talk that Snyder may have time to do both his movie and JL2. They want The Batman out as quickly as possible. Almost like they feel that is what will keep the ship from sinking. If they wanted Snyder off he'd be off already regardless of how JL does. But Snyder's company partially funds this universe (Snyder and his wife are responsible for there even being a WW movie) and Snyder sticks around and completes the movies WB want even if they mess with him. He's a loyal dog and you don't put out loyal dogs. Not especially after losing Rick, Michelle and Ben as directors.
