OLED screens for small devices are going to be in very short supply soon if iPhone rumors are to be believed

But I imagine they'll be really high resolution.

Samsung use oleds in their low end phones and they're 720p. I'm sure if Nintendo were that way inclined they'd have been able to get a contract with a supplier.

Still it's done now, and I guess I should be lucky that it's not a TN panel, I just hope we don't have a lottery like the 3ds with some having IPS and some having TN. That would be annoying....

As someone with a pre-order who is wavering on whether to keep it, no achievements is a huge negative to me, I understand if it isn't a big deal for other people but it's something I take for granted as a non-Nintendo gamer for many years. It's less about comparing myself to others and more about having a log of my gaming history, I can visit Exophase and it has an almost complete history of all the games I've played in the last decade, the games that I've loved and put many hours in to completion, the games that didn't click showing perhaps a single trophy and everything inbetween. It's fucking cool and I love the idea of having my own Nintendo history.

If it isn't a big deal to you, then fine, whatever but that's still not an excuse for not having such a rudimentary feature that nearly every other gaming platform possesses.

UI is clean, modern, minimalistic, and fast. Love it. And those sound effects are satisfyingly addictive.

Imagine the chaos had this video leaked before we even knew what the NX was, like back in August or September of last year.

This is how I feel. I was planning on purchasing 3rd party games that run in parity with competitors on the Switch (e.g. Stardew Valley, Binding of Isaac, etc.) but due to the lack of achievements, I'm passing.

I have to trade graphical fidelity, performance, achievements, and a built-in party chat if I want the Switch version of a game. It's too much for me.

So what? Does somebody forces you to chase the bad achievements?

No, but I take offense when developers get lazy and make achievements without actually providing anything to work toward in the game to provide any real sense of achievement. Why give me a trophy on PSN when I'd rather get some more levels, or some sort of character customization in game, or some sort of unlockable in game.

I did say though, that it's better to have the option than not. So I hope that, whether launch or later, they do add that option for people who enjoy those systems. I just hope that it doesn't lead to toxicity, like gamerscore, or incessant popups and notifications.

I like mynintendo missions, too. If you play FE:H or Miitomo you can collect a lot of coins. Buying and playing games digitally gets you gold coins, which gets you discounts on stuff, or free digital content. I prefer that, personally.

You can't support achievements and when someone tells you a good reason why their addiction is a negative thing and call it not relevant to the discussion. It makes me want to stop talking to you. Good day, sir/mam.

You are drawing a general conclusion from several individual cases.

All achievements do are create a psychological addiction and way to keep you locked in and devoted to an ecosystem.

To practically justify why achievements are bad. I guess the ultimate conclusion will be that it's a good thing that Nintendo didn't include them.

It's a logical fallacy.

And it's irrelevant when you answer with these exceptions to my posts saying that making good achievements are also part of making a great game. Talking about carrying a discussion on a deaf tone.

Just so you know, it's very likely that there will be (at some point if not at launch) My Nintendo Missions for Nintendo games, which are basically achievements that give you coins redeemable for tangible rewards. We don't know yet if/when those will be included for Switch games but they're already there for mobile games.

No idea if they'll be integrated into the system OS or if third party games can use them, but it's very likely first party games will.

As "Nintendo gamers", unlike you "non-Nintendo gamers" what you describe was often handled by an activity log that showed how much time you've spend playing games and being able to rank or filter games according to what games you played the most by month/year/all time.

It's what some people are freaking out about in this very thread about whether it is included in the system or is something that will only be implemented in some way in the parental control app. The reality is, once again, these are finer details that we still just don't know yet.

Agree with you here, because it's an individual preference. I personally don't care about global achievements the way they are implemented in other consoles, but I think that it's better that they provide that as an option to those who do.

I don't see the problem. I get more value out of my money with games with trophies. I get an average of about 20 extra hours out of a game with trophies. I played Hyrule Warriors and stopped playing once the story was finished. That was about 20 hours and never went back. I played Dragon Quest Heroes and got the Platinum after 60 hours of play. It adds to the Experience for me.

Being so reliant on achievements/trophies then, I imagine you didn't get much out of games before the 7th gaming generation?

Why do you "take offense"? It's not like they have to choose between additional levels or achievements. It's either that or nothing.

I understand not caring about achievements, that's a perfectly valid opinion. But I don't understand the attitude of" I don't like them therefore I want to take the option away from the people who do enjoy it".

This doesn't make sense. It's like me saying, being so reliant on high speed internet, I imagine you didn't get much out of the internet before DSL.

The idea is that I'm not even upset by the lack of achievements.

But I did like achievements in some of the games I played. I also liked stamps in Nintendo games.

And I think that praising the lack of options is annoying.

You're practically saying "I don't like it, I don't want other people to have it." Lame.

I've never seen one good reason for it to exist the way it does on other systems, so I can't agree with people going so far as criticizing Nintendo or the Switch for its absence.
"Fucking backwards Nintendo! The Switch doesn't spray glitter all over me every time I complete a level."
Some people may like it, heck, maybe I'd even like it, but it is a DUMB thing to complain about. I said the same thing when the WiiU launched, and I'll say the same thing if Nintendo add it to Switch in an update.

Playing devil's advocate, if the UI instead had support for viewing/comparing in-game leaderboards, so I could quickly check if my friend had beaten my lap-time/hi-score without having to change the game I was playing, instead of just comparing a bunch of arbitrary milestones, then that would be somewhat more interesting to me.

Why do you "take offense"? It's not like they have to choose between additional levels or achievements. It's either that or nothing.

Just personal opinion. I like when a game gives you a sense of achievement naturally, by giving you something for going through the trouble to complete a specific challenge. It doesn't always mean additional levels.

Lots of games do it right. Some games do it wrong and just pack 100s of "achievements" to help people inflate their trophy counts and scores (which becomes a selling point :/ )

Activity log and things like myNintendo achievements could very well be additional downloads through the eShop. On the 3DS all of that stuff was not baked into the normal system UI but unique icons like the games.

As well we never got to see the actual user account stuff. Since the system now supports up to 8 users that might be behind your user account. So clicking on you account icon could show that info.

I would be somewhat surprised if they didn't try to implement myNintendo achievements into the system. But maybe that's something they'll try to link to the companion app.

Jeez, seems pretty hefty! Thanks for the info though. Any word how long it would take to download?

If it isn't a big deal to you, then fine, whatever but that's still not an excuse for not having such a rudimentary feature that nearly every other gaming platform possesses.

It's not confirmed yet is it? I thought they could still be in, in the form of MyNintendo missions at least?

Simple and clean...thank god for extra memory cause 25 GB internal is not much.

Wait how can the day one update be 24 GB then?! You wouldn't be able to download Zelda to the built-in storage?!

I like trophies. I like comparing with friends to see how far we got in games and see what choices we've made in our different playthroughs. I like getting a trophie for doing random shit in a game that the developer put there just for fun. And sometimes I like to try new things and challenge myself in a game to get a trophy.

But I would never not play a game because it doesn't have trophies or play a game only for trophies, they're just a little extra that I like in games.

I don't see how having the option to get trophies and achivements is a bad thing.

On topic: I like the UI, looks much better then the wii u imo.

The WII U UI looks like it was designed for children. The Switch's looks mature, modern and fast.

IKR! Took me right back to my childhood too! Nintendo is nothing if not whimsical.

Right, we don't know what sits behind the user profile app on the device. Apparently shiggy does tho.

MyNintendo is achievements done right. I just find it odd that grown men need to impress other men over the Internet with trophies. Unless you're into that.

Stamps were a unique take on the idea. RIP MiiVerse. :(

Can't disagree with you here. options are good.

But most games won't do that anyway, and if they do they'll have it even if there are achievements. It's literally a choice between the meaningless achievement or nothing at all. So why wish for it to be taken away from the people who do lie it? What's the harm?

pictochat is not a game, and im not you bro, dude
Baked in software like Pictochat or Streetpass, I.e. things inherit to the console at purchase. You're referencing apps, excluding the Browser mention. I get you wanted to make the joke, just saying it wasn't really relevant in regards to what I was implying. I should've made that clearer.
