Logan's World Premiere Coming One Month Early

Dope. I was planning on dropping the franchise after this since it seemed like such a fitting end to singer's xavier/Logan arc. Like end of an Era shit

Glad to hear it felt like that I'm assuming

After Apocalypse I'm not convinced Singer really has a Xavier arc. It seems he's always been much more interested in Mags instead. Xavier's just there to play off Mags. So if Mangold can do a better job with the character in a unique way, sure why not.

To elaborate: It's a good movie. Top tier in the series. Is it the best? I dunno. Maybe not. Close, though.

Mangold sticks the landing though, which, so far as I can remember, has only happened one other time: 3:10 to Yuma.

Wolverine was the protagonist since the first movie. The audience experiences things through his eyes for the vast majority of the film. So if this is indeed the character's end, it would not be a bad place for the series to end either.

Not sure how long it is. It took its time. Only one or two weird pacing issues/editing hiccups, I felt.

No post-credits stingers. Which is good. Woulda felt bullshit, honestly.

I was hoping for far better than maybe the best Xmen movie, hype deflated.

Oh well, like 300 there will always be the trailer.

Thing I didn't know until his name came up: Scott Frank worked on the screenplay. Seeing that name had me relaxed real quick.

There's more than a few direct references to "Shane," by the way. So yeah: The western-feel is 100% present and intended.

I know what you mean and I agree. But I meant more the relationship between him and Logan in the series than just him individually.

Like I thought it was great how they flipped the tables in dofp and had wolverine tell xavier to grow up as opposed to the other way around. It's not overt but I got father/son vibes from the two over the franchises history

I sorta feel like Mangold has a better grip on Xavier than Singer ever did, too.

The western vibes aren't just marketing, either.

Comparisons to 3:10 to Yuma and westerns in general give me more hope for the film.

And while you call it top tier, but not sure of it being the best of the series makes me wonder what you consider the best entry in the X-Men films.

I hem and haw between X2 and DoFP. X2 was a mean machine that did some great set up that was squandered in X3, but DoFP was this great culmination of everything before that would not have been as effective if it didn't have as much baggage leading up to it.
While DoFP has a better emotional payoff, I still go back to X2 being stronger just because of the stronger villain and how well it seemed to gel the world together. But both felt like Singer and co. firing on all cylinders.

This was posted as I was typing the above. This makes me very, very relaxed about the film. Thank you for this.

It's also easily the most violent of any X-Men movie. Deadpool can't fuck with it.

That said: The action choreography ain't the best. There are cool action scenes, no doubt, and the punch provided by all that extra viscera definitely helps, but I wouldn't say the setpieces are all that notable. They get their jobs done pretty well, though.

Is it safe to say some narratively non-sequitor mech doesn't come out at the end to fight Hugh Jackman and his allies this time?

Hair-splitting aside, the fact that Logan is even in the conversation with X2 and DoFP should be enough to settle anxious tummies.

Lmfao man that movie built up SOOOO good until
Mecha Silver Samurai
popped up. I was mouthing "wtf" in the theater.

I wonder if any continuity-sharing enteries in a film series will have as vast of a different tone than X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Logan. Even Rocky to Rocky IV doesn't seem like it can touch that.

I think we all were. The Wolverine was hitting all the right buttons for me up until that point.

Glad to hear some positive impressions on Logan.

I think that's Wolverine covered in set liquid adamantium, which is the closest thing to killing him.

Logan's
"death"
in the comics. They even have all the materials for the flashbacks.

He didn't have his healing factor at the time already.

He got covered in adamantium and suffocated to death when it hardened, which ended up killing him because he didn't have a healing factor at the time.
He was essentially succeeded by X-23 and Old Man Logan.

It's gonna make his Oscars opening number really ironic.
Oof, thanks.

If old men faltering and letting their guarded vulnerability break down in jagged gasps makes your chest hitch up, you're probably gonna be a chest-hitching motherfucker.

Everyone always talks about the giant robot samurai but Viper was pretty terrible as well.
I liked the samurai battle even though Wolvie was completely outmatched. Viper didn't work at all though. but it's comics, good comes with the bad

Say no more.

And they just showed an ad on Colbert showing almost nothing but small scenes of Logan having dinner with regular people and showing the human side of things instead of spectacle. I like that they are selling this as small scale.

That's cool! I have a feeling this movie will be the Wolverine movie I've been wanting to look for a while now. Hope I'm not disappointed.

Viper got a lot of complaints too. The robot climax just got more criticism thrown at it.

You admitted in the beginning of this thread that you have never played the game. How come you know this? Also the trailer screams TLOU. The relationship with the kid and state of the world which seems pretty dark.

If you honestly believe those aspects of western storytelling began with The Last of Us that's a problem of your perspective not having enough older media added to it. Which is okay, because there's a lot of shit out there that I haven't watched/read either. I'm always discovering new shit that I probably should have "discovered" before now.

But Logan isn't a Last of Us riff. Like I said earlier, this film's references are pretty fucking up-front.

Yeah. I mean, there's some fantastical shit in here (it's still an X-Men movie) but it's probably the most grounded of any X-film. Relatively speaking, of course.

Embargo's up tomorrow afternoon.

Pretty sure there'll be a RT thread by like 1:30pm, knowing the superhero community here.

On that note, I just came back from a press screening (yeah, I was weirded out on the fact that they were doing it this early). I'm on embargo though so I'm not gonna make any impressions public just yet.

You can try striking me a PM for a quick as hell impression, but no guarantees that I'll get back to you ASAP.
