Destructoid fucked up.

Uh oh....

Here is the sense. It's actually a courtesy to the outlets. Because of the limitations of logistics. Outlets aren't going to get their Switches at the same time. We saw how Europe got theirs before most of NA did. Also a few Switches will end up shipping slower because of the normal shipping snafus that crop up.

If there was no embargo, then the outlets who happened to be lucky enough to get their Switches first would have a huge advantage. They would get all of the media attention before other people even received theirs in the mail. That is not fair. So instead they build a few days long buffer so they can make sure that everyone got a working Switch before any coverage happens.

The embargo specifically mentions keeping the Switch in it's packaging because Nintendo understands that unboxing videos generate a ton of traffic these days. You might think that's silly, but outlets actual financial livelihoods are attached to things like unboxings and giving certain outlets an unfair advantage is not a desirable outcome.

The embargo is only for a few days. On Feb 23rd every outlet will have a fair chance to cover the Switch for their audience.

Beyond that the embargos on reviews assure that outlets won;t feel rushed to review the hardware and software. Because there is no rush to be first, they can all just set about doing their jobs in a timely manner.

So yeah, the entire thing is completely sensible.

Bingo.

Hopefully they confirm if the Activity Log is coming in the day one update. I don't want it to be gone. T_T. (The parental controls are NOT a AL so don't bring that up.)

Atleast confirm if Zelda has a ingame timer. I'll have to use a timer and manually add it up if not. :/

Also would like confirmation if each region shows how many Shrines, Koroks, and Chests that you missed. Otherwise it will never be 100%ed lol.

In the Horizon thread there is universal applause for the 88 average. For some reason I don't think that will be the case with Zelda because I guess the expectations are a bit higher. Still, I'd be impressed with an 88 and hopefully a lot of others will be too.

Still my prediction is 89-91 which is insane for an open world game these days.

Anything lower than a 90 for a main 3D Zelda will unleash an age of butthurt, shitposting, and the persecution of game reviewers.

Wasn't some statistical analysis done earlier in which for modern scores you must add around 3 points to reflect how scores would have been a few years back? People should realize critics don't play these days.

So... Direct on the 23rd to explain the UI and the other stuff we don't know yet?

FWIW, I have a friend who is a retail rep for Nintendo and he said that he got a Switch last week to bring to retailers to show to customers, but he was expressly forbidden from turning the unit on when showing it. He said something about features they haven't announced officially or people seeing the also-unannounced UI.

I dont expect a direct till after the system launches and only to talk about games coming before E3.

But if the embargo is up on the 23rd, then isn't it reasonable for Nintendo to want to be the ones to dictate the conversation about how it all works?

I'm just trying to be optimistic that Nintendo aren't totally clueless and will get the word out soon.

the UI is so basic there really isnt any point to a direct to show it off thanks to the leak UI videos we know there really isnt anything special they arent showing us. At best we might get a small couple min video uploaded to youtube about the UI and maybe the eshop if we are lucky.

The stuff my friend isn't allowed to show anyone when he brings the system to stores for people to look at.

I don't know why they'd need a Direct for that stuff

the press will have plenty of footage up when the embargo lifts, not to mention we've already seen the UI

The only launch functions are the screenshot functions and the system Album and the eShop.

There's nothing we don't know about the UI that needs an entire Nintendo Direct.

Could they do it? Maybe. Is it remotely necessary at launch? No.

Right.

I thought those thick manuals were for explaining shit like the UI.
I know people don't like reading anymore but a Direct on the UI sounds like fanfiction and odd.

if they do a Direct it better be to announce release dates and give more info for their upcoming games and not just a UI tour

though I guess they've done a Mini Direct before

I wish people would stop saying there is another direct before launch. There are no signs of it nor a need for it. I expect one after launch before E3. We will get everything we need from media outlets previews and reviews.

So yeah, the entire thing is completely sensible. Nintendo is neither being high nor morons. you however, are overreacting and I sincerely hope it's for comic effect.

This should be read and understood by everybody here, especially those complaining about stuff like following embargoes.

I'd say there is a chance of it happening. Nintendo had a direct outlining the WiiU OS and miiverse and so fourth. They are being mighty coy about the UI for Switch, even though it's incredibly straight forward from the leak.

I can see it going both ways. Reggie did say we'd hear about VC before launch.

Maybe I'm just eager for a damn direct.

I think we'll get videos and press releases but no direct. If I'm wrong before launch I'll admit it too, but won't complain. I enjoy the directs.

It'll get above 90, but review scores seem to be trending lower now so who knows?

One thing's for sure though, if Persona 5 doesn't get a 90+ Metacritic, I'm going to cry.

I think we'll see a Direct to showcase and re-promote the system just before the launch. I don't bet much on VC or anything like that because I feel like Nintendo is focusing more on current games and upcoming ones, therefore giving them more highlight.

At any rate, a lot of the games media are currently playing the Switch so more or less we'll get more info about the system with or without the Direct (like we don't know much already given the last "unboxing"). The possible things that only Nintendo can clarify themselves are the after-update stuff like the e-shop, account system and online play.

Yeah,lower. Examples:
Mario Kart 8: 88
Super Mario Maker : 88
Doom:85
Horizon :88
But I thought Zelda and Persona would be ok.

We should have a BotW-specific metacritic prediction thread before the embargo ends. I mean, it's a big enough deal.

It's not really fair to make comparisons of how great games reviewed in the past. It seems like scores nowadays are lower and with Zelda going away from what it was we don't know how some of these reviewers will feel about that. Some of them may not like the openness at all or the degrading weapons.

I don't really see BOTW getting higher than 92 on metacritic. Too many reviewers these days, it's a big change to the formula, additional variables such as voice acting performance and story pacing, etc.

That said, IDGAF about reviews especially for this game.

I think your point about the sheer amount of reviewers is a good one. This is a LoZ entering a review environment that has changed considerably even since its last entry. Could go either way.

95

I agree 100%. I usually go to reviews, hands-on, etc. for games I am unsure about, but not LoZ.

The game that will get the highest reviews this year will be Super Mario Odyssey because Super Mario 3D World was not what everyone wanted and it got a 93 (same time period reviews were getting stricter).

SMO is what most people want being sandbox style Mario game. I wouldn't be surprised if it got 95-96.

Yeah, it's going to be huge, critically. One of the reasons being that no one else in the industry creates platformers on the same scale as 3D Mario titles.

Re the talk of a direct for the UI, remember there's a system update required to connect to the eShop as per the leaked UI video, so most likely the direct will be focused on what the UI, eShop & features will be post the day 1 update. If there's a direct at all that is.

Hahaha. For those fans, BoTW is literally the Switch trojan horse. If it doesn't review well enough to stamp out all the dissent then the war is lost. But dammit if they won't go out swanging
