NeoGAF Drawing-a-Day Thread

bztkW7z.jpg

I'm trying to learn Spanish for my girlfriend, so I decided to draw some of the words. The cat had a weird texture, don't know what happened there.

Edit: I'm going to hold back on some of my designs since I might be contractually binded not to show them yet. But if I get a clear, I share them.

You're almost there! You just need to draw the bones or "fingers" that support the wings.

Then take a day just working on drawing wings! Because that's the beauty of the drawing a day thread - if you're gonna be drawing anyway, might as spend some of those days focusing on one or two areas you consider a weakness.

Thanks for the tips, guys. Guess I'll take a day to work on wings and feet since those are two prominent weaknesses of mine.

Day 7.

Felt like drawing a vampire with pigtails in a turtleneck cause why not.

Clash of Food Cultures

Spilled Milk Podcast fanart based on a subscriber only episode where the hosts debate which is better, Japanese food or French food and get a lawyer involved.

Want to do more interesting compositions...Spent a good few hours on this today, I get really frustrated when I'm out of my depth! Really shows my actual skill level haha.

Missed yesterday's post, so doubling down.

Day 8

His right eye got smudged so I'm not too happy about that.

Day 9

Another vampire. Love it when a picture comes out better than expected!

Have to say I'm enjoying having to draw everyday (for the most part). It's something I look forward to after work and helps keep my mind at peace.

I really dig this sketch. Reminds me of Bayonetta or something from Grasshopper/Suda51.

Tried doing a daily draw this month and failed hard after 3 days due to personal reasons. Gonna try picking up again and finishing off a few days of the month though. I love the idea of daily draws!

My theme was Overwatch characters to start, and managed to do a Mercy, Zarya and Winston. I'll post more dailies in here if I get to it.

Also, kudos to all of you sticking to this, it's tough. Really great stuff I've seen here.

I HATE drawing digitally, especially not in Sai, but I'm getting better. Today's work getting expressions down for my work-in-progress webcomic:

Anyone have any books or videos on getting hair rendered better?

Try putting a layer under your lines and sort of block out how you want the hair to look. IIRC, Sai's default marker tool is pretty good for this since it has a low opacity and that can make it easier to guide the flow of the hair. Then you can go back to your line layer with a better vision of how the hair should look.

Thanks for the links. Lots to read/watch. :)

On line weight, I'm using a weird workflow that emphasises dead lines rather than pen pressure. Makes it easier to get drawing. Hands down the thing I suck at most in digital art, though. It's SO much easier offline.

Today:

Going for neatness isn't the goal for me right now, so a lot of my digital work is very crude atm. It's mostly about drawing, seeing what I'm having trouble with, and then trying to do it better.

These ships are cute and remind me of oldschool shoot 'em ups (or I guess rather, like, the illustrations in an instruction booklet or on the side of the arcade machine)

Yeah, I wasn't even going for that look but they started turning out that way, so I kind of went with it.
I think it's the outlines and multiple colors. Most "serious" spaceships seem to pretty much stick with just gray. And never more than one or two colors.

Day 15

I've noticed that my consistency has gotten much better. Before, some sketches were great and others were ok. But now, I feel like all of my sketches come out great (not to brag) and can create them quickly as well. This thread is both incredibly inspiring and helpful!

It's like practicing anything, you can't help but improve even after two weeks if you do it regularly. Keep it up!

I'm so happy to see so many folks participating.

Definitely nice to see a few more regulars!
