Nintendo Switch Previews are coming in

I didn't say it was necessarily a bad thing, but you can't deny what this launch actually is.

As far as I'm concerned, it's the new Zelda console launch. Like I said, I understand why people want these features, but to me it's all about the games. I'll do the rest on my PC/phone.

It's pretty much what Bloodborne was to PS4 for me. That system sat around for ages before it got enough of a library to bother booting up on a regular basis.

It's how every launch is for almost every console. The few that have bucked the trend have usually been due to large lag times between JPN and NA/EU launches, allowing refinement and library buildup. An example is Dreamcast, which had a lag of almost 1 year between regions.

Anyone who expects to go into a console launch without some bumps hasn't been doing this long, to be honest.

EDIT: The one thing I'll be disappointed about is Switch lacking an activity log. I'll get over it, though.

Get ready for another mind-blowing concept... you can play games and enjoy using the Activity Log!

I love Nintendo and I'm excited about the Switch but this thread is absurd with some of these defenses.

What the hell is there to enjoy about using an activity log? Does looking at your hours played really make you that happy? I'd probably be embarrassed to see how much time I've spent playing games let alone being excited about it lol.

This, like the mini web browser, a web browser, Netflix, VC etc would be insane to not eventually include. It'll all be there eventually.
Why would it be insane to not include features you say no one cares about?

Also, no offense but talesfromyourass isn't exactly a good reason for me to assume we'll get features that aren't currently there.

Some of you are really asking to delay a console by 8 months so they an add a web browser, an activity log, NES games and Netflix.

Think about it again. Eight months delay for NES games and stuff you can do on your smartphone.

Guys.

Well, I'm regretting not going for the pro controller just yet. Hmmm...really should get a pro controller, sd card, and carrying case at some point.

Might push me to play in handheld mode more, which is sounding like the better way to play Zelda from the limited comments anyway.

I think no VC or even stated VC rollout plan is weird. Personally, all I'm looking to play on the device is Zelda atm, and I have other things I'm playing/planning on playing elsewhere, but ultimately I'm really considering finally getting a digital reproduction of my Nintendo catalog. I would like to know if Switch is indeed a good time to do that.

eShop will be there for us though right? It is just not there for pre-launch?

There are settings in the UI for "disable automatic sleep mode when playing media" or something like that.

This confirms 100% that media playing apps will come eventually.

Does the lack of an activity log prevent you from playing games?

No?

Then why does it matter?

Would you rather the Switch come out April 3 with an Activity Log or can you deal with not having it for a few weeks?

Shouldn't be a deal breaker.
You'd have a point if the lack of an activity log was the only thing that seemed under cooked about the systems launch.

I'd rather the Switch come out at the end of the year and launch with a better line up, a VC, and the features they already had in their old systems.

In other news, the Mii maker now has options for a full spectrum of hair (and eye) colours:

This upsets me because I really like the new icons but I also love having more options for Miis.

I'm pretty certain this was meant to originally release this fall, but for a multitude of reasons it's been decided to launch early.

I'm so torn, I love the idea and concept but it seems Nintendo is withholding a lot of info which never works out well, I'm 50/50if I'll pick one up launch week at the moment.

Honestly, anyone who feels ambivalent should just wait and watch until they feel confident.

Me, I've been an early adopter many times and enjoy the ride. I'm all in. Hopefully I can snag one next week, as I stupidly missed out on pre-ordering the system itself.

The only issue is the sync issue and even with that's it's unclear just how big of an issue it is. No one gives a damn about how barebones an OS is. You aren't buying an operating system. This isn't a computer. People need to stop acting as if that's a major factor in people's purchase decisions. It's not and has never been.

I do to a degree depending on what is left out (which we'd know if ninty had been more transparent). It's not a major issue for me and I'm certainly not trying to imply that it is going to fail because of it or anything looney like that.

That aside, I'm probably one of the most fair posters around in regards to Nintendo, so don't think I'm trying to dogpile it. Notice that I'm not threatening to cancel my preorder or anything like that lol. This joycon thing is worrisome though.

Do you act this way about everything you don't enjoy? People are different, I'm tired of explaining myself to you guys.

Why the fuck do you think they came up with the Activity Log in the first place?

Why the hell does it matter if we have tons of other ways to watch netflix or youtube already?

This is a new device, and if it's not as crippled as people seem to think it is, then Netflix and other streaming apps should be available and work perfectly.

It's got a bigger screen than my phone and it has a kickstand. You're telling me that you have other devices better suited to watches videos? That you are willing to carry along as well?

Why can't the game go into a suspended state while quickly switching to a browser to look something up instead of having to pull out my phone or another device?

These things are basic.

No virtual console is an absolute joke. Don't give me any nonsense about how other consoles didn't launch with it. It's not some new technology that they need to figure out. It's emulation. It's a bunch of nerds can get emulators for pretty much every old school console to work on the NES classic, Nintendo should be able to get virtual console implemented properly for their new console at launch.

"Why does my video game console only play video games"

I'm more interested in the question "how does person claim to be journalist and get a Switch"

I've owned a 3DS since March 2011. Have never used the activity log once. Same on the Wii U.

Who

Cares

Jax, your fanboy is showing. The Last digital item to only do one thing was over a decade ago. Be it the PS3, Wii, iPhone, or even a damn TV they all have multi usages.

3DS and Wii U both had their activity log features at launch. Expecting the same for Switch is not unrealistic.

I'm bummed but it's not a deal breaker for me. If I had to guess, it'll probably be added in the fall when the online service goes live or whatever — that'll be like the second launch.

Fuck off with this no one should expect VC or a simple activity log at launch. I'm sick of this attitude among the front line defenders that all a system should do is play games at launch and nothing more.

Exactly this, Nintendo's previous few releases have been really lacking in features that have been present in their competitors alongside since their respective launches, they've had enough attempts to know that they shouldn't be doing this.

You would think a lot of people would have already exhausted their defenses for Nintendo after doing it for the entirety of the Wii-U's run.

Guys.
I haven't seen anyone asking for it to be delayed, just pointing out its a beta launch and for a lot of people that won't fly and the real launch will be when basic apps and more than one game is out.

eShop comes in with the day one patch, and purchases are directly available (remember/know that several digital indies are available at launch, like Shovel Knight and FAST RMX).

Is the Anti Switch Gaf in action, dont waste your time.

I mean, the easy answer is to do what they've always done. Trickle out games on VC at an irritating rate. Don't put those specific games out yet. Put some of the classic Marios and whatever else out to make it feel more well rounded. I'm not saying they can do this now, like you suggest, I'm saying they didn't have their ducks in a row to do this now. It's literally throwing away money top get it out in front of fall competition. It feels rushed.

That said, I'm getting it day one cuz Zelda looks phenominal.

And I'm very positive they'll do just that when the time is 'right'.

We'll just disagree on it being deliberate or not; I think it's an annoying but ultimately smart move not to launch with VC.

I agree Nintendo should have Youtube and Netflix sooner than later. But I think you have an odd conceptualization of the average consumer if you think they are evaluating their next game console purchase based on whether it runs streaming video apps out of the box. There are much cheaper ways to accomplish that.

They are evaluating an entertainment device as a whole. Which is why they need to get those ASAP.

Because they had to get the system out. And if you really think there won't be VC and Netflix you're kidding yourself. If/when they add an activity log, wouldn't be surprised if it synced with the parental control data too so you won't have a single game missing.

Just false outrage is all this is. The Switch is launching with a bang and needs to have a running start. I prefer a March 3 launch, with a stable OS over an all apps day one/late April situation.

Sorry for slightly off-topic but I'm asking in here because there isn't a non-spoiler thread out there right now.

To anyone in the Zelda leaked asset thread, what's the overall consensus? Has enough leaked to provide any indications of the game's quality? Yay or nay?

Not really. PS4 and Xbone all launched with multiple mainstream AAA titles and essential video apps.

Why does it bother you if the Switch launch is an Early Access/Beta launch?

They launched with updated versions of last gen games (call of duty and battlefield) and very sparse exclusive games like Killzone Shadowfall and Ryse.

Probably best not to fool ourselves into thinking they had great launch lineups.

That would work if he had a written article to further explain the problem. Now we are just looking at a journalist saying the Switch is undercooked because it is missing two features. He should do a write up to tell us the extend of his issues with the system, not just a tweet.

It's basically missing all features. It has no features, except Zelda. That's the list of features at launch.

There's almost nothing in the leaked asset thread, besides some outfits.

Jason and Emily are big fans of Nintendo, but they are also honest. I'm sure the core fans aren't bothered by any of this news. but Ninty needs to sell this thing to people outside of that bubble too, doesn't seem like a good start.

I understand your point but I honestly think Nintendo didn't plan to sell this to people outside the bubble until the fall anyway.

I just do hope Nintendo gets Netflix and a web browser on this thing before the fall. I know I can netflix on a thousand devices but when I go home to visit my parents (who have no internet) I use my phone as a hotspot and lug my laptop with me for netflix/internet browsing. Would be so much easier to just bring the switch and phone instead.

Oh please. I have mine pre-ordered. I'm not going to ignore things I don't like about it.
Yeah, I'm excited to get a Switch at launch and I'm certainly not outraged about features missing. What I'm outraged about is not being able to discuss any amount of displeasure in this thread without being attacked for caring about features that other people don't care about. It's fucking ridiculous but I guess I should expect it by now from GAF.

Oh no! And that's preview embargo I'm guessing?

When I played it was pretty bad, and this is from someone who can't tell 30 from 60 fps and thinks Bloodborne runs fine...
I'd like to understand why we see that and at the same time other previews where the guys tell us there's no problem with FPS among other good things.

Who's lying ?

And it's the same for a few other stuff.

Nope! I forget where but your router's settings should have an option for "channel" regardless of the band. Depending on where you live you might want to change at least the 2.4Ghz to a channel that's less used. There are guides on doing so online.

I had to do that when my wife and I lived in the city for a bit.

Thanks I'll look into this

Also, catching up on a bunch of posts, to those complaining about the 720p screen, trust me, the screen looks fantastic. Besides the weight of the console, it's the one thing I'm constantly impressed with how good it looks.
