Nintendo Switch Previews are coming in

Not sure why anyone would expect anything better. No device does well under the sun. None of their past handhelds, not mobile phones/tablets, nothing. Unless it's got an e-ink display, which was never an option.

That's just part of usual testing for mobile devices. For what it's worth, it's bright enough under the sun that you still have enough visibility. Who's gonna play a console while being cooked under the sun anyway? lol

All I really care about is VC and the sync issues that are coming up, but it's not something that effects my decision regarding purchasing unless the issues continue and aren't addressed.

I love Nintendo, but some of you are going absolutely insane with the defense force here. It's one thing to correct mis-information, but it's another to argue about whether or not the Switch is worth buying on day one.

Discussion is one thing, arguing is another. If you want Switch on day one, then don't berate someone who wants to hold off. Likewise, if you don't want it on day one don't be a dick to people that do.

Like... let's just talk about games and discuss things instead of fighting.

I was never going to change my mind when it comes to getting the Switch, but I'm super happy to see that the hardware seems to deliver. Software can and will change but messing up the tech that the software will run on is how you get another Wii-U.

Bingo!

In other news, the Mii maker now has options for a full spectrum of hair (and eye) colours:

Jason and Emily are big fans of Nintendo, but they are also honest. I'm sure the core fans aren't bothered by any of this news. but Ninty needs to sell this thing to people outside of that bubble too, doesn't seem like a good start.

Hardcore Nintendo fan here. I'm extremely worried about it. I also have faith that they'll get that all in and working. Whether or not that's miguided faith on my part remains to be seen.

I want to play Zelda as much as anyone, but they should have launched in the fall.

Launched in the fall with Zelda, Mario, virtual console, browser, streaming apps, achievements, and whatever other things that would make this extremely basic device much more compelling in 2017.

The world has changed and how we interact with our portable devices has changed. Saying that what is essentially a tablet and being sold as a portable device should do nothing but play games is insanity.

I really hope Nintendo reacts quickly, but my expectations thus far aren't high considering they can't launch with a simple virtual console.

For those with sync issues...

From what I'm hearing this is mostly a problem while docked. Does is also happen while in table top mode?

If not, try swapping the HDMI cable.

I had an issue with my Wii U at launch that sounded VERY similar.

I changed the HDMI cable and have never had the problem since.

So instead of launching a great console with lots of features then adding more over time, they're launching a barebones device then adding the basics over time. Wow, this sounds like a great deal for consumers.

Everything about the Switch just screams wait for 2019. I had one preordered to rent Zelda then sell off after during the launch shortage period, but even that didn't seem worth the effort for one game with so much else out.

Virtual console is the only gimme I can really give you. Why in the world would a consumer want to use the web browser on the Switch or Netflix when most people have tons of other devices that can do that already? You can see why it wouldn't be a priority for Nintendo.

Anecdotal but I have at least 10 devices that can run Netflix better and faster than the Switch will eventually be able to do.

I'm sorry but this is bullshit. No one should expect an activity log day one? Really?

I don't expect or care about one period.

"No Miiverse" is the strangest complaint I thought anyone would have.

"No Miiverse" is the strangest complaint that I myself have haha. Seems like such a small thing but I think I'm gonna miss it. But I'm confident that they can do something cool with their social media integration.

Instagram would be a big win, but I think they are one of the harder ones to integrate with. OMG could you imagine boomeranging gameplay? That would be SICK.

Man after what hapenned to the wii u, this kind of half ass launch is the last thing nintendo can afford. Wtf is happening.

Theyre gonna royally mess this up to please investors if they don't get lucky with the launch.
Something tells me people no longer have the kind patience to deal with a soft launch, especially for Nintendo

But when Sony announced the PS4, the general census was that it was a true gaming machine. Xbox One was too focused on TV and NFL Network integration, and not enough about games.

Have the tides changed in 4 years?
That's a dishonest comparison, really. Microsoft crippled their console in order to launch with a Kinect pack in and their first reveal focused on stuff like a 200m dollar NFL deal, but the PS4 still released with a web browser, video apps, bluray playback, etc, and it was the best bang for the buck as a gaming console (more powerful and cheaper).

Activity log and Virtual console are features no one should expect/care about day one. Just because it doesn't have that stuff yet doesn't make it a half baked console.

Apps will be added soon enough. (Probably before E3) but it's a non-issue. Buy a console to play video games primarily, go buy a shitty tablet if you love Netflix so much. (Or better yet, go watch Netflix in your 3DS, since you love Netflix on game consoles so much)

Dude is straight up clickbaiting his tweets so people go read his review.

I care about those things day one. My wife cares about those things. Friends of mine don't understand why they're not there day one.

It's not clickbaiting. Regular people have the same concerns.

You're being too defensive.

See the thing is, you have no idea. Technically, neither do I, but it makes more sense to to me to say it's rushed than to say they are deliberately hamstringing the thing out the gate. It's already a pretty bad lineup outside of a few games. Either way it looks bad. Your way...it looks stupid/sinister.

That's silly. Frontloading means a lot of stuff gets buried. I'm talking about VC here. They want to put the emphasis on the publishers who have made the effort to launch with Switch. VC at launch means people spend less money on those other games.

The browser/app thing is likely a security issue; wanting to see how the OS holds up in real life before saddling it with a big security/piracy risk like adding a browser.

That's all just common sense, nothing sinister about it.

Alright buddy, see you in 2019.

Remember when everyone thought the Switch would be released Holiday of last year? Can't imagine what it would look like if it did.

The idea that this is a soft-launch of the Switch and the "real" launch is Holiday 2017 is seeming more and more likely.

Surprised at all the complaints about the console being barebones. I thought people missed the times when you can just turn on your console and play a game? Switch is doing exactly that as best it can and the other stuff will come later. I'm glad there's not streetpass, miiverse or video apps. My phone is a better tool for that, and I can appreciate the switches plug and play mentality.

The joy-con issue is the most concerning thing for me at this point, but it doesn't seem to be widespread

Yeah I hate when I fire up my Xbox One but I'm forced to watch an episode of The Ranch on Netflix before I can play a game.

Sounds like a typical console launch. Its nice seeing the small info surrounding the UI all say its quick, simplistic, and does 1 thing well, launch games quickly. I do wish they had the day 1 patch available this week so we could see how adding friends and some online features work, but its not a big issue as I don't see many launch games besides Bomberman R using them.

Honestly, much like previous console launches you are only buying this thing if you're a hardcore Nintendo or video game/technology fanatic (or really want to play Zelda and do not own a Wii U). The concerns about the amount of software available at launch has hurt every platform. The PS4 and Xbox One were also weak and lacked a potential console seller like Zelda, so only time will tell if the software library fills up sooner rather then later.

People definitely care about these things on a device that looks to all the world and functions otherwise like a tablet.

I would hope nobody is buying the Switch to replace their iPad. It hasn't been sold on the basis of having thousands of apps or being a general computing device. I don't know how anyone would get that impression besides making a blind purchase based on assumptions, which is bad for any product let alone $300 technology purchases.

I was told that exact thing straight from a rep's mouth.

Frontloading? How many games is it launching with again? They aren't even all new games. If they plan on selling a lot of Switches, they have some bad press ahead of them if they can't even let fans tap into nostalgia on VC with the paltry selection on display,. That's a weak argument, bro. I'm sorry.

For sure, I get why they do it. But I have seen people express disappointment with it's poor performance in direct sunlight. It's just kind of baffling how they could expect anything more. It's also funny how standard a practice it is among tech reviews when it's always the same outcome; varying degrees of shitty.

I've always been an early adopter ever since I could afford to buy consoles ps4, ds, Wii U, vita, and 3DS were like this too. Soft launch is not a foreign thing in the console space. I've learned to deal with but I understand how others could be disappointed.

Disclaimer: n64, gba, nor Wii was bought by me but they were similar. Ps1, 2, 3 were all bought after launch.

I don't know, I feel a hardcore Nintendo fan would be more than thrilled they are getting a brand new Zelda game than if they can watch Hulu on it at launch.

People are over reacting. Wow. First console launch?

Only thing i even remotely care about on that list is virtual console.

It feels really sparse for something that is releasing in 2017. I mean, yeah, I can drop 300 dollars to play Zelda and 1-2-switch, but it just doesn't seem worth it until the system itself has more going on for it. Top this off with the left Joycon desync talk, and I'll gladly wait until the holidays to consider picking one up.

I've owned a 3DS since March 2011. Have never used the activity log once. Same on the Wii U.

Who

Cares
You may want to sit down for this... not everyone in the world is you. Crazy concept, I know.

I check the Activity Log almost every time I play a game on 3DS.

100% agree. People should recognize that others have different tastes, interests and expectations from this thing. They can state theirs don't align, but calling others clickbaity, ignorant or having some malicious agenda to undermine/push some particular interest achieves nothing and is actually super petty. I'm very sure no one wants this thing to fail. Having more games and more quality consoles is good for everyone. Heck, even Shuhei Yoshida wants this thing to be good.

Try playing an intensive game on your phone. Go on, let me know how that goes.

The unfortunate reality is that a higher resolution screen would kill the battery. Enjoy 45 minutes of Zelda before you have to hug a wall.

not as much as you would think, atleast not if they put a 1080p screen anyway, nobody is asking for a 4k screen. For any 5.5+" size screen, 1080p should be the lowest you go to. Even if only the menu are rendered in that res. In the future if games get way too demanding, and dev start running games in sub 720p res, they can runs games at 960x544 and it would scale nicely to a 1080p screen. I am quite impressed with how some vita native res game look on a 1080p tv with 1080i output.

I'm sorry what?
Yes they give a shit about it. Netflix/Youtube are huge in the portable business and the Switch is in that business.

There is a fine line between what us fans want from a launch (personally i'm 100% ok with not having any features, I really just want Zelda) and what the average consumer expects. No web browser is the one that would probably sting the most.

I agree Nintendo should have Youtube and Netflix sooner than later. But I think you have an odd conceptualization of the average consumer if you think they are evaluating their next game console purchase based on whether it runs streaming video apps out of the box. There are much cheaper ways to accomplish that.

I'm more of a softcore Nintendo fan and I'm pretty excited about Switch in March. Zelda, Splatoon 2, a week away for work where I get to play Zelda in my hotel, etc.

I don't think it's misguided faith to believe they will add the basic features people are looking for.
